Jalandhar: There does not appear to be any smooth implementation of two Akal Takht directives to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) pertaining to its working. While Akal Takht jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh on Sunday gave 20 days to SAD to accept former chief Sukhbir Singh Badal ’s resignation and, by doing so, increased it from the initial three days, the seven-member committee formed for enrolment in SAD has not started functioning or even coordinating within. The biggest hiccup is an argument being given by a section of SAD leadership: that their taking decisions on Akal Takht’s directives could lead to legal complications and become a challenge to the party’s registration with the Election Commission of India. SAD Sudhar Lehar convener Gurpartap Singh Wadala, a member of the seven-member committee, said there had been no initial coordination within the committee. “We can work only if a process of coordination is initiated within the committee by the SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami, who heads it,” he said. Dhami told TOI he had conveyed to the Akal Takht jathedar that SAD acting on its directives could be seen as a case of a religious authority directing a political party. “I called upon the jathedar on Friday and discussed this. I have requested jathedar sahib to take advice from legal luminaries, so that the Akali Dal remains on a sound footing. We can start working after that,” Dhami said. Sources in SAD said this argument, of risk to SAD’s registration as a political party, was being strongly given in the top circles of the party, even as there was the ostensible reason that the party’s working president, Balwinder Singh Bhunder, and members of the working committee were also performing ‘tankhah’. SAD leaders had given this argument earlier when Akal Takht jathedar and four other high priests ordered Virsa Singh Valtoha’s expulsion from SAD for 10 years. As a way out, SAD accepted Valtoha’s resignation without referring to the Akal Takht directive. Certain other directives by Akal Takht on Dec 2 are set to impact Sukhbir’s political career, including the taking back of the ‘Path Ratan Fakhr-E-Qaum’ title from his father, late Parkash Singh Badal, posthumously, and the observation “this leadership has lost the moral right to lead the Akali Dal”. However, these two directives – pertaining to his resignation and membership drive – could have a bearing on his and his aides’ careers. The pronouncement from Akal Takht laid emphasis that the membership drive should be genuine and Aadhaar cards, etc., should be used to eliminate any bogus enrolment. Girl Scouts to take over Sunrise Theater Dec. 13Peter Dutton will go to the election as the presumptive prime minister unless there is a dramatic disruption to the long, steady trend that is taking him within sight of victory. The opposition leader faces big obstacles in forming government – not least driving the “teal” independents out of parliament – but has gained ground at a rate that should alarm the Labor loyalists who thought he could never succeed. But he is also defying gravity, in a sense, because he is now ahead in the opinion polls at a time of deep unrest over the cost of living when he has no significant public plan to fix the problem. Nobody can be sure if Dutton will return to earth with a thud after he reveals the cost of his stated policy to build seven nuclear power stations over the coming decades. And nobody knows if voters will thank Dutton at the election for advocating a “back-to-basics” approach to federal spending that could cut services many voters take for granted. Dutton is certainly confident. Loading “There is zero prospect now of a majority Albanese government after the next election,” he said on Sunday. He uses the prospect of a minority Labor government to warn voters about the power of the Greens in a hung parliament. At the same time, he benefits from the common assumption that he will not be running the country next year. He limits the media appearances that expose him to hard questions. He delivers sharp attack lines without having to worry about being put on the defensive.

