The 2nd-year pro out of Florida, Richardson was benched earlier this season for a couple games before returning in impressive fashion completing 20 of 30 passes, throwing for 272 yards, and most importantly, leading the Colts to a 28-27 win over the Jets. However, Richardson was less than good last weekend against the Lions completing just 11 of 28 passes for 172 yards in a 24-6 loss to Detroit. Like Richardson in Indy, Drake Maye has had his ups and downs this season. The rookie out of North Carolina was also good two weeks ago in a 28-22 loss to the Rams completing 75% of his passes and throwing for 282 yards. However, the rookie out of North Carolina struggled last weekend. Like Richardson, accuracy has been a recurring issue for the young signal-caller. He completed just 22 of 37 passes at Miami in a loss to the Dolphins. Both Indianapolis and New England have much invested in these two young quarterbacks. It will be interesting to see if either show progress this weekend in the Northeast. (The Center Square) – House Oversight Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., has opened an investigation into the Federal Emergency Management Agency over reports that it discriminated against supporters of Donald Trump. Comer said whistleblower reports suggest anti-Trump discrimination is rampant and has been going on for years. “[O]n the condition of anonymity, a FEMA official stated that the practice avoiding ‘white or conservative-dominated’ areas is an ‘open secret at the agency that has been going on for years,’” Comer said in a letter to FEMA. The investigation comes after FEMA fired one of its hurricane response supervisors after news went viral that she told her workers to avoid “Trump houses.” However, that employee has publicly said she was only following orders and acting according to the culture at FEMA. Comer and more than two dozen Republican lawmakers sent a letter to FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell demanding documentation, from internal policies to spending figures to incident reports. Lawmakers have pointed toward more anonymous sources backing up the fired employee’s claims. “Additionally, another whistleblower contacted the Committee during the hearing," the letter said. "This individual informed the Committee that a FEMA contractor warned a disabled veteran’s family in Georgia to remove Trump campaign materials from their home because FEMA supervisors viewed Trump supporters as domestic terrorists. At a hearing this week, U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., pointed to 35 of his constituents who shared similar stories with him. Lawmakers grilled Criswell over the discrimination reports at the hearing as well as FEMA’s recent focus on Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts, something FEMA named as its number one goal in its latest strategic report. Lawmakers also raised concerns about the agency spending hundreds of millions of dollars on helping migrants. Defenders of FEMA have said the migrant funds do not take directly from disaster relief, while critics insist it shows missplaced priorities for the emergency relief agency. “In the fiscal year of 2023, FEMA spent nearly a billion dollars, $789 million, to shelter illegals in the United States,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-Ga., said at the hearing, as The Center Square previously reported . “This past year it was $641 million, and this money is largely distributed through NGOs...and this was to house illegal aliens," she added. "Not Americans, who by the way all that money, that comes from Americans bank accounts when they write their checks to pay their taxes." At the hearing this week, Criswell also said she will request the Inspector General investigate the question of political discrimination at FEMA. She also said she does not think this fired employee is indicative of a broader problem in the agency but is looking into it. Criswell said FEMA workers went back to the homes that were skipped over by the fired employee and promised to ensure it doesn't happen again. “The Committee is in the process of investigating these claims,” the Oversight letter said. “If they are true, they would corroborate concerns that political discrimination extends beyond [the fired FEMA employee]. Furthermore, they suggest an apparent culture, whether sanctioned or not, within FEMA to politically discriminate against disaster survivors, specifically those who support President-elect Donald Trump.”Taylor Swift makes heartwarming first appearance since ending Eras Tour — and it's so kind

President-elect Donald Trump called his meeting with Justin Trudeau productive and says the prime minister made a commitment to work with the United States to end the drug crisis amid the threat of stiff tariffs. Trudeau flew to Florida Friday evening to attend a dinner at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump's transition team is based. The in-person meeting came at the end of a rocky week in which Trump threatened to impose stiff tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico, unless the two countries stop illegal border crossings and prevent illicit drugs from entering the U.S. In a post on Truth Social, Trump says he and Trudeau discussed the drug crisis, particularly fentanyl, illegal immigration, as well as trade, energy and the Arctic. Trump's post did not directly mention tariffs. Trudeau told reporters in West Palm Beach Saturday morning that he had an excellent conversation with Trump’s transition team. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 30, 2024. The Canadian PressTrump threatens 100% tariff on the BRIC bloc of nations if they act to undermine US dollar

Duo closing in on a return to action in boost for injury stricken SpursThe US State and Treasury departments said they hit Georgian Dream party founder and honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili with penalties “for undermining the democratic and Euro-Atlantic future of Georgia for the benefit of the Russian Federation”, according to a statement. The designation of Mr Ivanishvili is the latest in a series of sanctions the US has placed on Georgian politicians and others this year. Those sanctions include freezes on assets and properties those targeted may have in US jurisdictions or that might enter US jurisdictions as well as travel bans on the targets and members of their families. “We strongly condemn Georgian Dream’s actions under Ivanishvili’s leadership, including its ongoing and violent repression of Georgian citizens, protesters, members of the media, human rights activists, and opposition figures,” the State Department said in a statement. “The United States is committed to promoting accountability for those undermining democracy and human rights in Georgia.” Mr Ivanishvili is a billionaire who made his fortune in Russia and served briefly as Georgia’s prime minister. In 2012, he founded Georgian Dream, Georgia’s longtime ruling party. Critics have accused Georgian Dream of becoming increasingly authoritarian and tilted towards Moscow. The party recently pushed through laws similar to those used by the Kremlin to crack down on freedom of speech and LGBT+ rights, prompting the European Union to suspend Georgia’s membership application process indefinitely. In October, Georgian Dream won another term in a divisive parliamentary election that has led to more mass protests. Last month, the country’s prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced a four-year suspension of talks on Georgia’s bid to join the European Union, fuelling further public outrage.

AP News Summary at 3:58 p.m. ESTNEW YORK (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres can carry the good cheer of ending the longest losing streak in the NHL this season into their holiday break. Buffalo routed the New York Islanders 7-1 on Monday night, scoring twice in the first, three times in the second and twice more in the third to snap a 13-game (0-10-3) month of futility. After the win, there was palpable relief heading into the break as the Sabres are off until Saturday, when they host the Chicago Blackhawks. Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin had four assists, the most by a defenseman this season. He stressed that achieving victory is satisfying for the moment, but only a step in a long process ahead. “We battled for a long time and finally it went our way,’’ said Dahlin, the first Buffalo defenseman with four assists in a game since February 2008. “Now, it’s up to us to keep this thing going.” The Sabres last won at San Jose, 4-2, on Nov. 23. What followed was a vexing run in which they dropped six one-goal games and were outscored 53-28. The low point was a 5-4 loss to Colorado on Dec. 3 in which Buffalo became the 90th team in NHL history to squander a four-or-more goal lead. Buffalo is last in the Eastern Conference with 28 points. Against the Islanders and following a hard-fought 3-1 loss at Boston on Saturday, the Sabres were solid from start to finish in scoring seven goals for the first time this season. They were so dominant, that boos rained down on the host Islanders at UBS Arena. “It was huge to score some goals, and it was good to have a complete game,’’ said forward Jason Zucker, who scored Buffalo’s third goal. “It’s really hard not to overthink when you’ve lost that many in a row, so I give our guys credit. It was fun to get that win going into the break." The Sabres started their season 4-7-1, then won seven of nine games before the skid began. That led to renewed angst in Buffalo because the Sabres haven't reached the playoffs since 2011. Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff, who returned to the team last summer, was supportive during his squad's month of frustration. The 64-year-old Ruff previously coached the Sabres from 1997-2013 and has seen virtually everything in his long coaching career. He was succinct in praising his club after their dedicated road effort. “We denied a lot of plays in our end. It was a determined game,’’ Ruff said. “The bench had a lot of life. It’s a weight off our shoulders.” Tage Thompson, who leads the Sabres with 17 goals, said Monday's win proved that focused hard work is the way forward for his team. "Tonight we said shift after shift we're going to do the right things and let the chips fall when there they may," he said.

OPP issue drug and traffic charges following single vehicle collision near HanoverA Hastings man was arrested for allegedly attempting to entice two 13-year-old girls into having sex with him. Marcus Jones, 38, was arrested at 1421 S. Eddy St. on Dec. 23 after a two- month investigation by the Grand Island Police Department. Jones On Oct. 18, Jones allegedly reached out to one of the 13-year-olds through social media. According to Capt. Dean Elliott, Jones would later begin to message the other 13-year-old through social media. However, both of the minors were actually undercover police accounts, according to Police Capt. Dean Elliott. “Mr. Jones was conversing with both accounts separately,” Capt. Elliott said. “And ultimately then conversed with both accounts at the same time and wanted to set up a meet with both 13-year-old females to take them to a local hotel and have sexual encounters with them at the same time.” Jones After learning of the minors’ ages, Jones began to discuss inappropriate topics with the two of them. On Dec. 18, Jones separately told both the girls that he wanted to be sexual with both of them. Jones repeated the sentiment on Dec. 19, but also told one of the girls that he had booked a hotel room for the three of them. Jones began conversing with both of the girls on a group chat on Dec. 20. According to Capt. Elliott, Jones appeared to have groomed one or both of the minors, telling them to research sexual terms on the internet to educate themselves before they were to meet. Jones was arrested at the designated meetup location at 9:36 a.m. Jones was charged with seven felony accounts of enticement by electronic device for sexual assault. “It’s enticement for sex acts,” Capt. Elliott said. “There was no sex act that actually occurred, it was the enticement for those sexual acts, or for sexual assault.” At the time of writing, Jones was being held at the Hall County Department of Corrections. Former prime minister Scott Morrison has called out the Albanese government after it received scathing criticism from Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu over Australia's position on Palestine at the UN. The Israeli Prime Minister accused Australia of inviting "terrorism" by supporting Palestine in UN motions. Mr Morrison took to social media early on Friday morning to lament the straining of relations between Israel and Australia. "Shameful. Labor have betrayed freedom and their own proud heritage on Israel," he posted on X. "They have ended bipartisanship on Israel in Australia and been played the fool by accepting the lie of antisemitism masquerading as progressivism." Foreign Minister Penny Wong supported a UN resolution recognising "permanent sovereignty" of Palestinians in November. The move came as a surprise with Sky News revealing last month Australia's top UN diplomats recommended the government abstain from the resolution, in order to maintain Canberra's position over the past decade, and remain consistent with the views of Canada and the United States. Earlier this week, the Albanese government again backed a UN motion in favour of Palestine, supporting an "irreversible pathway" to Palestinian statehood while also calling for Israel to withdraw its "unlawful presence" from the West Bank, Gaza and eastern Jerusalem. Australia's decision marked a two-decade change in its position on the matter, having last backed the Palestinian statehood resolution under the Howard government. The resolution passed 157-8, with Argentina, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and key Australian ally, the United States of America, voting against, while seven members abstained from the vote. A statement released from Netanyahu's office condemned Australia's new position, saying Australia's "flip-flop is disappointing". “Awarding anti-Semitism and terrorism with a state in the heart of the Jewish ancient homeland and cradle of civilisation will invite more terrorism and more anti-Semitic riots at campuses and city centres, including in Australia," the statement said. “To the contrary, they have embraced those atrocities that included the rape, murder and beheading of Jews. It’s a shame that the current Australian government wants to award these savages with a state. “Thankfully, our key allies support Israel as we strive for true peace and security." The Israeli Prime Minister's criticism comes after Australian Opposition Leader Peter Dutton claimed Anthony Albanese abandoned the Jewish community to win votes in Western Sydney. “He sold the Jewish community out in this country for Green votes in western Sydney and in places like Marrickville (in Mr Albanese’s seat),” Mr Dutton said. “I think we should be standing with allies like the United States. Instead, the Albanese government is chasing Green votes and they’ve been prepared to sacrifice the wellbeing of the Jewish community here in Australia to do so.”

