Army Working on Precision Strike Missile Increment 5I tend to have a Goldilocks-like approach when it comes to choosing socks. I almost exclusively wear crew socks that come no higher than mid-calf, and they all have to meet specific criteria, they can’t: be too thin or too thick or have that bumpy, uncomfortable seam at the end around the toes that certain socks always have. And, like with most apparel, they have to hold up after multiple washes. This means near-zero pilling, warping or tears around the big toe area. For me, the answer has always — or at least for the last five years — been Uniqlo’s Colorful 50 Socks . While I’m always tempted to try out more luxe options from authorities like Bombas or Smartwool , I always end up back at Uniqlo because its socks are incredibly comfortable, considerably soft and practically tear-resistant — all at a great price point. Uniqlo’s Colorful crew-cut socks come in 50 shades and hit at the middle or lower-half of the calf, depending on the person wearing them. They’re made from a blend of cotton, polyester, nylon, acrylic and spandex and one pair is slightly less than $5. They’re also machine washable. On the surface, socks are a pretty straight-forward piece of apparel, meant to protect our feet in various types of shoes, physical activity and weather. In my experience, not all socks provide the same amount of comfort, durability, softness and moisture-wicking properties, if at all. Plus, many clothing brands don’t allow for much self-expression when it comes to socks. Uniqlo’s socks are my go-to for just about any activity and shoe type. I wear them with Adidas sneakers to work, running and athletic shoes, clogs, snow boots and by themselves to stay warm while lounging at home. In addition to washing them regularly, I also stock up on new ones every year, and I’m always excited to step foot into its store to see what new colors I haven’t gotten yet. Comfort and softness aren’t guaranteed with every pair of socks, that is, unless we’re talking about my beloved Uniqlos. For the past five years, I’ve worn these with just about every shoe option and can say that they’ve never failed me in the comfort department. The toe-end of the socks don’t have a misshapen seam that’s uncomfortable to walk in — a pet peeve of mine. These socks are also the ideal fit for me. They aren’t too loose or tight, even over years of wear. When crew socks are too tight, they often pull on leg hair around my calf, which hurts more than people without leg hair may think. That said, they also don’t get too stretched after multiple wears and washes, and they have yet to ever get a hole in the toe area. I can’t talk about these socks without mentioning its vast choice of colorways. While some people may be more neutral when it comes to socks, I enjoy getting socks with a little flare. This is part of why I’ve always loved Uniqlo’s Colorful 50 Socks — the brand doesn’t skimp on creativity or view them as a mundane piece of apparel. I typically go for some variation of brown, gray or green, though every once in a while I mix things up with an ocean blue or burnt orange. Perhaps the most important aspect for me when it comes to socks, durability is one of the best characteristics of Uniqlo’s Colorful 50 Socks. Today, I still have pairs that I got years ago and wash regularly, and they’re still holding up. Some have a small amount of pilling around them, but I can attribute that to washing them with too much heat. The brand recommends washing them in cold water only and, according to my reporting on the best way to clean different kinds of fabrics , using cool or warm air to dry them is best. That said, I don’t have in-unit machines and I have to pay for every eight minutes of drying time, so I frequently turn up the heat to make the process faster. If you’re looking for an affordable sock option that will last you at least a few years at a time, Uniqlo’s Colorful 50 Socks are one of your best bets. They aren’t the same exact material as more expensive options, but they’re great quality and come at an amazing price point. I wear them all year, though they aren’t quite thick enough to wear on those absolutely freezing days. Overall, they’re a thoughtful gift or stocking stuffer , either to family members or yourself. I’m a commerce editor at NBC Select, where I write about home and kitchen topics, such as the best way to whiten clothes without bleach and how to clean a cast iron skillet . I also write about sale events at home furniture and appliance retailers like Home Depot and Wayfair. For this article, I wrote about Uniqlo’s Colorful 50 Socks, which I’ve worn daily for the past five years. 