Unlike quarterly or annual payouts, receiving every month mimics the rhythm of most household expenses, making it easier to budget and plan. Whether you’re retired and relying on investment income for day-to-day expenses or building wealth for future goals, monthly dividends add a layer of predictability and financial stability. These can even act as a safety net, helping investors stay calm during market volatility because the cash flow continues regardless of stock price fluctuations. Pizza Pizza ( ) exemplifies the value of monthly dividend stocks with its impressive 6.97% forward annual dividend yield. This means shareholders receive approximately $0.0775 per share every month. This is a significant benefit, especially for income-focused investors. The dividend stock has consistently prioritized returning value to shareholders. And its monthly dividends reflect this commitment. For Canadians aiming to build or maintain a reliable passive-income stream, PZA’s payout frequency is a key advantage. And it continues to look solid! In its recent third-quarter 2024 earnings report, Pizza Pizza faced some headwinds, including a 5.3% decline in same-store sales and a 4.6% drop in Royalty Pool System Sales. This totalled $155.8 million. Despite these challenges, the dividend stock demonstrated resilience by maintaining its dividend payouts. Dividends declared for the quarter amounted to $5.7 million, or $0.2325 per share, reflecting a payout ratio of 109%. While a high payout ratio like this can raise concerns about sustainability, PZA has shown an ability to manage its finances effectively over the long term. Historically, Pizza Pizza has weathered economic ups and downs while delivering consistent returns to its shareholders. The dividend stock has positioned itself as a stable player in Canada’s quick-service restaurant industry, leveraging its strong brand recognition and innovative marketing strategies to retain and grow its customer base. This historical performance makes PZA a reliable choice for investors who value steady income alongside growth potential. Looking ahead Looking to the future, PZA has laid out promising initiatives to drive growth and maintain its market position. The dividend stock expanded its restaurant network significantly in 2024, opening 33 new locations, a net increase of 16. These include traditional and non-traditional formats, showing adaptability to changing consumer preferences. On the product side, PZA has launched new offerings like the and the “All for One” special. These have been well-received by customers, adding to its competitive edge. Pizza Pizza has also leveraged its strong digital footprint and marketing campaigns to boost pickup orders, which are becoming increasingly popular. For example, initiatives like the “Pickup Artists” campaign and partnerships with brands like Tabasco have helped the company stay relevant and appeal to a broad customer base. By focusing on value and convenience, PZA continues to stand out in a crowded quick-service restaurant landscape. From a financial standpoint, PZA’s metrics highlight its strengths. As of its most recent quarter, the company reported a profit margin of 77.81% and a return on equity of 10.49%. While its revenue growth faced some pressure, with a year-over-year decline of 4.4%, its focus on strategic expansion and customer engagement suggests a pathway for recovery. The dividend stock has also demonstrated prudent financial management, with operating cash flow at $31.43 million over the trailing 12 months, providing flexibility for future initiatives. Foolish takeaway For Canadian investors seeking reliable monthly income, PZA offers a compelling case. The combination of a high dividend yield, consistent payouts, and a track record of resilience makes it a standout option. Monthly dividends not only enhance cash flow but also provide peace of mind, knowing that income will continue regardless of broader market conditions. This is especially important for those relying on dividends to supplement their living expenses or reinvest for compounded growth. Monthly dividends are a valuable asset for Canadian investors, blending consistency and predictability into any portfolio. Pizza Pizza, with its substantial yield and proactive strategies, is an excellent example of how dividend stocks can provide both income and growth potential. Its ability to navigate challenges while rewarding shareholders makes it a prime choice for anyone seeking to build a stable, income-focused investment strategy.