Stock market today: Wall Street slips to a rare back-to-back lossJERUSALEM — A new round of Israeli airstrikes in Yemen on Thursday targeted the Houthi rebel-held capital and multiple ports, while the World Health Organization’s director-general said the bombardment occurred nearby as he prepared to board a flight in Sanaa, with a crew member injured. “The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge — just a few meters from where we were — and the runway were damaged,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on the social media platform X. He added that he and U.N. colleagues were safe. “We will need to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave,” he said, without mentioning the source of the bombardment. U.N. spokesperson Stephanie Tremblay later said the injured person was with the U.N. Humanitarian Air Service. Israel’s army later told The Associated Press it wasn’t aware that the WHO chief or delegation was at the location in Yemen. The Israeli strikes followed several days of Houthi launches setting off sirens in Israel. The Israeli military in a statement said it attacked infrastructure used by the Iran-backed Houthis at the international airport in Sanaa and ports in Hodeida, Al-Salif and Ras Qantib, along with power stations, asserting they were used to smuggle in Iranian weapons and for the entry of senior Iranian officials. Israel’s military added it had “capabilities to strike very far from Israel’s territory — precisely, powerfully, and repetitively.” The strikes, carried out over 1,000 miles from Jerusalem, came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “the Houthis, too, will learn what Hamas and Hezbollah and Assad’s regime and others learned” as his military has battled those more powerful proxies of Iran. The Houthi-controlled satellite channel al-Masirah reported multiple deaths and showed broken windows, collapsed ceilings and a bloodstained floor and vehicle. Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the strikes. The U.S. military also has targeted the Houthis in recent days. The U.N. has said the targeted ports are important entryways for humanitarian aid for Yemen, the poorest Arab nation that plunged into a civil war in 2014 . Over the weekend, 16 people were wounded when a Houthi missile hit a playground in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv , while other missiles and drones have been shot down. Last week, Israeli jets struck Sanaa and Hodeida, killing nine people, calling it a response to previous Houthi attacks. The Houthis also have been targeting shipping on the Red Sea corridor, calling it solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The U.N. Security Council has an emergency meeting Monday in response to an Israeli request that it condemn the Houthi attacks and Iran for supplying them weapons. 5 journalists killed in Gaza Meanwhile, an Israeli strike killed five Palestinian journalists outside a hospital in Gaza overnight , the territory’s Health Ministry said. The Israeli military said all were militants posing as reporters. The strike hit a car outside Al-Awda Hospital in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The journalists were working for local news outlet Al-Quds Today, a television channel affiliated with the Islamic Jihad militant group. Islamic Jihad is a smaller and more extreme ally of Hamas and took part in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel that ignited the war. Israel’s military identified four of the men as combat propagandists and said that intelligence, including a list of Islamic Jihad operatives found by soldiers in Gaza, had confirmed that all five were affiliated with the group. Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian militant groups operate political, media and charitable operations in addition to their armed wings. Associated Press footage showed the incinerated shell of a van, with press markings visible on the back doors. Sobbing young men attended the funeral. The bodies were wrapped in shrouds, with blue press vests draped over them. The Committee to Protect Journalists says more than 130 Palestinian reporters have been killed since the start of the war. Israel hasn’t allowed foreign reporters to enter Gaza except on military embeds. Israel has banned the pan-Arab Al Jazeera network and accused six of its Gaza reporters of being militants . The Qatar-based broadcaster denies the allegations and accuses Israel of trying to silence its war coverage, which has focused heavily on civilian casualties from Israeli military operations. Another Israeli soldier killed Separately, Israel’s military said a 35-year-old reserve soldier was killed during fighting in central Gaza. A total of 389 soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the ground operation. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed across the border, killing around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250. About 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third believed to be dead. Israel’s air and ground offensive has killed more than 45,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry. It says more than half the fatalities have been women and children, but doesn’t say how many of the dead were fighters. Israel says it has killed more than 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The offensive has caused widespread destruction and hunger and driven around 90% of the population of 2.3 million from their homes. Hundreds of thousands are packed into squalid camps along the coast, with little protection from the cold, wet winter. Also Thursday, people mourned eight Palestinians killed by Israeli military operations in and around Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The Israeli military said it opened fire after militants attacked soldiers, and it was aware of uninvolved civilians who were harmed in the raid. Shurafa reported from Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip. Associated Press writers Edith M. Lederer at the United Nations and Nasser Karimi in Tehran, Iran, contributed to this report. A previous version of this story was corrected to show that the name of the local news outlet is Al-Quds Today, not the Quds News Network. xbet casino Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii could be available to play against Ireland on Saturday after the Wallabies’ medical staff ruled out any structural damage to his wrist after the Test rookie appeared to injure it in Sunday’s 14-point defeat against Scotland. Suaalii hurt his right wrist after tackling Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu with only 30 minutes gone in the game. The centre immediately left the field after losing function in his arm and experiencing severe pain but is recovering well enough to take part in training this week in Dublin ahead of the Wallabies’ final Test of the year. Suaalii was only starting his second game for the Wallabies, after his impressive debut against England and an 18-minute appearance off the bench against Wales. The early loss of Suaalii made life even more difficult for the Wallabies, with three tries conceded in his absence. Second-rower Jeremy Williams is also available for selection for the Wallabies against Ireland after illness ruled him out of the matchday squad just before kick-off against Scotland. Williams’ return is timely given Will Skelton has returned to his club La Rochelle in France, due to the Ireland Test falling outside World Rugby’s designated international window. The Wallabies are the chosen opponents for the Irish Rugby Football Union’s 150th-anniversary celebrations and will hope for an improved performance after being so clinically dispatched in Edinburgh. Wallabies prop Allan Alaalatoa revealed the team’s bitter disappointment after the game in Edinburgh at losing the opportunity of playing for a Grand Slam on Saturday. “The feeling in there was tough, like no one said a word, you could see the body language of the boys straight after the game,” Alaalatoa said. “Because there was real belief, that we could win the Grand Slam and that came through the way that we prepared throughout the whole year and the way that the whole squad has contributed. “So that’s footy I guess, and it wasn’t our night ... so we push on to the next goal, which is to beat Ireland in Dublin.” Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii on the ground after getting injured. Alaalatoa experienced not only the frustration of the team’s disciplinary errors, but also the failure of their defensive system, after the team missed 34 tackles. “Especially around that first half, it was probably just the quality of our tackle, just finishing off those tackles ... our discipline, which are things that we can control,” Alaalatoa said. “So that’s the message for us as leaders, and through the coaches as well, that the momentum we gave them was through things that we can control.” Like the Wallabies, Ireland have two victories and one defeat in November, winning against Fiji and Argentina and losing to New Zealand. Alaalatoa is aware of the scale of the challenge in Dublin, but is motivated by upsetting the form book. “(It’s) very important, Ireland obviously have been number one in the world for a while now, or number one and number two, and they’ve been a quality side for years, so we know how important this is, but I think more so for ourselves as well,” Alaalatoa said. “To come away three (wins) and one (defeat) will be awesome for our group. So, yeah, the boys are well aware of the challenge ahead, off the back of a short turn around. I’m sure the boys will prepare really well for it.” News, results and expert analysis from the weekend of sport sent every Monday. Sign up for our Sport newsletter .

NoneCalvert Hall football coach Josh Ward steps downFormer Rep Matt Gaetz might be up to succeed Ron DeSantis as Florida's governor. The 42-year-old earlier this week withdrew his bid to become President-elect Donald Trump's attorney general and said that he will not be running for Congress next year. He awaits an ethics committee's report on sex trafficking and drug use allegations against him. In a tweet on Saturday, Florida State Rep Anthony Sabatini revealed his prediction that Gaetz would be the next Florida governor. The former congressman responded to the post with a gif of the Florida state flag. The post on X, platform formerly known as Twitter, came days after Matt Gaetz resigned from Congress after Trump tapped him for AG. Read More: Donald Trump Has No Plans To Remove Trans Troops From Military: Official However, his bid came to an end after several Republican lawmakers raised concerns about the sex-trafficking investigation against him. The DOJ declined to pursue charges against the 42-year-old last year, but the House Ethics Committee is still probing the allegations. Gaetz has denied wrongdoing. "While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition," Gaetz wrote on X on Thursday. Trump responded on Truth Social, saying he appreciates the former congressman's efforts. Jamiya Neal finished with 19 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and four blocks to lead host Creighton over UNLV 83-65 on Saturday in Omaha, Neb. Creighton was without star Pop Isaacs, who was ruled out for the season on Saturday morning after undergoing surprise hip surgery. It was a startling turn, considering Isaacs led Creighton with 27 points in Wednesday's win over No. 1 Kansas. Neal and Steven Ashworth (17 points) anchored the backcourt in Isaacs' absence, combining to make 13-of-20 shots from the field. Neal made 7 of his 10 and Ashworth 6 of 10. Isaac Traudt also stepped up, making five 3-pointers off the bench to account for all 15 of his points. Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 12 points, making 4-of-5 attempts from the field, and added six rebounds. Creighton opened the second half on a 10-0 run, extending its lead to 49-27 before UNLV mustered an answer. Creighton made 10 consecutive shots early in the second half, extending its lead to a 62-41 with 12:20 remaining. Dedan Thomas Jr. paced UNLV with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting, making 1 of 4 attempts from 3-point range. Jailen Bedford added a team-high 20 points for the Rebels on 8-of-15 shooting, scoring 17 points in the second half. Julian Rishwain added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, but UNLV's second leading scorer for the season, Jeremiah Cherry, was limited to just four points in 16 minutes after early foul trouble. Creighton shot a resounding 63.3 percent from the field for the game, including going 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. Creighton outscored UNLV 38-34 in the paint and outrebounded them 34-21. UNLV finished the game shooting 42.2 percent field, making 7-of-21 attempts from distance. --Field Level MediaSeventeen years ago, JT Skurtovich defied the odds, born at just 26 weeks and given only 10 days to live. Get updates and player profiles ahead of Friday's high school games, plus a recap Saturday with stories, photos, video Frequency: Seasonal Twice a weekArizona junior tight end Keyan Burnett is entering the transfer portal, he announced on his social media accounts Saturday afternoon. Burnett will enter the transfer portal after three seasons at Arizona. Burnett entered the portal in January after the UA hired head coach Brent Brennan, but withdrew his name. Burnett signed with Arizona as a four-star prospect in 2022 out of Servite High School in Anaheim, California. The 6-6, 248-pound Burnett was one of four Servite players to sign with Arizona in '22, along with wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, quarterback Noah Fifita and linebacker Jacob Manu. Burnett is the son of former Arizona linebacker and "Desert Swarm" member Chester Burnett, who was a Second-Team All-Pac-10 selection in 1996. Arizona tight end Keyan Burnett (88) looks up field for room to run after making a catch over the middle against Texas Tech in the third quarter. The younger Burnett played his first two seasons behind Tanner McLachlan, who was Arizona's most productive tight end since Rob Gronkowski. After McLachlan went on to play in the NFL, Burnett had a productive spring and fall training camp and appeared due for a breakout junior season, but injuries hindered Burnett throughout the season. In eight games this season, Burnett had a career-high 18 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown. His only touchdown as a Wildcat was the 35-yard dagger score in Arizona's upset win over 10th-ranked Utah in Salt Lake City. Burnett joins offensive lineman Wendell Moe, quarterback Brayden Dorman, tight end Dorian Thomas, running back Rayshon Luke, wide receiver AJ Jones and running back Brandon Johnson as players entering the transfer portal. Morgan Rogers looked to have given Emery’s side another famous win when he slammed a loose ball home in stoppage time, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano ruled Diego Carlos to have fouled Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and the goal was chalked off. Contact seemed minimal but VAR did not intervene and Villa had to settle for a point in a 0-0 draw. “With the last action, it is the interpretation of the referee,” the Spaniard said. “In England, 80 per cent of those is given a goal and it’s not a foul. It’s very soft. “But in Europe, it could be a foul. We have to accept. “Everybody will know, in England the interpretation is different. The England referees, when actions like that the interpretation is a clear no foul but in Europe that interpretation is different. “They have to be working to get the same decision when some action like that is coming. I don’t know exactly why but we knew before in the Premier League that it is different. A very controversial finish at Villa Park 😲 Morgan Rogers' late goal is ruled out for a foul on Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and the match ends 0-0 ❌ 📺 & — Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) “In Europe for example we are not doing a block like in England and we are not doing in front of the goalkeeper in offensive corners the same situations like in England. “When the action happened, I was thinking here in Europe it’s a foul. In England not, but in Europe I have to accept it. “At first, I thought the referee gave us a goal. In cases like that, it’s confusing because he has to wait for VAR. I don’t know what happened but I think so (the referee changed his mind with VAR).” It was a disappointment for Villa, who remain unbeaten at home in their debut Champions League campaign and are still in contention to qualify automatically for the last 16. “We were playing a favourite to be in the top eight and usually a contender to win this competition,” Emery added. “We are a team who for a long time didn’t play in Europe and the Champions League and this year is very important. “We wanted to play competitive and we are in the right way. Today to get one point is very good, we wanted to win but wanted to avoid some mistakes we made in previous games. “We have 10 points and we’re happy.” Before the game Emery called Juventus one of the “best teams in the world, historically and now”, but this was an Italian side down to the bare bones. Only 14 outfield players made the trip from Turin, with striker Dusan Vlahovic among those who stayed behind. Juve boss Thiago Motta, whose side are 19th but still in contention to reach the top eight, said: “There’s just three games left to qualify. The next home against Man City, then Brugge, then Benfica. “One at a time, as we always did with the goal to qualify for the next round. “In the end we will try and reach our goal which is to go to the next round.