Jaap Arriens/AP Weeks before the Supreme Court’s emergency session that could determine the fate of TikTok in the United States, Donald Trump on Friday issued a legal filing asking the high court to pause the law that would ban the Chinese-owned social media app if it isn’t sold by January 19. The filing did not comment on the legal arguments of the law, which was signed under President Biden over national security concerns that have mounted in recent years. Instead, it touted Trump as “one of the most powerful, prolific, and influential users of social media in history,” noting his 14.7 million followers on TikTok. The president also echoed TikTok’s arguments that the law illegally restricts the First Amendment. The filing marks the latest chapter in Trump’s shifting views regarding the popular app after he tried, and failed, to ban it in 2020. After meeting with TikTok’s CEO earlier this month, Trump hinted at possibly intervening before the law’s implementation, saying that he had a “warm spot” for the platform. In March, Trump experienced a similar reversal following a meeting with Jeff Yass, a conservative hedge-fund manager who happens to have a $33 billion stake in TikTok. All of this has come against the backdrop of Trump’s increasing coziness with some of tech’s most prominent billionaires. D. John Sauer, Trump’s lawyer and nominee for solicitor general, wrote on Friday: “President Trump takes no position on the underlying merits of this dispute. Instead, he respectfully requests that the Court consider staying the Act’s deadline for divestment of January 19, 2025, while it considers the merits of this case, thus permitting President Trump’s incoming Administration the opportunity to pursue a political resolution of the questions at issue in the case.” Whether the conservative Supreme Court with three Trump appointees will see the president-elect’s views as mere recommendations or as marching orders will be determined soon. As it stands now, the federal ban will go into effect next month—just one day before Trump’s inauguration, when as my colleague Pema Levy reports, an unprecedented era of political corruption will begin.

Marrakech Film Festival bestows Palestinian film 'Happy Holidays' with top awardBOSTON — The University of Connecticut capped off a season to remember with a 27-14 victory over the University of North Carolina in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl at Boston’s historic Fenway Park on Saturday. The win not only snapped UConn’s bowl-game losing streak but also marked a statement triumph over a Power Five opponent, ending UNC’s three-game dominance in their all-time series. “To UNC, they’re going through some turmoil,” UConn coach Jim Mora said after the game. “They’ve got a lot of change, lot of uncertainty, but they played hard. They never gave up. I thought (interim head coach) Freddie (Kitchens) did a great job of keeping that group together.” North Carolina announced former Patriots coach Bill Belichick as the new coach earlier this month, but Belichick did not attend Saturday’s game. For UConn senior defensive back Rante Jones, the victory was deeply personal. Reflecting on the team’s struggles and determination before the game, he admitted he felt overwhelmed by the moment. “To come out and get over the hump, it means a lot to us,” Jones said. “We’ve been battling 12 games straight to beat a Power Five team. They never said we could do it. Why not do it right now? Why not us?” Coming into the game, both teams were desperate to end their bowl game losing streaks. UNC had lost its last four, while UConn (9-4) was looking to erase a three-game skid. For the Huskies, though, this season had already been a revelation, capped off with their first eight-win regular season campaign since Randy Edsall led them to the Fiesta Bowl in January 2010. The Tar Heels, on the other hand, opened the season with promise, starting 3-0, only to endure a four-game losing streak, including an unexpected 70-50 defeat against James Madison. They bounced back with three wins to secure bowl eligibility but stumbled again with losses to Boston College and rival NC State to close out the regular season. Amid the disappointment, Tar Heel fans found a glimmer of hope when news broke that six-time Super Bowl champion Belichick will be taking over the program. However, Belichick’s absence at the media press conference on Friday — and confirmation that he would neither coach nor attend the game in Boston — left UNC (6-7) to focus on the more immediate challenges at hand. Already missing key players like star running back Omarion Hampton, left tackle Howard Sampson, and a slew of defensive starters, the Tar Heels suffered a devastating blow early in the first quarter. Quarterback Jacolby Criswell, scrambling on a second-and-16 play, was flattened by a massive hit, landing awkwardly on his shoulder and exiting the game. With their quarterback depth nearly nonexistent, UNC turned to freshman Michael Merdinger, who was already in the transfer portal, and senior running back Caleb Hood. The plan was to use Hood’s running ability on early downs while leaning on Merdinger for passing situations. Hood finished with an impressive 78 yards on 11 carries (7.1 yards per play), while Merdinger completed 9 of 12 passes but threw a costly interception. Ironically, it was Hood who delivered UNC’s lone offensive spark — a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end John Copenhaver in the fourth quarter. By then, UConn had already firmly seized control of the game. The Huskies opened the first quarter with fireworks as running back Mel Brown exploded for a 47-yard run on the very first play. To Mora, that moment epitomized the team’s mindset and laid the foundation for their dominate performance. “It’s huge,” Mora said. “It sets the tone, and it shows you, hey, we’re here for business. We respect you, but we don’t fear you. We’re gonna run it right at you. When you rip that off in the first play, the energy just goes through the roof.” The Huskies settled for a field goal after the momentum-shifting drive, but quarterback Joe Fagnano later launched a 36-yard strike to standout wide receiver Skylar Bell in the corner of the end zone, putting the team up 10-0. UNC briefly answered back with a 95-yard return touchdown from Chris Culliver on the ensuing kickoff, electrifying the Tar Heel faithful and cutting the deficit to 10-7. But UConn had an answer for everything. Running back Cam Edwards powered in for a 2-yard touchdown just before halftime, giving the Huskies a commanding 24-7 lead. From there, UConn’s defense held strong, ensuring the Tar Heels never got close enough to stage a comeback. For the Huskies, the victory was more than just a bowl win—it was the perfect ending to a season of resurgence. For UNC, the loss marked the end of a turbulent chapter, but also the beginning of a new era under the leadership of a legendary head coach.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) — U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has urged the Supreme Court to delay the TikTok ban in order to allow time for a negotiated solution, according to a legal document filed Friday. Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp The document was filed by John Sauer, whom Trump nominated to serve as Solicitor General, a position typically responsible for representing the U.S. government in appellate courts such as the Supreme Court. The document states that Trump opposes the immediate ban of TikTok in the United States and hopes to resolve the issue through political means after taking office. And Trump is skilled in negotiation and has the political will to reach a solution through talks, one that would address the government’s national security concerns while saving the platform. Trump has recently suggested that he may allow TikTok to continue operations in the United States. At an event hosted by the conservative organization Turning Point USA in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday, Trump said that the popular video-sharing app may have helped reach some key voters in the presidential election, and expressed the possibility of keeping TikTok around “for a little while.” In April, U.S. President Joe Biden enacted the law that gives ByteDance only 270 days to sell TikTok, citing unfounded national security concerns. If the company fails to comply, the law will require app store operators such as Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their platforms. In May, TikTok sued the U.S. government to block the potential ban, which has drawn widespread criticism. In early December, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. dismissed TikTok’s claim that the ban is unconstitutional. On Dec. 16, TikTok and its parent company ByteDance asked the Supreme Court to temporarily pause the law. TikTok argued that the potential ban would shutter one of America’s most popular speech platforms the day before a presidential inauguration, and “silence the speech of Applicants and the many Americans who use the platform to communicate about politics, commerce, arts, and other matters of public concern.” On Dec. 18, the Supreme Court agreed to review a request from TikTok and ByteDance to block the law. 0 SHARES Share Tweet