2025 NFL draft order: Giants keep pace for top pick after Week 12's early gamesAP News Summary at 1:07 p.m. ESTKeith Gill, widely known by his X social-media handle ‘Roaring Kitty,’ returned to the platform after a three-month hiatus, sending meme stocks into a tizzy. Through his Reddit posts and YouTube videos, Gill was responsible for the massive 2021 GameStop short squeeze that sent the stock from single-digit levels to over $120. He went silent on social media in June 2021 before returning in May this year. Since then, Gill has been posting cryptic pictures on and off on X. Later, using his ‘DFV’ handle, he posted a screenshot of his trading account showing a huge GameStop position on the r/Superstonk Reddit thread and updated it a few times. On Thursday, he shared a Time Magazine cover picture atop a personal computer’s video screen, which is paused at 1:09 of the 04:20 total duration. The post assumes importance as GameStop is scheduled to report its fiscal year 2024 third-quarter results after the market closes on Dec. 10. Analysts, on average, expect the company to report a loss of $0.03 compared to break-even results a year ago. Revenue is expected to decline from $1.08 billion to $887.68 million. GameStop stock, which was hugging the unchanged line until the post, went parabolic on above-average volume. Since then, it has lost some of its gains. The stock settled Thursday's session up 5.83% at $28.60, after moving in a $26.15-$30.87 range. Fellow meme stocks also capitalized on the frenzy. Shares of theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. ($AMC) ended the session up 5.73% at $5.19, also on above-average volume. Earlier in the day, it rose as high as $5.56. Chewy, Inc. ($CHWY), another meme candidate, did not partake in the rally as the shares of the pet food and supplies retailer slumped over 6.5% following the company’s quarterly results reported Wednesday. Following the post, retail sentiment toward GameStop flipped from ‘bearish’ to ‘bullish’ accompanied by an improvement in message volume to ‘high.’ But sentiment has since then tempered to 'neutral.' On AMC, the retail mood turned ‘extremely bullish' (88/100), with message volume spiking to ‘extremely high’ levels. Some in the retail crowd set their sights on $10 for AMC and $40 for GameStop. A few, however, cautioned regarding a “pump-and-dump.” Email newsroom[at]stocktwits[dot]com for updates and corrections.<

A landmark defence pact between North Korea and Russia, signed by its leaders in June, has gone into effect after the two sides exchanged ratification documents, North Korea's official KCNA news agency said Thursday. The formalization of the treaty comes as the United States and South Korea have accused the nuclear-armed North of sending more than 10,000 soldiers to help Russia fight Ukraine. Experts say North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is keen to acquire advanced technology from Moscow and battle experience for his troops in return. Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the strategic partnership deal during the Kremlin chief's visit to Pyongyang. It obligates both states to provide military assistance "without delay" in the case of an attack on the other, and to jointly oppose Western sanctions. It came into effect from Wednesday, when the ratification documents were exchanged in Moscow by the countries' vice foreign ministers Kim Jong Gyu and Andrei Rudenko, KCNA reported. Lawmakers in Moscow last month voted unanimously for the deal and it was later signed by Putin. Pyongyang said it was ratified by a decree from Kim. The treaty will serve "as a strong driving force accelerating the establishment of an independent and just multi-polarized world order without domination, subjugation and hegemony," KCNA said. Analysts have suggested Pyongyang could be using Ukraine as a means of realigning its foreign policy. By sending soldiers, North Korea is positioning itself within the Russian war economy as a supplier of weapons, military support and labour — potentially even bypassing traditional ally, neighbour and main trading partner China, they say. North Korea and Russia have strengthened their military ties since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both countries are under rafts of UN sanctions -- the former for its nuclear weapons programme and the latter for the Ukraine conflict. Kim said last week during a visit to Pyongyang by Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov that his government, army and people would "invariably support the policy of the Russian Federation to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity". Putin hailed the deal in June as a "breakthrough document". bur-sst/bjtChelsea’s surprise defeat by Fulham meant victory over the Foxes stretched their lead to seven points, with a match in hand, with the halfway point of the campaign fast approaching. The league table is something of course we are aware of but we always understand how many games there are to go.” Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy felt his side held their own until Salah scored in the 82nd minute. “I think we were in the contest for a result for a long time,” he said. “Three-one was the turning point in the sense the game was done there to get a result. “I think the 60th minute I remember a chanced for Daka to score the equaliser so we were in the game to get a surprising result. “We did well, we did what we could: a good start with the goal but if you speak of a turning point, 3-1 with Salah, the game was done.” Van Nistelrooy left goalkeeper Danny Ward out of the squad after he struggled in the defeat to Wolves and was jeered by his own fans. “The change in goal was one to make and the conversation with Wardy was impressive, the way he was thinking of the team and the club,” added the Dutchman. “I insisted on a conversation and of course it is a private conversation but what I want to share is the person and the professional he is. “I was impressed with that and his willingness for the team and the club to do well. “Really tough what happened for him. We are professionals but human beings as well, when frustration is being directed towards one person that is difficult.”