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Ethics Committee's long-awaited report on Matt Gaetz documents a trove of salacious allegations , including sex with an underage girl, that tanked the Florida Republican's bid to lead the Justice Department . Citing text messages, travel receipts, online payments and testimony, the bipartisan committee paints a picture of a lifestyle in which Gaetz and others connected with younger women for drug-fueled parties, events or trips, with the expectation the women would be paid for their participation. The former congressman, who filed a last-minute lawsuit to try to block the report's release on Monday, slammed the committee's findings. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and has insisted he never had sex with a minor. And a Justice Department investigation into the allegations ended without any criminal charges filed against him. “Giving funds to someone you are dating — that they didn’t ask for — and that isn’t ‘charged’ for sex is now prostitution?!?” Gaetz wrote in one post on Monday. “There is a reason they did this to me in a Christmas Eve-Eve report and not in a courtroom of any kind where I could present evidence and challenge witnesses.” Here's a look at some of the committee's key findings: The committee found that between 2017 and 2020, Gaetz paid tens of thousands of dollars to women "likely in connection with sexual activity and/or drug use.” He paid the women using through online services such as PayPal, Venmo, and CashApp and with cash or check, the committee said. The committee said it found evidence that Gaetz understood the “transactional nature” of his relationships with the women. The report points to one text exchange in which Gaetz balked at a woman’s request that he send her money, “claiming she only gave him a ‘drive by.’” Women interviewed by the committee said there was a “general expectation of sex,” the report said. One woman who received more than $5,000 from Gaetz between 2018 and 2019 said that “99 percent of the time” that when she hung out with Gaetz “there was sex involved.” However, Gaetz was in a long-term relationship with one of the women he paid, so “some of the payments may have been of a legitimate nature," the committee said. Text messages obtained by the committee also show that Gaetz would ask the women to bring drugs to their “rendezvous,” the report said. While most of his encounters with the women were in Florida, the committee said Gaetz also traveled “on several occasions” with women whom he paid for sex. The report includes text message exchanges in which Gaetz appears to be inviting various women to events, getaways or parties, and arranging airplane travel and lodging. Gaetz associate Joel Greenberg, who pleaded guilty to sex trafficking charges in 2021, initially connected with women through an online service. In one text with a 20-year-old woman, Greenberg suggested if she has a friend, the four of them could meet up. The woman responded that she usually does “$400 per meet.” Greenberg replied: “He understands the deal,” along with a smiley face emoji. Greenberg asks if they are old enough to drink alcohol, and sent the woman a picture of Gaetz. The woman responded that her friend found him “really cute.” “Well, he's down here for only for the day, we work hard and play hard," Greenberg replied. The report details a party in July 2017 in which Gaetz is accused of having sex with “multiple women, including the 17-year-old, for which they were paid.” The committee pointed to “credible testimony” from the now-woman herself as well as “multiple individuals" who corroborated the allegation. The then-17-year-old — who had just completed her junior year in high school — told the committee that Gaetz paid her $400 in cash that night, “which she understood to be payment for sex,” according to the report. The woman acknowledged that she had taken ecstasy the night of the party, but told the committee that she was “certain” of her sexual encounters with the then-congressman. There's no evidence that Gaetz knew she was a minor when he had sex with her, the committee said. The woman told the committee she didn't tell Gaetz she was under 18 at the time and that he didn't how old she was. Rather, the committee said Gaetz learned she was a minor more than a month after the party. But he stayed in touch with her after that and met up with her for “commercial sex” again less than six months after she turned 18, according to the committee. In sum, the committee said it authorized 29 subpoenas for documents and testimony, reviewed nearly 14,000 documents and contacted more than two dozen witnesses. But when the committee subpoenaed Gaetz for his testimony, he failed to comply. "Gaetz pointed to evidence that would ‘exonerate’ him yet failed to produce any such materials," the committee said. Gaetz “continuously sought to deflect, deter, or mislead the Committee in order to prevent his actions from being exposed.” The report details a months-long process that dragged into a year as it sought information from Gaetz that he decried as “nosey” and a “weaponization” of government against him. In one notable exchange, investigators were seeking information about the expenses for a 2018 get-away with multiple women to the Bahamas. Gaetz ultimately offered up his plane ticket receipt “to” the destination, but declined to share his return “from” the Bahamas. The report said his return on a private plane and other expenses paid by an associate were in violation of House gift rules. In another Gaetz told the committee he would “welcome” the opportunity to respond to written questions. Yet, after it sent a list of 16 questions, Gaetz said publicly he would “no longer” voluntarily cooperate. He called the investigation “frivolous,” adding: “Every investigation into me ends the same way: my exoneration.” The report said that while Gaetz’s obstruction of the investigation does not rise to a criminal violation it is inconsistent with the requirement that all members of Congress “act in a manner that reflects creditably upon the House.” The committee began its review of Gaetz in April 2021 and deferred its work in response to a Justice Department request. It renewed its work shortly after Gaetz announced that the Justice Department had ended a sex trafficking investigation without filing any charges against him. The committee sought records from the Justice Department about the probe, but the agency refused, saying it doesn’t disclose information about investigations that don’t result in charges. The committee then subpoenaed the Justice Department, but after a back-and-forth between officials and the committee, the department handed over “publicly reported information about the testimony of a deceased individual,” according to the report. “To date, DOJ has provided no meaningful evidence or information to the Committee or cited any lawful basis for its responses,” the committee said. Many of the women who the committee spoke to had already given statements to the Justice Department and didn't want to “relive their experience,” the committee said. “They were particularly concerned with providing additional testimony about a sitting congressman in light of DOJ’s lack of action on their prior testimony,” the report said. The Justice Department, however, never handed over the women's statements. The agency's lack of cooperation — along with its request that the committee pause its investigation — significantly delayed the committee's probe, lawmakers said.Western intelligence agencies accuse Russia of increasingly engaging in hybrid warfare since invading Ukraine. What exactly constitutes hybrid warfare, and what's its intended goal? In the span of one week, a cargo plane belonging to German logistics company DHL crashed in Lithuania , two underwater data cables were damaged in the Baltic Sea, and pro-Russian right-wing extremist Calin Georgescu surprisingly won the first round of Romania's presidential election. Several Western politicians and intelligence agencies suspect that Russia was the driving force behind all three incidents, although nothing has been proven and no evidence backing the suspicions has so far been made public. While Kremlin-orchestrated hybrid warfare has always posed a danger, experts now warn that this danger has grown dramatically since Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine . Hybrid warfare means broadening military operations to include espionage, sabotage and cyberattacks, as well as engaging in election interference, propaganda or disinformation campaigns to weaken and destabilize the enemy from within. Experts say Russia has continuously expanded its hybrid warfare arsenal in recent years. Sabotage suspected after Baltic Sea cables cut To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Espionage European countries have expelled around 500 Russian diplomats since early 2022. Britain's MI5 secret service said at least 400 of them are spies. Many Russian embassies and consulates are reported to be equipped with state-of-the-art communications and espionage technology. If any of this can be definitively proven, Western intelligence agencies have chosen not to make public the information they may have gathered. After all, the embassy and consulate buildings are considered Russian territory and cannot be entered by host states without Russian permission. The Dutch secret service has warned that Russia is equipping its spies with false papers and smuggling them into Western institutions disguised as businesspeople. Reports of suspected Russian espionage emerge regularly. Some drew attention to a hacked conversation between German army officials discussing the country's Taurus missile system . Others have dealt with suspected Russian drones spying on European air bases and industrial zones. Some reports have also focused on suspected spy ships, officially classed as research vessels, cruising the seas of northern Europe and mapping critical seabed infrastructure for possible acts of sabotage. Sabotage Last week, a Russian-captained Chinese freighter reportedly damaged two undersea cables by dragging an anchor over the seabed . The incident is similar to one that occurred in October 2023. Last month, a London warehouse used for storing aid for Ukraine was hit by an arson attack . In July, a parcel that should have been sent by air freight went up in flames at a DHL logistics center in Leipzig, Germany. It is thought Russian sabotage could have been at play in these and numerous other cases. Yet nothing has been proven so far. European intelligence services warn that the number of acts of sabotage and arson have increased dramatically over the past year in the EU and UK. Cyberattacks Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) warns that the risk of malicious cyberspace activity is "higher than ever." Online espionage and sabotage are ever-present. "Before Russia's attack on Ukraine, Russian-linked groups were very active in Germany engaging in cyberespionage and financially motivated ransomware attacks," the BSI said. "The scope of threats has expanded since Russia launched its war of aggression against Ukraine." The agency said "the number of DDoS attacks by pro-Russian hacktivists" has risen sharply. DDoS attacks involve flooding websites or servers with traffic until they crash due to overload. Hacks aimed at penetrating company and institutional networks are also on the rise. Disinformation and propaganda Another objective of hybrid warfare is trying to influence public opinion in a given target country. Falsehoods and pro-Russian or anti-Ukrainian narratives are disseminated to this end, whether on social media platforms through troll factories, or via Russian foreign media outlets. In early 2024, Germany's Foreign Ministry uncovered a Russian "Doppelganger" disinformation campaign. It involved 50,000 fake social media user accounts spreading falsehoods and pro-Russian opinions on social networks while linking to fake news outlets spreading Russian propaganda. Some of the sites appeared deceptively similar to well-known news sites. Election interference, meddling in the political process One of the aims of these disinformation campaigns is to undermine public support for Ukraine. Another objective consists of politically destabilizing a democratic target country by strengthening extreme parties and candidates, for example by providing financial support to them. Russian propaganda: Deepfake videos tougher to detect To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video In April, the Czech secret service uncovered a propaganda website called Voice of Europe , believed to be financed by Moscow. The site is suspected of paying bribes to some members of European Parliament. One of the individuals suspected of having received such payments is Petr Bystron , an MEP with the far-right populist Alternative for Germany ( AfD ) party. He has denied the accusations. Western intelligence agencies also accused Russia of directly or indirectly influencing dozens of elections across Europe, North America and South America. Russian international broadcaster RT is said to have produced videos on controversial topics such as aid for Ukraine, migration and the economy during the US presidential election campaign. Right-wing US bloggers then spread some of the videos. Hack-and-leak attacks are also part of the hybrid warfare repertoire. They involve hacking politicians, political parties or other institutions to steal and publish confidential information, sometimes alongside falsified documents, before elections. This happened, for example, in the run-up to the 2016 US election and the 2017 French presidential election. Targeted killings Assassinating influential figures is another facet of hybrid warfare. Russian President Vladimir Putin has not shied away from attacking individuals abroad . This is clear from the killing of a Chechen ex-commander in Berlin's Tiergarten park, who allegedly fought against Russia during the Second Chechen War. This is also evident from the 2006 attack on Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko and the assassination attempt against Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in 2018 . All were carried out on British soil. It's mainly Russian citizens who have fallen victim to such attacks so far. In July 2024, however, news leaked that Russia was planning to assassinate Armin Papperger , CEO of the German armaments group Rheinmetall, which manufactures the Leopard II tanks and other munitions supplied to Ukraine. The Kremlin has denied all the accusations. How to deal with hybrid warfare? Russia is conducting many different hybrid warfare pinpricks across Europe, according to Sönke Marahrens, a German army officer and hybrid security expert. "Russian operators are trying out different things in many European states, which are individually tailored to the respective state," Marahrens told German public news outlet tagesschau.de. "Hybrid measures that work in Poland don't work in Germany; what works in Germany wouldn't work in Finland." That is why, he said, one must expect "a very broad spectrum of attacks in the future." Likewise, one should show flexibility in reacting to such attacks, he added. This article was translated from German .Serie A | Lazio 3-0 Bologna: Zaccagni pounces after Pobega madness