Grog dopeys So, the thrashing meted out by Ireland to the Flying Fijians last weekend was the referee’s fault! Again. Any wins by the Flying Fijians are never the referee’s fault. How much of a Third World mentality and pathetic are the grog dopeys of Fiji? When will Fijians stop blaming everyone else? I guess wrecking the RFNS Puamau was also the referee’s fault and the fact that the people and government in the country are useless is also the referee’s fault. JAN NISSAR, Sydney, Australia. FNPF contributions Can the Government please reconsider the re-entry of people that had no options but to withdraw totally. On the first occasion I withdrew to help my parents pay for my wedding. On the second occasion I had to withdraw for my mother’s medical expenses. For the past 16 years I have been working but despite making several requests I have been told I cannot rejoin. My reasons were genuine. Please can I rejoin for the rest of my working life which could be anything between 6-10years? TAI SMITH, Nasinu Secondary School Rd, Kinoya, Nasinu Family reunions It has always been my policy to refrain from engaging in debate with overseas correspondents, like me, who are not resident in Fiji. Fiji Times readers, I feel are more interested in domestic affairs instead of slanging matches between offshore letter writers. Yesterday’s letter (FT 25/11) from Jan Nissar though, screams for a response. He asks: “Why was there such great pomp, ceremony and celebration? Is there something wrong with living in Fiji?”, when writing of the departure of PALM workers family members. All of this above a tag line of J.N. Sydney, Australia! After years of separation while striving to increase their family life style, these families now look forward to a better future. Yes Jan, they have won the lottery. They are coming to join you. Who did you vote for? TERRY HULME, Australia Milky water, stench Who is responsible for the enforcement of regulations for the very milky water and the unbearable stench present in the Yarawa Rd creek in the Raiwasa area in Suva? The Suva City Council, Ministry of Environment, and the Water Authority of Fiji have been approached and responded but the problem is still there. Who should we approach now? ASISH VINAY PRASAD, Park Rd, Raiwasa, Suva Transport payment The truck/carrier operators on Ovalau are infuriated regarding the much delayed RSL Education Transport Payment. Such an issue was not experienced during the term of the previous government. If there was a delay, it would take only a few days for the MOE to effect payments, unlike now. Payments are long outstanding, not for weeks but months and numerous calls to those responsible at MOE have proven futile. One wonders, were the payment funds diverted to cater for the 50-plus COP29 group expenses or to cater for Government’s weekly globetrotting or for their soqo and kalavata? A service has been provided and payment is long overdue. What’s happening? Who’s responsible for such a “botched up mess?” ANTHONY SAHAI, Levuka, Ovalau RFNS Timo I hope our Fiji Navy sailors don’t have the misconception that the new RFNS Timo is a landing craft and try crossing over a reef. Sobo! WISE MUAVONO, Balawa, Lautoka FNPF pensions Although I am grateful that Parmesh Chand has publicly acknowledged that what was done to us FNPF pensioners in 2012 was wrong while under his chairmanship of the FNPF Board, I am very disappointed that he took all this time to come out and acknowledge this. Shame on you Mr Chand. ROBERT MANOA, Nasinu 16 Days of Activism! As I flipped through the World Health Organization’s page, my attention was drawn to the wealth of information presented on the global 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women, which is a key international moment to call for an end to violence against women and girls. It runs from 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until 10th December (Human Rights Day). WHO shared that violence against women happens in every country and culture, causing harm to millions of women and girls. WHO added that around the world today, prolonged and intense conflicts have resulted in a continuous rise in of all forms of gender-based violence. I salute WHO for playing an active role in strengthening health systems and for calling all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect women and girls from gender-based violence and ensure access to essential health services. Activists marched in Labasa town on Monday during the launch of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. They were in high spirits, making every effort to end violence against girls and women. Our ‘iron-lady’ Shamima Ali is spearheading this campaign, and alongside her, women and girls need our support! RAJNESH ISHWAR LINGAM, Nadawa, Nasinu. Drunkards in town West Police SP Lakobo Vaisewa’s stern warning of arresting disorderly drunkards has had negligible effect as groups of unruly people continue to consume alcoholic beverages in plain view of the public. Police patrols are rare whenever there is a drinking assembly within the city boundaries, despite the Lautoka Police Station located just metres away from all the drinking hotspots. Just last week, while on my usual early morning walk, I observed a lone police officer armed with a police baton nonchalantly approaching a drinking