Aussie has reportedly split with her long-time partner, just months after making comments about wanting to start a family in the near future. Details emerged this week that Fox and partner Mathieu Biazizzo parted ways earlier in 2024 after nine years together. The couple are said to have quietly split in May, before . It's believed the long-distance relationship with Frenchman Biazizzo - a fellow kayaker and canoeist - took a toll. The relationship between Fox and Biazizzo was kept rather quiet during their nine years together. He is also a professional slalom canoeist and kayaker and has competed for France at a number of world championships. In 2016 he won the K1 world title. Just last year Fox had spoken about the relationship and her desire to start a family and become a mother in the not-too distant future. “There’s always a bit of competition, especially if we’re training together,” she said about Biazizzo. “It is really special to be able to share that together. And the fact that he understands what I’m going through. It also helps that we go to bed early together. “Maybe there’ll be an opportunity to see if I want to have a baby and come back. They’re conversations that we’ll definitely be having in the next few years, probably.” Fans have been sending well-wishes to Fox on social media after the split was made public on Thursday. Neither Fox or Biazizzo have commented on the news. The 30-year-old . She's won three gold medals, a silver and two bronze from four Olympic Games, as well as 22 world championship medals - the most of any paddler. But she is craving more and won't be slowing down anytime soon. "It is that question of how do you stay motivated," she told AAP late last month. "And the day that I don't have that hunger to train like it is required and to race and I lose that enjoyment for my sport, then that is the day that I stop. "For me, I am lucky. I love what I do, I have got an amazing team who help me be the best I can be and I love pushing myself in training. And next year we have got the world championships in Penrith so that is what is going to keep me hungry and excited for the next 12 months. And after that, it's that build-up to LA (the 2028 Olympics)." Fox was given the honour of being Australia's flag bearer at the opening ceremony at this year's Olympics in Paris, where she also shared the joy of seeing . The Fox sisters have shot to superstardom in the months that have followed, , while Jess won Sport NSW's athlete of the year for a sixth time and has become an A-list celebrity. "Definitely still pinching myself ... at the moment there is multi-tasking happening all the time," she said. "It has been an incredible time being at home and having that time now to reflect and to celebrate. "Winning gold obviously means it is more visible and your sport is more visible. But I didn't realise just how big that was and how many people watched and how many people were invested in for me the K1 and then the C1. "And then how many followed Noemie's journey and that whole story and family moment really resonated with people and inspired so many. It made them feel emotion. And that is what is so beautiful about this sport. You're there for the thrill of the ride and you're feeling to joy ... but it's incredible to see the impact that it has had on people."U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin bids farewell to Capitol Hill with criticism of Democrats and calls for a third partyHezbollah rockets land near Tel Aviv after big Israeli strike on Beirut
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin bucked his party in 2021 when he refused to support a $1.8 trillion bill on taxes, social programs and clean energy, thus dooming President Joe Biden's "Build Back Better" initiative. Then this month, in one of his final actions as a member of Congress, he also bucked his party and voted against a nominee that would have continued the Democratic majority on the National Labor Relations Board once both he and Biden leave office. In between, Manchin played outsized roles in Biden's economic stimulus program and his infrastructure bill, as well as the smaller climate change and health care law that came out of the wreckage of Build Back Better. In exit interviews, Manchin, I-W.Va., said his former party had gone too far to the left and left him in a position he did not want — the one individual who could make or break legislation. "I did not run for that position," Manchin told the Washington Post. "I did not try to wedge myself in that and be the deciding vote." He said he made it clear once the Democrats won the trifecta of the White House, Senate and House in 2021 that he was not going to be a guaranteed "yes" vote. "I don't work for you," he said he told his colleagues, according