US sex-abuse watchdog fires investigator after learning of his arrest for stealing drug money DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Center for SafeSport abruptly fired one of its investigators last month after learning he’d been arrested for stealing money confiscated after a drug bust he was part of during his previous job as a police officer. Jason Krasley left his job with the Allentown Police Department in Pennsylvania in 2021 and was hired by the Denver-based SafeSport center to look into sensitive cases involving sex abuse and harassment. The center said it conducts multiple interviews and a “comprehensive background check” of potential employees. The center said it was looking into cases Krasley handled to make sure they were dealt with appropriately. Jim Larrañaga steps down at Miami, Bill Courtney takes over to finish season CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Jim Larrañaga has stepped down as Miami’s men’s basketball coach effective immediately. Pat Riley says the Miami Heat will not trade Jimmy Butler ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — If Jimmy Butler wants a trade, the Miami Heat have no plans to make him happy. Heat President Pat Riley — in a rare move — spoke out to address rumors Thursday, saying the team has no plans to trade Butler. It’s a clear sign that, if necessary, the team will be willing to let Butler leave as a free agent and get nothing in return. Riley says in a release distributed by the team "we usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches.” Haaland penalty failure and Fernandes red card pile on woes for City and United in Premier League Erling Haaland’s failure from the penalty spot and Bruno Fernandes’ latest red card have compounded the woes of Manchester City and Manchester United on another tough day for the two Premier League giants. City dropped more points in its improbably poor run of form by drawing 1-1 at home to Everton. Haaland had a spot kick saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 53rd minute. The four-time defending champions have only won one of its last 13 games in all competitions. While City is languishing in seventh place, United is even further adrift in 14th place after a 2-0 loss at lowly Wolverhampton. Fernandes was sent off in the 47th. It comes after the NHS yesterday told families to look out for dementia symptoms in relatives this Christmas, encouraging anyone with health concerns to come forward as soon as possible. Dr Jeremy Isaacs, NHS England National Clinical Director for Dementia said: “Dementia often develops slowly and might not be apparent during a brief interaction, but with family and friends gathering at Christmas perhaps for the first time in months, there is a chance to spot the signs of this condition.” Here, Vanessa Chalmers and Lucy Gornall reveal the red flags for dementia and five other big killers you can act on now for a healthier 2025. DEMENTIA SIGNS IN YOUR LOVED ONE IT’S very common for family members to spot red flags of undiagnosed dementia before the person themselves. According to Katie Puckering, information services manager for Alzheimer’s Research UK, early signs of the condition “might be getting family members’ names mixed up or getting disorientated around someone else’s home, for example, not being able to find the main living room after using the bathroom.” 7 It's very common for family members to spot red flags of undiagnosed dementia before the person themselves Credit: Getty Changes in the daily routine can also be confusing. Katie explains: “Sitting down for a big family meal at 3pm can be disorientating in the early stages of dementia.” Early dementia causes a person to repeat themselves or struggle to follow the conversation topic. There is also a way to pick up on changes in the Christmas cards you receive from family members. “You might notice their handwriting is shaky or the words are jumbled,” says Katie. “If anyone is concerned about someone, the best thing to do is to speak with them honestly and openly about what they’re noticing.” SIGNS IN YOURSELF MEMORY blips here and there are a normal part of ageing which might become more apparent from one year to the next. Fran Vandelli, a dementia expert at Bupa Care Services, says: “If you can remember what you are trying to recall but it just takes a little longer, it is not usually anything to worry about. “However, if you are struggling to remember recent events, conversations or where you have put things, you might be worried. “It is important to look out for other signs too, like getting lost in familiar places, struggling to follow conversations, having difficulties speaking and understanding and getting easily confused over everyday tasks like cooking, housework or driving the car.” 2. DIABETES SIGNS IN YOUR LOVED ONE DIABETES is when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the insulin that is produced does not work properly, to regulate blood sugars. A change in levels of activity and indulging more may set blood sugar levels on a rollercoaster at Christmas. 7 Diabetes is when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the insulin that is produced does not work properly, to regulate blood sugars Credit: Getty Natasha Marsland, a senior clinical advisor at Diabetes UK, says: “There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 and 2. There are four key symptoms for type 1 diabetes to look out for that we call the 4Ts – toilet, thirsty, tired, thinner.” Is your partner going to the toilet unusually frequently, waking you up at night to do so? Perhaps they have lost weight and are looking thinner than usual, despite the time of year, or napping during the day. Type 2 diabetes causes these symptoms, too, plus a fruity or sweet-smelling breath. But many of the symptoms may be more noticeable to yourself. SIGNS IN YOURSELF THERE are many high-salt foods at Christmas but, if you cannot shift your thirst and are peeing more often, it could also be a sign of undiagnosed diabetes. The last thing you need when cooped up for three days is genital itching. But this, alongside wounds that won’t heal and blurry vision, are warning signs of type 2. Natasha says: “Type 2 diabetes can be easier to miss than type 1 diabetes because the symptoms may not be so obvious. Ask your GP for a blood test because the longer type 2 diabetes remains undiagnosed, the greater the risk of long-term complications.” Skin changes can also happen if blood sugars have not been controlled for a long time. Dr Tony Fincham, a GP at Benenden Hospital, says: “In women, a skin breakout may be related to the menstrual cycle. However, if this is a new symptom, there is a chance it could be a sign of type 1 diabetes.” 3. PARKINSON’S DISEASE SIGNS IN YOUR LOVED ONE HAVE you noticed a change in your love life? Duncan Reid, of Pharmacy2U, says: “Parkinson’s disease can affect many aspects of a person’s life, including their sex life. 7 The most obvious sign of Parkinson's is shaking, especially when using your hands Credit: Alamy “Reduced libido or sexual desire can be linked to changes in dopamine levels, involved in motor control and feelings of pleasure. “Men with Parkinson’s might face erectile dysfunction, while women can experience vaginal dryness, and both may have difficulty achieving orgasm. Other symptoms include muscle stiffness or reduced mobility, which may make intimacy physically challenging.” A change in mood, such as new anxiety or depression, may also be signs of Parkinson’s. But the most obvious sign is shaking, especially when using your hands. It is typical for older relatives to be a bit “doddery”, but have you noticed they are particularly off balance, or had a fall recently? This, along with drooling or excessive sweating, are signs of Parkinson’s. SIGNS IN YOURSELF STRUGGLING with writing, buttoning a shirt or pressing phone buttons may also become apparent with a tremor. And if you realise that you are not picking up on all the lovely festive smells, it might be time to get checked, too. Duncan says: “One early sign of Parkinson’s is a loss or reduction in your sense of smell, which might make it harder to notice the aroma of Christmas cooking or mulled wine. “Called hyposmia, it is often overlooked but can appear years before other Parkinson’s symptoms. “Another sign is difficulty swallowing, which might make enjoying festive meals challenging. “This can manifest as coughing or choking while eating, or a sensation that food is stuck in your throat.” 4. BOWEL CANCER SIGNS IN YOUR LOVED ONE SURPRISED at how little your dad, mum or grandparent has eaten at Christmas lunch? A loss of appetite could be a sign of cancer, including bowel cancer . 7 A loss of appetite could be a sign of cancer, including bowel cancer Credit: Getty Kiran Jones, a clinical pharmacist at Oxford Online Pharmacy, says: “A constant feeling of fullness can occur if there’s a blockage or tumour in the bowel. “Sharp or ongoing abdominal pain is something to take seriously.” If the pain feels localised to one area and doesn’t ease off after food has digested, it is a concern – and Kiran warns “don’t delay” until the new year to address it. “Bowel cancer can cause anaemia, as blood loss in the bowel reduces the number of red blood cells in your body, leading to exhaustion,” he adds. Difficulty staying awake or getting involved with Christmas activities, therefore, could be signs, along with shortness of breath and headaches. SIGNS IN YOURSELF ONLY you will see what is in the toilet bowl and it is important to check. Signs of bowel cancer include blood in stools – including on toilet paper – and changes in stools such as diarrhoea or constipation. Bowel habits commonly change at Christmas, given the indulgences. But Kiran says: “If these symptoms continue well after the festive feast, it might be time to seek medical advice.” Continuous bloating, especially if it gets progressively worse, is also a sign of bowel cancer, as well as stomach or ovarian cancers. Kiran says: “Bloating shouldn’t last for longer than a few hours after you’ve finished your Christmas dinner and, if it lasts longer than a few days, it can indicate gut health issues, or worse, bowel cancer, and should be checked out.” 5. ADDICTION SIGNS IN YOUR LOVED ONE DO you have a family member who is suddenly much more argumentative this Christmas? Frequent rows and fights or neglecting hygiene could be a sign of alcoholism. 7 Lester Morse said: 'Loved ones may notice that their family member is less social or secretive about how time is spent' Credit: Getty Lester Morse, Rehabs UK founder and director says: “The behavioural changes that result from addiction are often the first signs of a problem that loved ones notice. The individual will seek out and use drugs or alcohol even when the substance use negatively impacts health, relationships, and daily functioning.” The normalisation of heavy drinking makes it harder to spot signs of alcoholism . Besides, people with a problem often drink in secret. Lester says: “Loved ones may notice that their family member is less social or secretive about how time is spent. “New friends may appear in their life, with little explanation as to how they met.” Avoid confronting the issue when your relative is drunk, when they are more likely to deny or justify their use. Lester adds: “Talk about the effect their drinking has on whatever the person cares about most, such as career or children. They may not be concerned about their own situation.” SIGNS IN YOURSELF IF you are wondering whether your own drinking has crossed the line, Lester says: “Consider whether alcohol is costing you more than money. “Your drinking may have started to edge out activities that you used to enjoy. “Similarly, it may be preventing you from keeping up with responsibilities at home, work or school.” If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one, contact your GP or speak to Rehabs UK treatment advisors. 6. HEART PROBLEMS SIGNS IN YOUR LOVED ONE HEART attacks are more common at Christmas time, studies suggest. Emily McGrath, a senior cardiac nurse at British Heart Foundation, explains: “Never ignore chest pain and assume it’s caused by indigestion, especially if it continues over an extended period. 7 Heart attacks are more common at Christmas time, studies suggest Credit: Alamy “Angina feels like pressure, tightness or squeezing in your chest and the pain may feel sharp or like a dull ache. You might also feel it in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach. Heart attack symptoms vary for each person.” They include sudden pain or discomfort in your chest that doesn’t go away. It can spread to your left or right arm, or to your neck, jaw, back or tummy. Emily says: “For some, the pain or tightness is severe, while for others it’s uncomfortable. “It may feel like heaviness or a pain similar to indigestion.” Feeling sick, sweaty, light-headed, anxious or short of breath are also signs to call 999. Swollen feet or ankles can be a sign of coronary heart disease – the leading cause of heart attacks and most commonly diagnosed type of heart disease in the UK. Other symptoms you may spot include sweating or pale, ashen skin. SIGNS IN YOURSELF FEELING short of breath on the dog walk? Emily says: “If you feel short of breath doing every day activities and haven’t experienced this before, it is important to get this checked out. “It may be expected if you are suffering with a respiratory problem such as a cold, but it could also be a sign of something more serious.” Dr Fincham adds: “In older people, feeling dizzy when standing is often a symptom of their medication. If it’s a recent symptom, excluding any new medications, and progresses, then seek medical help.” Read more on the Scottish Sun DECEMBRRR Scots blasted with snowfall days before Christmas as storms cause transport chaos FLOOR PHILLER Rangers boss Philippe Clement spotted dancing in popular Glasgow bar Emily says: “Dizziness, light headedness and palpitations can be signs of an irregular heart rhythm and should not be ignored. “Please do not hesitate to contact 111 or 999.”LOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Snell and the Los Angeles Dodgers have finalized a $182 million, five-year contract. The reigning World Series champions announced the deal with the two-time Cy Young Award winner on Saturday. Snell, who turns 32 on Wednesday, went 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 20 starts for San Francisco this year, throwing a no-hitter at Cincinnati on Aug. 2 for one of only 16 individual shutouts in the major leagues this season. The left-hander struck out 145 and walked 44 in 104 innings. He was sidelined between April 19 and May 22 by a strained left adductor and between June 2 and July 9 by a strained left groin. Snell gets a $52 million signing bonus , payable on Jan. 20, and annual salaries of $26 million, of which $13 million each year will be deferred. Because Snell is a Washington state resident, the signing bonus will not be subject to California income tax. Snell joins Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto atop Los Angeles’ rotation. Ohtani didn’t pitch this year while recovering from right elbow surgery but the two-way star is expected back on the mound in 2025. Snell won Cy Young Awards in 2018 with Tampa Bay and 2023 with San Diego. He is 76-58 with a 3.19 ERA in nine seasons with the Rays (2016-20), Padres (2021-23) and Giants. Because he turned down a qualifying offer from San Diego last November, the Giants were not eligible to give Snell another one and won’t receive draft-pick compensation. Reports Third Quarter of Fiscal Year 2025 Financial ResultsImagion Biosystems to use funds from $3m capital raise to advance MagSense platform technology Through MagSense, Imagion aims to revolutionise cancer diagnosis by introducing molecular imaging to MRI The company is pursuing initial indication in HER2+ breast cancer staging, with pipeline candidates for prostate and ovarian cancers Special Report: Imagion Biosystems will use funds from its recent $3m capital raising to advance its revolutionary cancer-diagnosis MagSense platform towards commercialisation. Imagion Biosystems’ (ASX:IBX) chief business officer Ward Detwiler said IBX’s proceeds from the capital raise would help achieve key milestones in 2025, including prioritising phase II clinical studies of MagSense in its first indication of HER2+ breast cancer and advancing two additional pipeline products in prostate and ovarian cancers. It’s a well-known fact, backed up by the World Health Organization , that cancer is a leading cause of death globally. However, cancer mortality is reduced when cases are detected and treated early including through early diagnosis and screening programs. Detwiler said MagSense improved on current techniques for cancer diagnosis such as X-Rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasounds and positron emission tomography (PET) by providing a more specific and personalised approach. The MagSense imaging platform involves the use of iron oxide nanoparticles labelled with cancer-specific targeting antibodies, which can then be imaged with the widely available MRI. Imagion’s lead imaging agent is targeting diagnosis of metastatic HER2+ breast cancer, a form cancer known to be highly aggressive. “This study not only advances us one step closer to bringing MagSense to a large patient population in need, but also acts as a proof of concept which allows us to address a range of other cancers.” Positive phase I study The company has completed a phase I study (IBI010103), involving 13 HER2+ breast cancer patients at four Australian sites. The results of that study were released in December 2023, which included: The molecularly targeted MRI contrast agent MSH2IA (MagSense HER2 Imaging agent) was safe and well tolerated, with no adverse or serious adverse events An independent panel of radiologists confirmed the detectable magnetic signature The MagSense imaging agent could potentially reduce the need for lymph node biopsies With funding secured, Imagion will progress with an investigational new drug application to the US FDA for a multi-site phase II study for HER2+ breast cancer in mid-2025. “We are bringing something that is so much more powerful than the current standard of care allowing more accurate and timely patient diagnosis leading to personalised and appropriate treatments,” Ward said. Could replace need for biopsy Imagion’s newly appointed medical advisor Dr Susan Harvey, a breast imaging radiologist by training, said breast cancer was typically diagnosed using ultrasound, mammography and biopsy. Harvey recently retired as vice president of medical affairs at