party consisting of rowdy teens at the Pacific Energy Service Station premises (a very common drinking base) situated across the Vomo St junction. Assuming that the lawman would dutifully confront and detain these hooligans for public drinking and disturbing the peace, I was shocked to see this officer informally conversing with these drunkards and shaking hands with them. After the pleasantries were exchanged followed by a kaila, the police officer casually strolled away, leaving the drunks to continue their alcohol binge. I wonder if the situation would have been any different if the guilty party belonged to a different ethnicity, since the two-tier law and justice system is quite dominant in our communities. Law enforcement officers are generally expected to maintain the law, especially in cases of public disturbances or recurring issues like public drinking. When officers appear to be lenient or indifferent to such behaviour, it destabilises the rule of law and often leads to a loss of confidence in the police force. With such lack of commitment to enforcing the law, no wonder the Men in Blue continually gets a bad rapport. NISHANT SINGH,Lautoka Suffering in Baku I believe that the way the Assistant Minister for Women has described the suffering of the Fiji delegation to COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan one would have thought they travelled there on the back of camels in a caravan through an unforgiving desert in the year 1524 (not 2024) without food, water and medicines to reach Baku. It appears they are the only delegation who have stayed away from their families, missed meals and the usual comforts of life at home, suffered from cold and wet, flu and blisters. We all know that people living in Fiji never miss a meal. No other delegates have suffered these things. I have always known that Fijians are resilient and hardworking people who seem to have been allocated tents in Baku while all the other delegates from the developed world travelled by modern jetliners and are staying in luxury hotels and have a lot of money and help. I do not know about anyone else, but I feel for the suffering of the Fiji delegation and the sacrifices they are making for us, for a better Fiji and a better world! I am genuinely concerned about their treacherous camel ride back to Fiji. Are they strong enough to make it back safely? We all should appreciate the hard work they are doing and not be sceptical or critical. I do not for a second believe that the Assistant Minister is being a drama queen. JAN NISSAR, Sydney, Australia The ban IF the Tui Namosi has decided to ban land owners or the people of Namosi caught for their involvement in drugs, then perhaps it will be even-handed for him to also banish thieves, sex perpetrators, domestic abuses etc., from the province. Anyway, I wonder if Ratu Matanitobua was literally better advised or has sought guidance from a legal counsel before giving out his command? Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, I hope you have not looked away from the issue! AREKI DAWAI, Suva. GCC use by date Like Nishant Singh of Lautoka (F/T Nov22) and other writers to this column the GCC has already expired their “use by date” and should be abolished. Former prime minister Bainimarama did the right thing by banishing them under that famous mango tree. They should have been left alone to continue to enjoy themselves under the tree. What good has the GCC ever done for Fiji? ROBERT MANOA, Nasinu Our schoolies Our local schoolies where do they go? Not to a hotel on an island overseas, but usually to an island home, across our seas. EDWARD BLAKELOCK, Admiral Circle, Pacific Harbour Social media ban It’s the parents who should be banned from using social media, not the children. Children copy what their parents do. If the parents stop wasting family time on social media then so will their children. AREN NUNNINK, Hooper St, Savusavu Failure! A failure on every front: Pacific climate advocates decry COP 29 outcomes (RNZ/ FT 26/11/24). The biggest Pacific Island country Papua New Guinea anticipated well and decided not to send any delegation to COP29 saying it’s a waste of time. Fiji sent a bloated delegation of 56 to what has turned out to be “A failure on every front”. But the people of Fiji remain truly blessed with such profound political leadership. RAJEND NAIDU, Sydney, Australia Optimistic The Coalition Government in New Zealand are optimistic after completing the first year. Can the same be said of our Government? DAN URAI, Lautoka Drugs and coconuts The Fiji Times news on drug in coconuts (FT25/11) will affect the sale to some extent. Travellers stop to quench their thirst by drinking this safe natural drink. We are well blessed in our tropical climate. Such publications may affect Fiji tourism. As I stopped for a green coconut drink the vendor said: “This natural drink is good for health.” TAHIR ALI, Hamilton, New Zealand Pool saga THAT swimming pool, is it still in the pipeline? Oh, I see time to review the pipeline. Mmm! NAVNEET RAM (TD), LautokaPresident Joe Biden said that Syria and the broader Middle East faced a “historic opportunity” for peace and the establishment of a new Syrian state with the fall of Bashar Al- Assad ’s government on Sunday. The US president spoke from the White House and called the moment