to the Post interview. "You didn't hire me and you can't fire me. I work for the people of West Virginia on behalf of the United States government. That's who I have to answer to, and if this stuff doesn't make sense no matter how bad you want it, I can't vote for it." None of Biden's major accomplishments — the economic stimulus package, the infrastructure law, the climate change and health care measure, and the funding to bring manufacturing, including those of computer chips, back to the U.S. — would have passed without Manchin's vote. "Each of these victories required senators to come together from both sides of the aisle to find solutions for Americans," he said on the Senate floor earlier this month in his farewell speech. "These were bills that just made common sense. And when each side could take just a little step to find common ground, powerful things have happened." In his closing weeks as a senator, he touted funding in those bills for clean energy manufacturing in West Virginia coal communities, for a new hanger at a small West Virginia airport and for a carbon storage hub in the state. He singled out the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (Arch2), which will receive up to $925 million in federal funding for projects in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. "You can't eliminate your way to a cleaner environment, you can innovate it," Manchin said in his floor speech. "That's why we funded the development of regional hydrogen hubs and made sure one of them would be in the Appalachia region." His closing words on the Senate floor also talked about the need for lawmakers to work together, and his support for the filibuster that requires 60 votes — support from both parties — to pass legislation. But it didn't always work, he said. Popular legislation such as overhauling immigration laws and expanding background checks for guns failed, he said. "These opportunities were missed because we've let politics get in the way of doing our job," he said in his floor speech. "I am not saying that dealing with politics is easy. It's not. It's messy. I've had my share of tough votes. At times, I have felt like the whole Senate was united — in being upset with me. So sometimes I guess we did come together." Harsh words for Democrats Manchin officially left the Democratic Party in May and registered as an independent. He continued to caucus with his fellow Democrats until the end. But he's leaving office with some harsh words for the party he left behind. After all, he said, he wasn't the only person who left the Democratic Party. "The brand got so bad. The 'D' brand has been so maligned from the standpoint of — it's just — it's toxic," he said in the CNN interview. He said Democrats have been telling people what they have to believe in and what they have to do, no matter how outrageous. "The Democrat I grew up being, they wanted to make sure that people had an opportunity for a good job, a good pay," he told CNN. "I will protect you. Just don't try to mainstream it. And the Democratic Party, the Washington Democrats, have tried to mainstream the extreme. ...They have — they have basically, expanded upon thinking, well, we want to protect you there, but we're going to tell you how you should live your life." He never endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in 2024, and said the election results showed that Americans didn't want someone on the left. He said it was "nuts" and "completely insane" to say Harris lost because she wasn't progressive enough. The problem was that her liberal voting record made it hard for her to pivot to the center in the fall campaign, he said, "They're saying if Kamala would have been who she always has been, pretty far to the left, it would have been better for her. That's crazy," Manchin told CNN. "Basically, she was having a hard time trying to come back to the middle and then speak about it with any conviction. If you try to be somebody you're not, it's hard." Manchin resisted entreaties that he run for president as an independent in 2024, lest he be a spoiler. But he said there was room for a real third party. "The centrist part of both parties," he said on CNN. "So the centrist moderate vote decides who's going to be the president of the United States. And when they get here, they don't govern that way. Neither side does. They go to their respective corners. So if a centrist had a voice and had a party that could make both of these, the Democrat and Republican Party come back, OK, that would be something." Manchin told CNN that the new organization would be called the American Party, and while he wouldn't lead it, "I'll be the best cheerleader they've ever had." (c)2024 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