Hologic, a world-leader in mammography and women’s health. She previously served as director of breast imaging at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and is co-founder of the non-profit organisation Cure Women’s Cancer . Harvey said these tools are effective, yet not specific, so false positives and false negatives occur. “MagSense brings precision and specificity to breast cancer imaging,” she said. “The technology has the promise of fewer false alarms and fewer overlooked cancers. “Like a pregnancy test that is pink or blue, the MagSense technology could provide an accurate yes or no answer to MRI as to whether cancer is present, and thereby enable a more personalised treatment the woman will receive. “This innovative tool will transform cancer detection and care, starting with HER2+ breast cancer.” Potential to target other cancers Following the capital raise, the company will be ready to recommence the MagSense platform for clinical development in HER2+ breast cancer, and advance other pipeline programs for prostate and ovarian cancers. “The underlying technology is extendable to any type of cancer for which we have a targeting ligand,” said Detwiler. “We already have products in the pipeline for HER2+ breast, prostate and ovarian cancers, representing over 7 million patients per year in the US market alone. Detwiler said expanding to other types of cancer, such as pancreatic, lung, or any other cancer with a known biomarker could follow the same clinical development pathway. “This will fundamentally change how MRI is used in cancer detection, expanding access and improving outcomes for millions of patients globally,” he said. I was happy to take a break from the market gyrations and spend time with family and friends. It is strange to say that we are now at the end of 2024. And anytime we reach the end of the year, it’s always a good idea to do a little portfolio housekeeping. The reality is the market should do well in the New Year, aided by the “January Effect.” The January effect happens when folks pour new funds into the market. Whether it’s a bonus from work or a New Year’s resolution, it’s a phenomenon that happens year after year. But perhaps the biggest contributor is simply the fact that large fund managers tend to rebalance their portfolios at the beginning of the year. They all have performance benchmarks they want to meet in the New Year, so they tend to load up on top performers when they rebalance. What’s interesting about the January effect is that it’s more noticeable with small-cap stocks. What’s more, not every January effect is the same. Still, while not every year is the same, stock prices do tend to rise in the first month of the new year. This means it’s even more important now that your portfolio is positioned to benefit from the potential future strength. And that’s where my Stock Grader (subscription required) can help. Each week, my system interprets reams of financial data and outputs those results in easy-to-interpret letter grades. And in today’s Market 360 , I want to share 10 stocks you should consider selling before we open the books on 2025. Stock Grader recently flagged all these stocks as very weak. Take a look below; some of these names might surprise you... Each company on this list received a “D” or an “F” rating in my Stock Grader. So, as we come up on the New Year, it is critical to dump stocks like this from your portfolio. If you want to make real money in the markets, you likely won’t do so with any of the stocks I listed above. The truth is that next year it will be every stock for itself, which means that companies with strong fundamentals and earnings growth should emerge as the market winners... So, I encourage you to use the final trading days of 2024 to ensure that your personal portfolios are fully invested in fundamentally superior stocks . Now, if you’re not sure where to find fundamentally superior stocks, then look no further than my Growth Investor service. In this particular service, I have two Buy Lists: High-Growth Investments and Elite Dividend Payers. And both of these Growth Investor Buy Lists are chock-full of fundamentally superior stocks. In fact, looking back at 2024, my High-Growth Investments list jumped 37%, and my Elite Dividend Payers grew around 23%, as I write this. This compares to the S&P 500’s 24% gain, the Dow’s 14% jump and the NASDAQ’s 30% rise, respectively, as I write this. Clearly, my Buy List stocks are the crème de la crème. So, if you want to make sure your portfolio is filled with the crème de la crème, fundamentally superior stocks, then join me at Growth Investor today . You’ll receive instant access to all my Buy List stocks, as well as all my Growth Investor Monthly Issues, Weekly Updates, Special Market Podcasts – and much more. I’ve been around the market for more than four decades now. The fact is that stocks tend to have seasonal cycles throughout the year. However, some of the well-known seasonal patterns have more validity than others... That’s why I’m so excited about the latest research from our partners at TradeSmith. You see, their whole mission is to help investors make better decisions backed by rigorous statistical analysis. And it all started with a seemingly impossible mandate from TradeSmith CEO Keith Kaplan. “I want you to look at every stock in the Dow, NASDAQ and S&P 500... and find the optimal day to buy each one.” And after running backtests on more than 2 billion data loops on 5,000 different stocks... dating back to 1991... the end result is a simple tool that can help you know down to the very day when the best time is to buy or sell any given stock. Now, when the New Year rolls around, the folks at TradeSmith are hosting a webinar on the strategy. You can sign up here for it now . But here’s the best part... They’ve set up a website where registrants can run their stock tickers through their tool for free. I encourage you to try it for yourself. This unique tool will display consistent historical patterns coming up that can help you make informed decisions about stocks on your watchlist, stocks you already own, or ones you’re just now exploring. Go here now to register to attend the webinar and get free access to this groundbreaking tool . You don’t want to miss it.

1 2 Lucknow: A microbial biofertiliser , developed by CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, reduces expense of using chemical fertilisers by up to 40% and enhances plant growth by 20 to 25% compared to other fertilisers. "Chemical fertilisers, though they increase crop yields, can affect soil microbial communities negatively. Soil microbial activity is crucial for nutrient availability and crop productivity, hence, we came up with microbial biofertiliser," said Ajit Kumar Shasany, NBRI director. He added that microbial biofertilisers were nutrient-rich biological fertilisers containing microorganisms, such as bacteria, algae and fungi, to promote plant growth. They are a more environment-friendly alternative to chemical fertilisers, which can harm soil and living organisms. Hence, the institute developed stress-tolerant biofertilisers to enhance plant growth, improve soil health and increase crop yield. These products reduce need for chemical fertilisers and pesticides, benefiting environment and farmers. "In last three years (2021-2024), 22.72 lakh packets (200g each; in Rabi and Kharif seasons) of biofertilisers were produced and distributed to UP farmers through state agriculture department, which accounts for more than 9.0 lakh acres of land coverage for different legumes and cereal crops," said Shasany, adding that results of NBRI's biofertilisers were overwhelming, benefiting farmers and society. "The technology developed by NBRI has advantages over competitors due to its focus on understanding the relationship between microbes, plants and environmental stresses. These biofertilisers are compatible with sustainable agricultural practices and can be used alongside chemical fertilisers," said NBRI senior principal scientist Puneet Singh Chauhan. He said field trials showed effectiveness and cost-efficiency compared to commercial products. "It eliminates expense and use of chemical fertiliser by 40% and boosts plant growth by 25%. We conducted trials in Odisha and 90% farmers were happy with the results and opted for it. These biofertilisers were successfully used for a wide range of crops, including cereals, pulses, oilseeds and horticultural crops.

By PETER SMITH A social-media tribute to Coptic Christians. A billboard in Amish country. A visit to a revered Jewish gravesite. While Donald Trump’s lock on the white evangelical vote is legendary, he and his campaign allies also wooed smaller religious groups, far from the mainstream. As it turned out, Trump won by decisive margins, but his campaign aggressively courted niche communities with the understanding that every vote could be critical, particularly in swing states. Voter surveys such as exit polls, which canvass broad swaths of the electorate, aren’t able to gauge the impact of such microtargeting, but some backers say the effort was worth it. Just one week before the election, Trump directed a post on the social-media platform X to Coptic Christians in the United States —- whose church has ancient roots in Egypt. He saluted their “Steadfast Faith in God, Perseverance through Centuries of Persecution and Love for this Great Country.” “This was the first time seeing a major U.S. presidential candidate address the community in this manner,” said Mariam Wahba, a Coptic Christian and research analyst with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington-based research institute. “It was really a profound moment.” She said many Copts share the conservative social views of other Christian groups in the Republican constituency, and they may already have been Trump supporters. But the posting reinforced those bonds. Coptic bishops sent the president-elect congratulations after his victory and cited their “shared social and family values.” Some Assyrian Christians — another faith group with Middle Eastern roots — similarly bonded with Trump, whose mispronunciation of “Assyrian” at a rally created a viral video moment and drew attention to their support. Sam Darmo, a Phoenix real estate agent and co-founder of Assyrians for Trump, said many community members cited the economy, illegal immigration and other prominent voter issues. They echoed other conservative Christians’ concerns, he said, on issues such as abortion, gender identity and religious expression in public. But he said Trump supported various Middle Eastern Christians recovering from the Islamic State group’s oppressive rule. Darmo also credited Massad Boulos, father-in-law to Trump’s daughter Tiffany, for mobilizing various Middle Eastern Christian groups, including Chaldean Catholics, and other voters, particularly in Michigan, such as Muslims. “He brought all these minority groups together,” he said. “We’re hoping to continue that relationship.” But members of Middle Eastern-rooted Christian groups, and their politics, are far from monolithic, said Marcus Zacharia, founder of Progressive Copts, a program of Informed Immigrants, an organization that promotes dialogue on sensitive topics among such groups in the United States and Canada. He said many younger community members question Trump’s stances on issues such as immigration, and sense that conservatives sometimes tokenize them by focusing on the plight of persecuted Christians in the Middle East while neglecting wider issues of repression in countries there that the U.S. supports. He said there needs to be more informed dialogue across the political divide in these communities. “There is no more high time than these next four years to have that way of conducting conversations,” he said. Republicans also made an aggressive push for Amish voters , particularly in the swing state of Pennsylvania, where they are most numerous at about 92,000 (many below voting age). The GOP has made similar efforts in the past, even though researchers have found that less than 10% of them typically vote, due to their separatism from society. But Republicans used billboards, mailers, ads and door-to-door campaigner to drive turnout in Lancaster County, home base to the nation’s largest Amish settlement. On Election Day, Amish voters Samuel Stoltzfus and his wife Lillian Stoltzfus said they were supporting Trump, citing their anti-abortion beliefs. “We basically look at it as murder,” Stoltzfus, 31, said outside a polling center in the Lancaster County community of New Holland, where dozens of other members of the local Amish community voted. Trump has wavered on the issue, dismaying some abortion opponents, though many have said Republicans still align more closely to their views. Stolzfus added: “Make America great again and keep the moral values,” he said. “Let’s go back to the roots.” Steven Nolt, a history professor at Elizabethtown College in Lancaster College who studies the Amish and their voting patterns, said that while it’s too early to say definitively without further research, he doesn’t see evidence of a larger turnout this year. Lancaster County as a whole — most of which is not Amish — is a GOP stronghold that Trump won handily, though both parties’ votes edged up from 2020, according to unofficial results posted by the Pennsylvania Department of State. Trump’s biggest increases were in urban or suburban areas with few Amish, while some areas with larger Amish populations generally saw a modest increase in the Trump vote, said Nolt, director of the college’s Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies. “Bottom line, percentage-wise, not much change in the parts of Lancaster County where the Amish live,” he said. Sir Keir Starmer has rejected demands that he make a choice between a trade deal with the US and closer relations with the EU in the wake of the re-election of Donald Trump to the White House . The prime minister has been posed a Brexit conundrum amid fears that Mr Trump’s plans to introduce tariffs and instigate a trade war will force Britain to choose between striking a trade deal with the incoming US president and continuing to pursue closer ties with the EU in a planned reset of Britain’s relationship with the bloc. With Mr Trump also understood to be ready to pull the plug on support for Ukraine , and threatening to withdraw funding for European defence if Nato allies do not pay more money towards it, Sir Keir is also being pushed to pursue closer integration with European allies on defence. But addressing the Lord Mayor’s Banquet at Mansion House, he made it clear that he believes the choice being posed is a false one and that he can achieve closer relationships with both allies. The prime minister told the audience: “I want to be clear at the outset: against the backdrop of these dangerous times, the idea that we must choose between our allies, that somehow we’re with either America or Europe, is plain wrong. I reject it utterly.” Referring to Labour’s part in the establishment of Nato in 1945, he added: “Attlee did not choose between allies. Churchill did not choose. The national interest demands that we work with both.” He went on: “This is not about sentimentality: it is about hard-headed realism. Time and again, the best hope for the world, and the surest way to serve our mutual national interest, has come from our two nations working together. It still does. The fabric of our nations has been woven together so that our prosperity today – our leadership in tech, AI and more – are intertwined.” He also had warm words for the incoming 47th president of the US: “When President Trump graciously hosted me for dinner in Trump Tower, I told him that we will invest more deeply than ever in this transatlantic bond with our American friends in the years to come.” But turning to the EU, he said: “And we will rebuild our ties with Europe, too. Because, I’m sorry to say, the shocking legacy this government inherited in so many areas – from the nation’s finances to the state of the NHS – extends beyond our shores.” The prime minister made it clear that he believes Mr Trump will not abandon Ukraine, despite appointments to the incoming president’s cabinet indicating that he plans to end financial and military aid to the country. “There’s no question it’s right we support Ukraine. But we must also be clear that it is deeply in our self-interest. I would encourage everyone here to stop and think for a moment about what it would mean to us, to our continent, to the world, if Russia wins. What would it mean for our values – for democracy, commerce, and liberty?” On a day when his government announced a new defence industrial strategy but delayed announcing a timetable to achieve the target of 2.5 per cent of GDP being spent on defence, the prime minister called on other countries to pay their fair share. “It is vital that all European nations step up to protect our shared future. We will set out in our strategic defence review how we are going to modernise our armed forces to make us more secure at home, and strong abroad. And we will maximise our investment by working with others, like our partnership with Italy and Japan to build the next generation of fighter planes.”

