Navigating the Future: Technology's promise, pitfalls, and path forwardThe Ministry of Health in Gaza has reported a devastating rise in casualties, with over 44,664 civilians killed and 105,976 injured since the escalation of Israeli hostilities began on 7 October 2023. Within the past 24 hours alone, Israeli forces carried out four massacres, resulting in 52 deaths and 142 injuries across the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army launched Saturday an unexpected and limited ground incursion into the northwest area of Rafah in southern Gaza. According to eyewitness accounts provided to Anadolu Agency, the operation occurred without prior warning to Palestinian residents. Medical teams evacuated some families trapped in the area, but dangerous conditions prevented the rescue of others. The United Nations Human Rights Office in the occupied Palestinian territories has condemned Israel’s targeting of displacement sites, warning that such actions “amount to war crimes” and could also qualify as crimes against humanity if part of a systematic attack on civilians. In a statement issued Friday, the UN highlighted a recent Israeli airstrike that hit a temporary displacement camp in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Yunis. The camp, located in a zone designated by Israel as a “safe humanitarian area,” housed 21 families. The UN has called for “independent investigations” into these attacks and urged the international community to uphold accountability for violations of international law. The ongoing Israeli operations in Gaza have drawn widespread criticism for their disregard for civilian safety. Despite declaring certain zones as “safe,” continued airstrikes and incursions have made evacuation efforts perilous. Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned of the deteriorating security and health conditions in the besieged enclave. The growing civilian death toll and the destruction of essential infrastructure have amplified calls for an immediate ceasefire and independent investigations into potential violations of international humanitarian law.
(Bloomberg) — China released three Americans as part of a prisoner swap between the Biden administration and the Chinese government, according to people familiar with the matter, a rare moment of cooperation between the adversaries. A statement from the US National Security Council said the three Americans — Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung — would be reunited with their families “for the first time in many years.” The three had been designated as wrongfully detained in China, and the US statement said there were no longer any Americans held in the country with that status. The NSC didn’t mention that the three were exchanged for Chinese citizens detained in the US. But two people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing non-public information, said they were swapped for an unspecified number of Chinese. “This is unprecedented,” said John Kamm, founder, chairman and executive director of the Dui Hua Foundation, a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of prisoners held in China. “Nothing like this has ever happened. Prisoner exchanges are not in China’s DNA.” The release offers a parting gift to President Joe Biden, Kamm said, as well as a message for President-elect Donald Trump that Beijing might be willing to make concessions in the future. The Chinese embassy in Washington had no immediate comment on the prisoner exchange. The names of the Chinese weren’t disclosed, and US officials declined to say when pressed. However, a US Bureau of Prisons database showed that two Chinese nationals, Xu Yanjun and Ji Chaoqun, were no longer in the bureau’s custody. China Frees US Pastor Jailed Almost 20 Years in Show of Goodwill Xu was sentenced in 2022 to 20 years in prison for what prosecutors alleged was years of espionage-related activities in his role as a career intelligence officer with China’s Ministry of State Security, including the attempted theft of confidential data on aircraft engine fans from General Electric Co.’s aviation division. Authorities said Xu was the first Chinese government intelligence officer ever to be extradited to the United States to stand trial. Xu was also accused of being Ji’s handler in the US. In 2016, Ji enlisted in the US Army Reserve. The swap would be the latest example of the US and allies being willing to give up convicted criminals and high-profile detainees in exchange for Americans deemed wrongfully held by other countries. That trend has been greeted with praise but also concern from Democrats and Republicans alike that it encourages other countries to seize Americans for future trades. In 2022, the US exchanged Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for WNBA star Brittney Griner. And a trade earlier this year saw Russia free Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former US Marine Paul Whelan and several others for Vadim Krasikov, who was serving a life sentence in Germany for the 2019 killing of a Chechen separatist in a Berlin park. Several other Russians convicted on a variety of criminal charges were also released. Among those released by China, Swidan is a Texas businessman who was on China’s death row for alleged drug trafficking, and Li is a naturalized US citizen who imported solar energy technology. Leung, who is also a Hong Kong permanent resident, was arrested in 2021 and sentenced to life in prison last year on spying charges. Swidan has been in Chinese custody for 12 years. Kamm said Swidan and Li have serious medical issues. “I suspect that this is so-called medical parole, a humanitarian gesture,” he said. In a statement, Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas praised the efforts of the Biden administration in securing the release of the Americans, noting that Swidan’s mother, a Texas resident, has waged “an unremitting battle” to bring him home. “President Biden, Secretary of State Blinken, Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Carstens, Ambassador Burns, and their teams have for years worked tirelessly to secure this achievement, and I am deeply grateful for all their efforts,” Cruz said. —With assistance from Jordan Robertson and Jamie Tarabay. A small asteroid was visible in northern Siberia on Tuesday, as it closed in on its collision course with