a positive development while warning that it was important to ensure that an “independent” Syrian government that “served all Syrians”. “At long last, the Assad regime has fallen,” said Biden on Sunday. “It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country.” This is a breaking news story. More to follow...... ... ...A Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has expressed satisfaction with the speedy transformation of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) which is fast restoring the institution’s glory as a centre of excellence. Mbah spoke at the 20th Convocation Ceremony of ESUT at Agbani where he was also conferred with an Honourary Doctorate in Business Administration and Corporate Governance at the weekend. The governor announced his administration’s plan to build a Centre for Experiential Learning in ESUT to boost innovation as well as a N50m grant to Prof Cyprian Mgbachi, who stunned the world with the invention of a cooking stove cell phone battery charger, to perfect his technology, while also promising support to other innovators he identified in the university. This was even as the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, announced the graduation of 8,437 students of the institution with First, Post-graduate, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees, noting that nine students made 1st Class. He also said 97 per cent of ESUT programmes had been accredited through the huge investments of Mbah’s Administration in the education sector. In the words of Governor Mbah, “Indeed, I saw technology deployed in the cause of service as I toured an exhibition pavilion showcasing a diverse range of products from biotechnology to pharmacology. “Universities are meant to spur technological advancement. It is in line with this philosophy that I announced a new policy requiring all state-owned tertiary institutions in Enugu State to henceforth deliver Experiential Learning to our students. “This change will reflect in planning, budget, curriculum reform, assessment and promotions, as well as research. “We are also committing substantial funds for research purposes next year. These would be made available to state-owned tertiary institutions. “We have committed over N1.6 billion to carry out structural expansion at ESUT to compensate for the space constraints at Park Lane. “We have equally provided funds worth hundreds of millions to this institution for various programmes, including the letting up a multi-purpose laboratory at the College of Medicine, water reticulation at the College of Medicine, rehabilitation of Anatomy building at the College of Medicine, procurement of equipment for re-accreditation of Nursing Sciences, Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Sciences and procurement of equipment for resource verification of Public Health, Radiography, Human Nutrition and Dietetics as well as Biomedical Engineering in addition to other major interventions to transform the institution. “We would be setting up a Centre for Experiential Learning here. It would be an experiential hub where professors will be wholly immersed in Experiential Learning, which would be passed on to their students,” Mbah said. He urged the graduates to continually pursue excellence, keep pace with technology, and never severe links with the university. “It is expected that ESUT will continually serve as a conveyor belt for the manpower necessary for the transformation envisaged in our society, from health to engineering, ICT, agriculture, etc.,” he concluded. Meanwhile, according to the Vice Chancellor, 6,940 bagged First Degree certificates, 335 Post-Graduate Diplomas, 798 Master’s Degree certificates, while 364 received Ph.D Degrees. Governor Mbah, who is the founder of Pinnacle Oil and Gas, the foremost company in Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas subsector, bagged an Honorary Doctoral Award in Business Administration and Corporate Governance, while Mr Bernd Bergmair, an Austrian and a global investor with proven credential of integrity also received an Honourary Doctoral Award in Business Administration. “This marks the first time a foreigner is receiving ESUT’s honorary doctorate degree. According to Prof Okolie, Osita Tracy Ezinne of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences emerged the overall best graduating student with 4.88 CGPA, while Chukwudebe Pearl Ewere of Faculty of Biological Sciences and Odoeme Ogechi Eunice of Faculty of Environmental Sciences emerged as the second and third overall best graduating students, respectively. Prof. Okolie explained that the university’s programmes were now oversubscribed, given the accreditation of virtually all the programmes of the university by the National Universities Commission, improved study environment and huge investment in resources through the support of the Mbah Administration, in addition to timely completion of programmes. “I am pleased to inform you that 97 per cent of all programmes in ESUT have full NUC Accreditation. The allotted quota for most of the professional courses have been quadrupled and additional faculties mounted,” he said. The highlight of the convocation also included the additional support in the sum of N52m for Prof Mgbachi from Mr Bergmair, making it N102m total sum received by the inventor.