There's more than just school pride and bragging rights to all that bellyaching over who might be in and who might be out of college football 's first 12-team playoff. Try the more than $115 million that will be spread across the conferences at the end of the season, all depending on who gets in and which teams go the farthest. According to the College Football Playoff website, the 12 teams simply making the bracket earn their conferences $4 million each. Another $4 million goes to conferences whose teams get into the quarterfinals. Then, there's $6 million more for teams that make the semifinals and another $6 million for those who play for the title. Most of this bonanza comes courtesy of ESPN , which is forking over $1.3 billion a year to televise the new postseason. A lot of that money is already earmarked — more goes to the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference than the Big 12 or Atlantic Coast — but a lot is up for grabs in the 11 games that will play out between the opening round on Dec. 20 and the final on Jan. 20. In all, the teams that make the title game will bring $20 million to their conferences, all of which distribute that money, along with billions in TV revenue and other sources, in different ways. In fiscal 2022-23, the Big Ten, for instance, reported revenue of nearly $880 million and distributed about $60.5 million to most of its members. The massive stakes might help explain the unabashed lobbying coming from some corners of the football world, as the tension grows in advance of Sunday's final rankings, which will set the bracket. Earlier this week, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark lit into the selection committee, which doesn't have a single team higher than 15 in the rankings. That does two things: It positions the Big 12 as a one-bid league, and also threatens to makes its champion — either Arizona State or Iowa State — the fifth-best among conference titlists that get automatic bids. Only the top four of those get byes, which could cost the Big 12 a spot in the quarterfinals — or $4 million. “The committee continues to show time and time again that they are paying attention to logos versus resumes,” Yormark said this week, while slamming the idea of teams with two losses in his conference being ranked worse than teams with three in the SEC. The ACC is also staring at a one-bid season with only No. 8 SMU inside the cut line of this week's projected bracket. Miami 's loss last week all but bumped the Hurricanes out of the playoffs, a snub that ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said left him “incredibly shocked and disappointed." “As we look ahead to the final rankings, we hope the committee will reconsider and put a deserving Miami in the field," Phillips said in a statement. The lobbying and bickering filters down to the campuses that feel the impact. And, of course, to social media. One of the most entertaining episodes came earlier this week when athletic directors at Iowa State and SMU went back and forth about whose team was more deserving. There are a few stray millions that the selection committee cannot really influence, including a $3 million payment to conferences that make the playoff. In a reminder that all these kids are going to school, after all, the conferences get $300,000 per football team that meets academic requirements to participate in the postseason. (That's basically everyone). ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll and https://apnews.com/hub/college-footballSince November 27, a coalition of opposition forces in northwest Syria, led by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched an offensive against the Assad regime and its allied Iranian militias’ strongholds in the area. On November 29, opposition forces captured Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city. On December 5, the opposition rebels entered Hama, Syria’s fourth-largest city, after dictator Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian Arab Army (SAA) announced that it was withdrawing from the city to its outskirts. This is the first major opposition offensive since the 2020 Idlib ceasefire between Russia and Turkey, and it marks the most significant shift in the balance of power in Syria’s war since Russia’s military intervention in the conflict almost a decade ago. The capture of Hama is a significant strategic victory for the rebels, but Damascus remains the biggest prize. Here’s what to watch as the rebel offensive continues to unfold. Why Hama matters The rebels’ operation, named “Deterrence of Aggression,” was a response to increased shelling of civilian areas by government forces since the 2020 ceasefire agreement. With the control of strategic heights surrounding rebel-controlled northwest Syria, the regime and Iranian proxies utilized artillery, rockets, and first-person view drones to attack civilian infrastructure across Idlib province. Just a day before the operation launched, Assad regime forces attacked an elementary school in Ariha, killing three children and injuring fourteen. The rebels’ success so far has been attributed both to external factors, such as diminished Iranian and Hezbollah support for the regime, and to internal coordination among opposition forces in Idlib and neighboring Aleppo. As the rebels advance in Hama province, the power dynamics are dramatically shifting in their favor. The collapse of government defenses suggests a tactical failure and a broader strategic disarray within the Assad regime. Taking Aleppo is a major feat by the rebels, but securing Hama holds a special political and strategic importance. Hama is the city from which Syria’s early uprising in the 1960s and 1970s started. In 1982, it was subjected to a brutal military campaign, during which tens of thousands of its residents were killed and displaced. The event remains alive in the collective memory of Syrians as a demonstration of the willingness of the regime, then under Hafez al-Assad and now under his son Bashar, to exercise violence to remain in power. Hama also played a prominent role in the 2011 uprising as a site of large-scale popular protests. Hama is also strategically positioned in central Syria between major cities, making it a critical node for controlling supply lines and transportation routes across the country. The province hosts a significant military airbase used by the SAA and its allies, including Russian forces. The airbase has been critical for launching airstrikes, reconnaissance, and logistical operations throughout the conflict. The city and its surroundings, which the rebels are currently taking over, also house several military barracks and artillery positions, making it a vital operational center. In all, the rebels’ advance in and around Hama will seriously weaken the Assad regime’s ability to counter rebels’ attacks, reverse its losses from the past week, and defend its remaining strongholds in central Syria. What’s next for the rebels? Next, the opposition forces will likely advance southward and push toward the capital, Damascus. But after successfully capturing Aleppo and Hama, the rebel forces will face military, social, and governance challenges as they move south. The rebels will need to cement their gains in Hama province. The area will be important to maintain military and strategic leverage against Assad, and it is likely to be the first target for any attempt by Assad to the reverse the course of the rebel offensive. The rebels may also face logistical and operational challenges, including the need for supplies. Open-source intelligence indicates that as the SAA withdraws from different military bases, it is leaving enough military equipment and ammunition to power the rebel advances. However, the area captured in Hama province may stretch the rebel forces and expose them to counterattacks. As the rebels head south toward Homs, they will be faced with new challenges. Homs is Syria’s third-largest city and serves as a critical transit hub connecting Damascus to the northern and western provinces, including the coastal strongholds of Latakia and Tartus, where the Russian military has bases. Entering Homs province requires going through large Alawite communities, many of which strongly support Assad. This poses a challenge for rebels to establish local support. A decade of fighting between Assad-allied militias and rebels within the province has resulted in more fortifications being build there. Homs is also home to a significant concentration of Syrian government forces, bolstered by allied militias and a large Hezbollah presence. More importantly, the rebels advancing toward Homs will test Russia’s redlines in Syria. So far, Russia has been absent from providing serious military support to uphold Assad’s defenses across areas he’s losing to the rebels. While Russia has conducted some airstrikes in Idlib and Aleppo to counter rebel advances, it has not engaged directly in Hama. This restraint reflects Moscow’s strategic calculations to avoid overextension. However, Russia appears committed to preserving the Assad regime, its primary foothold in the Middle East, and it has reportedly promised additional military aid to Damascus. If the rebels now advance toward Homs, Russia will have to decide where it draws the line, whether that is in preventing an advance toward Assad in Damascus or the protection of its major naval and air hub in western Syria. The evolution of HTS Syria’s rebels also face challenges in Hama and other areas under their control. Rebel factions in Syria have long had differing ideologies, and over the past decade they have often struggled to present a unified governance structure. This lack of cohesion led to internal conflicts and weakened their overall ability to govern. So far in Hama, however, the rebels appear to be taking a different approach. Led by HTS, the rebels participating in Deterrence of Aggression have shown discipline in their military conduct, their control of civilian infrastructure, and their outreach to minority communities. Statements from rebel leadership emphasize the protection of civilians and Syria’s cultural heritage, reflecting efforts to gain local and possibly international legitimacy. This approach draws on HTS’s experience in Idlib province, where it has maintained control through a combination of military dominance, localized governance structures, and a focus on community relations, including outreach to minority groups. While previously associated with al-Qaeda, HTS has evolved into a locally focused group, abandoned al-Qaeda’s cross-national jihadism ideology, and become the main force to counter the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and al-Qaeda in northwest Syria. Yet the group remains controversial due to its past militant and extremist activities. HTS also remains a designated terrorist organization by the United States and the United Nations, which presents challenges for foreign governments to deal with it. HTS has announced its willingness to dissolve itself, again, and work with partners on the ground to develop a more representative governing structure, in what seems to be a signal of its pragmatism toward the European Union (EU) and the United States. Diplomats have also indicated that HTS has communicated with different EU capitals its willingness to work with them to facilitate a safe return for Syrian refugees in Europe. The control of Syria’s second- and fourth-largest cities and their advances toward Homs present Syria’s rebels with challenges and opportunities. Aleppo is one of only two metropolitan centers in Syria with a population of more than four million. Hama is home to more than a million Syrians. In contrast to long-held Idlib, the rebels will be dealing with diverse religious, cultural, and ethnic communities, and they will have to adapt relatively quickly to the challenges ahead. If the rebels are successful in providing good governance in Aleppo and Hama, then it bodes well for their ability to successfully govern Damascus, and ultimately the whole of Syria. The world is watching. Qutaiba Idlbi is a senior fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center and Middle East Programs, where he leads the Council’s work on Syria.