Earth. It's first of two expected flybys this week. The European Space Agency issued an alert for the 27-inch asteroid at 4:27 a.m. ET, with the agency saying the celestial rock would create a visible fireball in the sky but that "the impact will be harmless." The asteroid, temporarily named C0WEPC5, has become Earth's fourth detected asteroid strike of the year and just the 11th of all time. Detected strikes are known as "imminent impactors," according to the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona, which identified the fast-moving asteroid ahead of its arrival. The space rock entered Earth's atmosphere at 11:15 a.m. ET over Yakutia in northeastern Siberia, creating a massive fireball witnessed by people in the region, according to the agency. Video posted to social media on Tuesday shows the bright, fast-moving fireball darting through the sky before dissipating. It's currently unknown how much, if any, of the asteroid debris landed on Earth. Flyby asteroids are common, and astronomers' ability to detect them has rapidly increased with technological advancements. According to NASA , 132 known asteroids have passed closer to Earth than the moon is since October 2023. Overall, there have been upward of 36,000 asteroid flybys, the agency reported. Adding to the solar system show this week, another asteroid, known as 2020 XR, will fly by Earth at 12:27 a.m. ET on Wednesday, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory . Significantly larger but much farther away from impact than Tuesday's asteroid, 2020 XR is approximately 1,200 feet in diameter -- roughly the same as the height of New York City's Empire State Building -- but will pass Earth at a comfortable distance of 1.37 million miles, according to NASA. While the massive asteroid will unlikely have any impact, and is not considered a threat by officials, NASA designates any object that comes within 4.6 million miles of Earth as "potentially hazardous."
Built in extreme cold in the 1970s and 1980s, the 2,600 mile-plus Baikal-Amur mainline railway pierces through eastern Siberia to the Sea of Japan. It is one of countless pieces of technology fashioned during the US-Soviet space race to have accelerated the development of personal electronics. In a command economy encompassing various countries including the USSR, the resources of each member state were typically channelled toward reaching specific goals mapped out by a centralised political committee. When the Iron Curtain still divided East and West, Poland was central to this process and, in terms of innovative achievements, outperformed many of its Soviet peers. Trump's team to lead his trade agenda and the American economy include trade lawyers, former advisers and Wall Street executives who have all expressed favourable views of tariffs. "He's choosing a lot of people who are going to be loyal to him and his ideas," said Matthew Lebo, a specialist in U.S. politics at Western University in London, Ont. "And that probably will lead to a lot more volatility than even we saw in the first term." On Tuesday evening, Trump picked Jamieson Greer to be U.S. trade representative. The president-elect said Greer played a key role in the first Trump administration imposing tariffs on China and negotiating the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. If confirmed, Greer will oversee the trade pact’s review in 2026. "Jamieson will focus the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative on reining in the country's massive trade deficit, defending American manufacturing, agriculture, and services, and opening up export markets everywhere," Trump said in a statement. Greer was the chief of staff to former U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer as the trilateral agreement was being crafted to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was torn up last time Trump entered office. Greer's nomination came the day after Trump said he will impose a 25 per cent import tariff on goods coming from Canada and Mexico. He has also announced an additional 10 per cent tariff on goods from China. Trump said the tariffs against Canada and Mexico would remain in place until both countries stop people and drugs, in particular fentanyl, from illegally crossing the border into the U.S. A Canadian Chamber of Commerce report suggested Trump’s previous pledge to impose a 10 per cent levy would take a $30-billion bite out of the Canadian economy. More than 77 per cent of Canadian exports go to the U.S. and trade comprises 60 per cent of Canada's gross domestic product. Some economists have warned across-the-board duties would cause inflation in the U.S., even though Trump campaigned on lowering costs for Americans. Greer was deeply involved in Trump's original sweeping tariffs on China and subsequent negotiations on the U.S.-China Phase 1 trade agreement, online biographies say. In testimony about China's trade agenda at a House trade subcommittee last year, Greer said he believes "good fences make good neighbours, and trade enforcement is an important part of establishing those fences." On Tuesday, Trump also tapped Kevin Hassett to be the director of the White House National Economic Council. The role will be key in fulfilling Trump's campaign promise to fix the U.S. economy. His announcement said Hassett will also "ensure that we have fair trade with countries that have taken advantage of the United States in the past." Hassett served during the first Trump term as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and the president-elect has called him a "true friend." The latest nominations round out an economic team that includes hedge fund executive Scott Bessent for Treasury secretary and Howard Lutnick, the CEO of Wall Street investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald, who was tapped for commerce secretary. If confirmed by the Senate, Lutnick would oversee a sprawling cabinet agency and Trump's tariff agenda. He has been a vocal supporter of Trump's tariff plans. In an CNBC interview in September he said tariffs are "an amazing tool for the president to use — we need to protect the American worker." Lebo said as Trump prepares to return to office he is removing any person who could prove to be a guardrail or check on his power. "These are people aligned with Trump," Lebo said. "More and more aligned with his campaign rhetoric."