Online child exploitation spiked in B.C. in recent years. Police worry it's here to stayThe shelves and prices at your local grocery store could look a little different soon. The Colorado River, which provides water for about 15% of our country’s agriculture, is shrinking, and the current agreement that divvies up the water usage ends in 2026. The Imperial Valley in Southern California relies 100% on the Colorado River for its water. This valley receives less than three inches of rain a year, yet still produces about two-thirds of the country’s winter produce. Farmers in the valley say the shrinking water levels and competing interests over river usage will badly impact the nation’s food supply. “A lot of people say that the Colorado River and the diminishing water supply is an issue that affects 40 million people, because that’s who rely on it. I think that number is too low. I think 100 million people rely on the water from the Colorado,” said fourth-generation farmer Andrew Leimgruber. “When you’re in between November and March, a large majority of your lettuce, broccoli, carrots, all of your winter greens are coming from either the Imperial Valley or just across the Colorado River from us, Yuma, Arizona,” said Leimgruber. The Colorado River is split between seven states and Mexico. Farmers in the Imperial Valley are the biggest users of the river’s water. If the valley cannot produce enough crops, it can lead to long-term problems. “So, the big issue for us in California is our rising labor cost, but then also the ability to withstand pest pressure and things like that. One issue with lack of water is the lack of diversity in crops. Having that diversity enables us to keep pests under control,” said Benson Farms’ manager, Stephen Benson. Because of the low water levels, some farmers in the valley are paid to not grow certain crops or to use less water. That, however, is not always enough. “I can say it’s not covering our costs all the time. For instance, if I’m going to install drip irrigation, I need to have $1,000 an acre. I don’t get anywhere near that in compensation. And that’s something that we need to study more, because as we move forward, conservation just gets more expensive,” said Benson. The Imperial Irrigation District says it is working with the farmers on different water conservation efforts to help with part of the problem. “We provide supplemental funding so they’re able to purchase drip systems and sprinkler systems, tap water return systems, all kinds of new technologies and precision laser leveling of the field that allow them to continue to farm the way they always farm, but just using less water,” said Imperial Irrigation District Water Manager Tina Shields. If the seven states and Mexico cannot come to an agreement on how to use the Colorado River water by the 2026 deadline, the Bureau of Reclamation will step in and make the decisions.

A WARNING has been issued to dog walkers after reports of cocktail sausages contaminated with poison being placed in a Benfleet park. Castle Point Council issued a warning on social media “poison is being left in some of its parks” following claims the poison had been dumped in Woodside Park, in Manor Road. The warnings follow an incident in Canvey’s Kismet Park that saw a woman’s beloved pet dog poisoned twice after consuming rat poison in the park – with the council issuing a warning to dog owners over “continued reports” of poison being found in the park. Benfleet resident and dogwalker, Michael Dixon, has been left unsettled by the reports of the poisoning, a fear he has said is reflected in other dogwalkers. He said: “It’s deeply concerning to hear about poisoned sausages being left in the Woodside area, especially as a regular dog walker in the area. “I’ve been extra vigilant during my visits to ensure the safety of my dog and urge others to do the same.” The RSPCA has confirmed it has been made aware of reports in both Woodside Park and Kismet Park. Michael added: “When I walked there earlier, there were bread rolls someone put out, you don’t know and I saw the Facebook posts, it is not good and over the weekend it made me wary walking my dog. “I have spoken to some other people and they said they were wary, it got traction as people are now aware of this but do-gooders also do put things out for foxes and for dogs.” An RSPCA spokesperson said: “It is always concerning to hear reports of any alleged poisoning. “We do not know how these reported poisonings happened - but we would like to reassure the community that deliberate poisonings are very rare. “Accidental poisonings from everyday items are much more common so we are urging the community to be vigilant and be aware of the symptoms of poisoning. If you suspect your pet has been poisoned, take them to a vet immediately. “However, poisoning an animal on purpose is a criminal offence under the Animal Welfare Act, and if anyone has any first hand information about any such activities, they can contact the RSPCA, in confidence, on 0300 1234 999.” Castle Point Council has urged any concerned residents who spot poison in the parks to contact info@castlepoint.gov.uk and also to the RSPCA and Essex Police.