The Apprentice star also argued that a lack of clarity from the Government on the ownership test is causing “significant uncertainty” for potential investors. This came as the House of Lords continued its scrutiny of the Football Governance Bill, which seeks to establish an independent regulator for the top five tiers of the men’s game. In the upper chamber, Baroness Brady said: “We are creating legislation which will profoundly affect 160 quite unique institutions, from Premier League clubs through to the National League community clubs, but it is important for everyone to understand that the consultation with these affected businesses by the current Government has been remarkably limited, almost unbelievably so. “Just seven Premier League clubs, I was one of them, was granted a brief half-hour meeting with the Secretary of State over the summer. “And following this cursory engagement, significant decisions were made that could fundamentally affect the future of English football, most notably with the inclusion of parachute payments within the backstop mechanism. “This is particularly concerning given that fundamental issues still remained unresolved, we still lack any clarity on Uefa’s position on state interference, for example, this clearly creates profound uncertainty for clubs competing in or aspiring to European competition, as well as our national teams.” “We don’t know what the ownership test will look like, this causes significant uncertainty for potential investors as to whether they are able to own a club,” she added. Lady Brady continued: “I have spoken to many of my colleagues across all of the football pyramid, we are all alarmed about and puzzled by the lack of discussion on the Bill with ministers. “Would the minister agree that we all want to get the detail of this Bill right? And can she see any downsides to providing meaningful opportunities to hear from all clubs across the football pyramid affected by the legislation?” Prior to this, Tory shadow sports minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay had tabled an amendment which he said would allow clubs to “make their views known on this legislation” by including specific competitions on the face of the Bill. Labour frontbencher Baroness Twycross told the upper chamber: “I don’t think the leagues are confused either on which leagues this legislation will apply to.” She added: “This power is both reasonable and the result of evidence-based consultation with all key stakeholders in the industry. “This power ensures that the competitions in scope can be amended in a timely manner and ensures the scope of the regime remains relevant.” The peer later said: “Over the past three years there have been countless opportunities for all affected and interested parties to make representations.” Lady Brady also raised concerns about the financial distribution backstop, which she said is “clearly designed as a mechanism to gain direct access to, and apportionate Premier League revenue, and no-one else’s”. “I might add the backstop will allow the IFR (Independent Football Regulator) to do this even if it was against the Premier League clubs’ will, or even without the clubs’ agreement, even if it was to have a detrimental effect on the clubs and the overall competition it removes revenue from,” she added. The backstop would allow the new IFR to intervene in the distribution of Premier League broadcast revenue down the leagues as a last resort. It could be triggered by the Premier League, English Football League (EFL) or National League to mediate the fair financial distribution of this revenue if they are not able to come to an agreement. Conservative peers later raised concerns over the cost implications to clubs of establishing the regulator, although they faced claims of “filibustering” – wasting time by making overlong speeches in a bid to delay progress. Labour peer Lord Watson of Invergowrie questioned why Lord Parkinson was showing “confected outrage” at the Bill when the former culture minister would have been defending a similar proposal had the Tories remained in power. Lord Parkinson, in his reply, said: “We want to see this regulator established, we want to see it doing its work and doing so effectively, but we also see before us a Bill that is different because of the election that was called and the result that happened, and we’re interrogating particularly closely the changes that the Government have made to the Bill – of which there are many. “And we have more concerns on these benches than we did before the election from my colleagues behind me about the way we do it.” The Tory peer pointed to Labour frontbenchers fulfilling their duties to “properly scrutinise” then-government legislation when they were on the opposition benches. Lady Twycross, in an intervention, said: “While I agree that (Lord Parkinson) is correct that I would scrutinise legislation when I was sitting on those (opposition) benches, I have never sought to filibuster a Bill to which my party had committed, which my party had laid before Parliament, and intended to filibuster it to the point of getting us stuck in treacle.” Lord Parkinson replied: “That is not what we’re doing.” Niall Couper, chief executive of the campaign group Fair Game, wrote on social media site X: “Watching opposition benches blatantly filibustering to destroy the Football Governance Bill is nothing short of sporting vandalism.”

The masked gunman who stalked and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel used ammunition emblazoned with the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” a law enforcement official said Thursday. The gunman is still at large and a manhunt is underway. Here's the latest: Just minutes before the shooting, the suspect was seen on surveillance footage purchasing the two items from a nearby Starbucks. Both the water bottle and protein bar wrapper were later recovered from a trash can in the vicinity of the killing, according to a police spokesperson. They’ve been sent to the city’s medical examiner for expedited fingerprint testing. As the suspect remained at large Thursday afternoon, New York police were sorting through a growing number of leads coming in through a public hotline. Many have been unfounded, including a tip from a commuter who claimed to have spotted the shooter on a Long Island Rail Road train Wednesday evening. Police searched the train, but found no sign of the gunman. Members of the public have also provided police with several different names of people who bear a resemblance to the gunman — though they have yet to confirm the shooter’s identity. NYPD spokesperson Carlos Nieves urged anyone with information to contact the department “even if it seems trivial.” “We ask you to call the tip line because that little piece of information could be the missing piece of the puzzle that ties everything together,” he said. Users’ reactions — and in many cases jokes — populated comment sections teeming with frustration toward health insurers broadly and UnitedHealthcare in particular. “I would be happy to help look for the shooter but vision isn’t covered under my healthcare plan,” one comment read on Instagram. “Thoughts and prior authorizations!” wrote another user. Images released by police of a person they say is wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting match the lobby of the HI New York City hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Both feature a black-and-white checkered floor and a distinctive bench in the shape of a semicircle. Matheus Taranto, a guest at the hostel who’s visiting from Brazil, says he saw police at the lodging Wednesday evening. He said an officer wouldn’t let him access a bathroom where he wanted to brush his teeth. “I asked why, he was like, no, nothing happened,” said Taranto, 24. He didn’t connect the dots with the shooting until later. In Minnesota, police in the Minneapolis suburb of Maple Grove, where Thompson lived, said Thursday they believe a bomb threat on Wednesday night was a hoax. Maple Grove police put out a statement Thursday saying a “suspected swatting investigation” was underway. The department said it received a report of a bomb threat directed at two addresses around 7 p.m. CT Wednesday. The Minneapolis Bomb Squad and the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office assisted, but investigators found no suspicions devices or other items. “The case is considered an active investigation, while the incident appears to be a hoax. No further comments will be made at this time,” the police statement said. Police reports provided to The Associated Press by the department show that officers made contact with family members at one of the homes and were told they had seen nothing suspicious and had received no direct threats. Back in Thompson’s home state of Minnesota, authorities were investigating a bomb threat that reportedly was made against his home Wednesday night, after his death. It was first reported by TMZ. City Prosecutor Andrew Draper confirmed to The Associated Press via email Thursday that he received an email Wednesday night “regarding a bomb threat. I reported it to the Maple Grove Police Department and do not have any additional information.” Maple Grove police officials did not immediately respond to requests for details Thursday. Local ATF spokesperson Ashlee Sherrill said: “ATF was made aware of the incident in Maple Grove last night, but no ATF resources were deployed. We are unable to confirm any further details.” A local FBI spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for information on the FBI’s involvement in the investigation. The words emblazoned on the ammunition used in the shooting – “deny,” “defend” and “depose” – were written in permanent marker, according to a law enforcement official. The official wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. — Jake Offenhartz As of Thursday morning, police were still searching for the shooter. They released new photos of a person they said is wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting. The images match the lobby of the HI New York City hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, including its black-and-white checkered floor and a distinctive bench in the shape of a semi-circle. An employee at the hostel said police had visited but declined to provide further information. Danielle Brumfitt, a spokesperson for the lodging, said in an emailed statement that they are cooperating with the NYPD but can’t comment due to the active investigation. According to the official who spoke to AP about the ammunition messaging, investigators are running DNA and fingerprint analysis on items found near the shooting, including a water bottle, that they believe the suspect may have discarded. Additionally, they’re looking into whether the suspect had pre-positioned a bike as part of an escape plan. Doctors and patients have become particularly frustrated with prior authorizations, which are requirements that an insurer approve surgery or care before it happens. UnitedHealthcare was named in an October report detailing how the insurer’s prior authorization denial rate for some Medicare Advantage patients has surged in recent years. The report from the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations also named rivals Humana and CVS. Insurers say tactics like prior authorization are needed to limit unnecessary care and help control spiraling medical costs. Frustrations extend beyond the coverage of care. Expensive breakthrough medications to slow Alzheimer’s disease or help with obesity are frequently not covered or have coverage limits. In the U.S. health care system, patients get coverage through a mix of private insurers such as UnitedHealthcare and government-funded programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. That can prove particularly frustrating for doctors and patients because coverage often varies by insurer. Polls reflect those frustrations with the U.S. health care system in general and insurance companies in particular. About two-thirds of Americans said health insurance companies deserve “a lot of blame” for high health care costs, according to a KFF poll conducted in February . Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News that he told her “there were some people that had been threatening him.” She didn’t have details but suggested the threats may have involved issues with insurance coverage. Eric Werner, the police chief in the Minneapolis suburb where Thompson lived, said his department had not received any reports of threats against the executive. A message left at the scene of an insurance executive’s fatal shooting — “deny,” “defend” and “depose” — echoes a phrase commonly used to describe insurer tactics to avoid paying claims. The three words were emblazoned on the ammunition a masked gunman used to kill UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson , a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday. They’re similar to the phrase “delay, deny, defend” — the way some attorneys describe how insurers deny services and payment, and the title of a 2010 book that was highly critical of the industry. Police haven’t officially commented on the wording or any connection between them and the common phrase. But Thompson’s shooting and the messages on the ammunition have sparked outrage on social media and elsewhere, reflecting a deepening frustration Americans have over the cost and complexity of getting care. ▶ Read more about the messaging left behind by the shooter The New York Police Department released photos Thursday morning, asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the individual pictured. Police say the person is wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting of the UnitedHealthcare CEO. A Senate panel has been investigating how frequently three major insurers, including UnitedHealthcare, deny care to patients who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. It has also investigated the use of artificial intelligence in deny those claims. Medicare Advantage is the private version of Medicare, which provides health insurance to millions of older Americans. The Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee’s report released earlier this year found that as UnitedHealthcare relied more on its automated system to review claims denials increased for post-acute treatment, which includes nursing home or rehabilitation care. The insurer denied nearly a quarter of claims, a rate that doubled over just a two-year period from 2020 to 2022. Joseph Kenny, the NYPD chief of detectives, says the shooter wore a black face mask, black-and-white sneakers and a distinctive gray backpack. He arrived outside the hotel about five minutes before UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson did, then waited and ignored other pedestrians before he approached Thompson from behind. After the assailant began to fire, his 9 mm pistol jammed but he quickly fixed it and kept firing, Kenny said, another sign of the shooter’s professionalism. “From watching the video, it does seem that he’s proficient in the use of firearms as he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly,” Kenny said. The hostels were on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and police were following a tip that the suspect may have stayed at one of the residences, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. The official requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the ongoing search. According to an employee of Kama Central Park, two detectives arrived at the hostel at 7 a.m. Thursday with a photo of the shooter and asked staff if they recognized the man. They did not, the employee said, and the detectives left soon after. An employee at the nearby HI New York City hostel also confirmed that police had visited the location Thursday, but declined to provide further information. — Jake Offenhartz New York Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday the shooter used a silencer — something he’d never encountered in his 22 years as a police officer. “In all of my years in law enforcement I have never seen a silencer before,” Adams, a retired NYPD captain, said in an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “And so that was really something that was shocking to us all.” The masked gunman used ammunition emblazoned with the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose,” a law enforcement official said Thursday. The official was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. The words on the ammunition may have been a reference to strategies insurance companies use to try to avoid paying claims. Investigators recovered several 9 mm shell casings from outside the hotel, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny had said earlier. — Mike Balsamo, Jake Offenhartz and Michael R. Sisak The chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, one of the nation’s largest insurers, was killed Wednesday in midtown Manhattan in what police described as a targeted attack by a shooter outside a hotel where the company was holding a conference. ▶ Read more about the key things to know about the fatal attackAuthorities in Romania have revealed details of what appears to be a major attempt to interfere in the country’s presidential elections using the social media platform TikTok, and with a series of cyber-attacks. Romania's domestic intelligence service says there are signs the effort was "co-ordinated by a state-sponsored actor". Calin Georgescu, a far-right Nato-sceptic who has previously praised Vladimir Putin, was almost unknown in Romania until he won the first round of voting in the presidential elections two weeks ago. Now Romanian intelligence says his sudden and surprise surge in popularity is down to a "highly organised" and "guerrilla" campaign on social media, sharing identical messaging and using influencers. They say it was conducted from "external locations" to bypass controls. A separate intelligence assessment says that Romania has been identified as an "enemy state" by Moscow and a priority target for what it calls "aggressive hybrid actions". The politically explosive information – which has landed just days before the second round of voting - comes from declassified documents published this evening by the outgoing president, Klaus Iohannis. They reveal how paid content supporting Georgescu was promoted on TikTok, without being marked as election campaigning – in violation of the platform’s own rules and of Romanian electoral law. Other candidates’ content was subject to closer controls. Georgescu has always said he spent "zero" on election promotion, denying he was even campaigning. But the intelligence documents identify one TikTok account which they say made payments of $381,000 (£299,819; €361,872) in just one month from 24 October – to users who were promoting Georgescu. Georgescu claims the release of the documents is a coordinated attempt to block his candidacy. “I think it’s the first time in the history of the world when a state is organising an action against a candidate to stop him from running,” he said in a TV interview on Wednesday. He also denied knowing any of the influencers or funders mentioned in the reports. The documents released in this highly unusual move were all papers drawn up for a meeting of the security council following the first round of the presidential election. They also reveal that access data for electoral websites was stolen from legitimate users and published online “on cyber-crime platforms originating from Russia”. Separately, the intelligence agencies report some 85,000 attempted hacks in an attempt to access electoral data and change content – including on election day. The report says the cyber-attackers used advanced methods to remain anonymous, working in a way and on a scale "typical of state-sponsored actors". An investigation is ongoing to discover who was responsible and whether there was any impact on the election. Russia has denied any interference in Romania's election process. Far-right frontrunner Georgescu is due to face reformist candidate Elena Lasconi in a second round vote on Sunday. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu – who came 3rd in the presidential race – has now announced he will "fully endorse" Elena Lasconi. But that’s assuming the vote goes ahead. The prosecutor’s office is now examining the new documents. "I hope that, based on the evidence published today, the state authorities will take appropriate action, and all those responsible will be held accountable," Ciolacu said. He added that people's votes have shown they want the "continuation of Romania's European development path". A pro-EU protest has been called for Thursday evening. Commenting on the protest, Georgescu warned against possible unrest, citing the "Maidan" in Ukraine - the revolution of 2014 that ousted a pro-Russian president. "Please stay at home with your family. We need social tranquillity. God will not let Romania down,” Georgescu said.

Christopher Nolan is following his Oscar-winning “Oppenheimer” with a true epic: Homer’s “The Odyssey.” It will open in theaters on July 17, 2026, Universal Pictures said Monday. Details remain scarce, but the studio teased that it will be a “mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX technology.” It will also be the first time that an adaptation of Homer’s saga will play on IMAX film screens. Nolan has been an IMAX enthusiast for years, going back to “The Dark Knight,” and has made his last three films exclusively using large format film and the highest resolution film cameras. For “Oppenheimer,” the first black-and-white IMAX film stock was developed. Nolan hasn’t said specifically what the new technology for “The Odyssey” will be, but earlier this month he told The Associated Press that they’re in an intensive testing phase with IMAX to prepare for the new production. “They have an incredible engineering staff, really brilliant minds doing extraordinary work,” Nolan said. “It’s wonderful to see innovation in the celluloid film arena still happening and happening at the highest level possible.” “The Odyssey” will be Nolan’s second collaboration with Universal Pictures following “Oppenheimer,” which earned nearly $1 billion at the box office and won the filmmaker his first Oscars, including for best director and best picture . Rumors about his next project have been swirling ever since, with near-daily speculations about plot — none of which turned out to be true — and casting. While there are many reports about actors joining the ensemble, none has been officially confirmed by the studio. Lindsey Bahr, The Associated Press

In the final days before Romania’s parliamentary elections this weekend, the governing parties’ leaders both quit, pollsters gave up on projecting the results and the nation’s top court cast serious doubt on the integrity of the voting process. And the stakes couldn’t be higher. Sunday’s parliamentary contest pits the pro-European establishment against far-right insurgents and will help to determine whether a critical NATO member and Ukrainian ally lurches closer to Moscow. It takes place in an atmosphere of scarcely believable chaos and confusion. Romania is in the middle of three consecutive weekend ballots for both a new parliament and a new president. Events spun off the rails in the first round of the presidential election on Nov. 24, when a Russia sympathizer with barely any public profile emerged as the shock winner. Calin Georgescu reported zero spending on a campaign that was mainly driven by social media videos on TikTok recorded from his living room. His victory sparked fears that Romania’s democratic process had been hacked by the Kremlin. In the country’s biggest political crisis since the communist regime collapsed over three decades ago, the constitutional court has ordered a recount of the presidential ballots, but it won’t have the fresh results until Sunday night and there is mounting speculation that it may order a rerun. As voters prepare to return to the polls on Sunday, there are major questions hanging over the process that they simply do not have answers to. The prospect of a far-right surge has sent hundreds to take the streets in freezing temperatures. In Bucharest, demonstrators chanted “We want freedom, not fascism.” For all the concerns about Russian interference, there’s also deep frustration, especially outside the major cities, with the mainstream candidates who were ejected in the first presidential ballot. Romania’s two most established parties, the Social Democrats and the Liberals, have governed in coalition for the past three years and the country has suffered rising inequality and rampant inflation. The vote puts 19 million Romanians at the heart of the struggle between the democratic institutions of the European Union and Russia’s expansionary ambitions. To the north, Romania borders Ukraine, where the Russian army has been fighting for almost three years to restore what President Vladimir Putin says is his country’s historic territorial rights. To the east is Moldova, where a pro-Western president survived another election earlier this month amid widespread reports of Kremlin interference. Putin’s ally Viktor Orban governs Hungary to the west. Romania, too, an EU member, could soon have a pro-Russian president and a far-right government, if the next two weeks of voting break in their favor. Many Romanians only began to learn after the vote about 62-year-old Georgescu, the agricultural engineer who languished in the single digits in polls just weeks before the election. A one-time ally of ultranationalist Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, Georgescu has denounced military support for Ukraine, called for a quick end to the war and cast doubt on the benefits of the country’s NATO membership. “I do not want to leave NATO, I do not want to leave the European Union,” he said on Tuesday, pushing back against his characterization by the local media. “I am a Romanian — I have no connection with Russia, I’m not a legionnaire, I’m not an antisemite.” Some of the comments collide with previous statements, in which he laid blame for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with NATO — and raised the prospect of leaving the military alliance if it didn’t guarantee peace. In 2020, Georgescu praised Putin as one of the worlds few true leaders. The alarm deepened after Georgescu said he had no campaign funding — and that supporter financing had been donated. The claim raised hackles from critics who pointed out that the candidate’s high-resolution videos, including some with sweeping landscape shots — featuring him on horseback, performing judo moves, dipping into a mountain lake — could only have been produced by professionals. An investigation by local news website G4media suggested the effort was artificially amplified by foreign interference. Georgescu’s profile was heavily promoted by a volunteers who were prompted to spread posts in exchange for “undisclosed rewards,” the website reported. A similar scheme took place during the vote in Moldova. Romania’s Supreme Defense Council, which includes top government and intelligence officials, issued a statement Thursday saying that one candidate — it didn’t name Georgescu — benefited from “massive exposure and preferential treatment.” The panel cited Russian influence operations that aimed to shift public opinion in Romania — and accused TikTok of failing to label the candidate’s videos as election material as required by Romanian law. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who has frequently misled the media over previous disinformation campaigns, said Friday that allegations of Russian interference in Romanian elections are unfounded and unsupported, according to the Interfax news agency. TikTok said it was “categorically false” to claim that it treated Georgescu’s account differently from other candidates. Adding to the sense of a country spinning out of control, Social Democrat Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned his party’s leadership while his coalition partners, the Liberals, ousted their leader. After pollsters completely missed Georgescu’s victory last week, they’ve opted not to release any further surveys, so voters, candidates and officials are all essentially flying blind ahead of Sunday’s vote. Before the voluntary polling blackout, the ultranationalists tied to another candidate George Simion, had been making steady gains and were running second place behind the Social Democrats. Now though, no one is really sure where they stand. “The situation is very fluid,” said Remus Stefureac, the director of research firm INSCOP. He predicted that Romania’s pro-European would still get between 50% and 60%, enabling them to form a government, but without much conviction. “In a background of increased social tensions, a sovereign movement can get a temporary boost,” he said. ——— (With assistance from Slav Okov and Demetrios Pogkas.) ©2024 Bloomberg L.P. US News Today Live: Jamie Dimon engages in policy talks with Donald Trump via secret back channels: Report US News Today Live: OTT releases in first week of December 2024 in US: The Only Girl in the Orchestra, Churchill at War, Fly Me to the MoonArticle content Supporters at NorQuest College paid respects Thursday to slain security guard Harshandeep Singh and his dreams of someday joining the Edmonton Police Service. “Harshandeep actually just wanted to serve Canada. He had a dream for completing his studies — he was already undertaking his planning for joining the police force in Edmonton,” said family friend Jas Panesar. Singh, 20, was a NorQuest student almost finished with his studies and just three days on the job when he was shot to death in a central Edmonton apartment building early on Dec. 6. The accused Evan Chase Francis Rain, 30, and Judith Saulteaux, 30, are being held in the case. Rain has an extensive and violent criminal record. Family member Gulzar Singh Nirman called for tougher laws to prevent other similar tragedies. “We lost one Harshandeep, but we don’t want to lose anyone else,” he said, asking legislators at the city, provincial and federal levels to help tighten up laws and consider the victim as well as the young Indian student and Tim Hortons worker slain by a stranger with a boxcutter in a Downtown parkade. “No other young man should go from this world. I hope it will never happen again,” he said. Nirman said Singh’s family in India are in very tough condition but they were touched by the NorQuest event and a planned Sunday tribute by law enforcement agencies organized by the Alberta First Responders Association, which recognizes the young man as a first responder fallen in the line of duty. . For a newcomer unfamiliar with Edmonton neighbourhoods, frank and fair disclosures would be in order for a security guard new on the job, said Dan Jones, chairman of justice studies at NorQuest College. “I think the security companies need to be a little bit more aware of where they’re sending people and very, very open about what they’re sending them into,” he said. Jones said the sadness has been overwhelming for some staff. “Everyone’s gutted,” he said, adding that tragedies can bring people together. “I think that sometimes out of tragedy comes some beautiful things. And that’s what I think is happening today,” Jones said. Hundreds of supporters filed by to leave flowers and glowing candles at a tribute table bearing a photo of a smiling Singh with a garland of flowers around the photo. A Sikh priest offered prayers in Punjabi and Sikh families and students offered heartfelt responses. Carolyn Campbell, president and CEO of NorQuest College, offered the school’s deepest condolences to Singh’s family. “The pain of losing a loved one never truly goes away,” she said, adding that she hopes the sharing of stories and memories would help them know he was a well-loved member of the NorQuest community. “We are all in this together in our global community,” said NorQuest cultural adviser Lance Scout, describing Singh as a “young brave.” “We are all interrelated. The energy of our brother will prevail within these halls of education.” Fellow students react Earlier in the week, other Sikh students spoke with Postmedia. “It’s the saddest thing that happened in the city,” said Arshdeep Sing h, 32. “We all come here for a better future. So if the future will be like this, it will be hard for us.” Sing h supports his studies by working in the construction industry and he’s concerned about public transit safety. “I think the security job is hard,” he said. “Sometimes when we are in LRT stations, I feel it’s unsafe, so I try to avoid that. I usually prefer to travel by my car,” he said. He’s haunted by the account of Jashandeep Singh Maan, the 22-year-old Punjabi student slain with a boxcutter in the Tim Hortons loading area where he worked in a Downtown Edmonton parkade in September. That was called “an isolated event,” and Sing h speculated about what could have caused someone to shoot an unarmed security guard making his rounds. “I don’t know what happened to the people. I think the people who used that gun, they were drug addicted and they didn’t know what they were doing with other people,” he said. Classmates Roban Singh and Ikbal Singh could identify with their slain schoolmate. They didn’t know him personally, but like Harshandeep Singh, they are from Haryana, a neighbouring province to the Indian province of Punjab. Roban Singh, 19, who studies business administration and works for a moving company to support his studies, said Harshandeep Singh shared a room with a friend in a home on the south side of Edmonton. “He was really a sweet guy. He just minded his own business. He was really attached to his family, and his family was attached to him.” The trek to Canada for an education isn’t what it used to be, he said. “It’s getting hard for international students. It wasn’t the same situation in the early ’90s. It’s getting scarier day by day,” Roban Singh said. jcarmichael@postmedia.com Recommended from Editorial Accused in Edmonton security guard killing had history of violence and gang involvement: parole board Witness recalls night Edmonton security guard Harshandeep Singh gunned down Bookmark our website and support our journalism: Don’t miss the news you need to know — add EdmontonJournal.com and EdmontonSun.com to your bookmarks and sign up for our newsletters . Act fast, though; these deals could end at any moment as we edge closer to 2025. TV deals This Insignia 720p TV is as basic as a display gets, but if you're looking for a small, compact smart TV that you can put in a kitchen or dorm, you're not likely to find a more inexpensive option out there. This 720p TV comes with Alexa Voice Remote capabilities, so you can easily search across apps, switch inputs, and much more using your voice — no clunky remotes and tedious typing necessary. We only recommend it if you can find it on sale, though. TCL's S5 LED display doesn't use quantum dots like the brand's pricier QLED TVs, but it's still capable of wide color support and it uses the Amazon Fire TV OS for easy integration with Alexa. This 55-inch TCL TV has a QLED panel, which is impressive in a set this cheap. It lacks local dimming so contrast performance isn't as good as pricier TVs, but it supports a wide color gamut and has decent HDR brightness for its class. The C3 delivers excellent contrast thanks to its OLED Evo panel, and unlike similarly priced Samsung OLED TVs, it supports Dolby Vision. The C4 is LG's latest midrange 4K OLED TV. It carries over everything we loved about last year's C3 while offering a slight increase in brightness and support for a faster 144Hz refresh rate with a PC. The S90D is our favorite 2024 TV overall. Its QD-OLED panel delivers a high-contrast image with vivid colors, wide viewing angles, and impressive brightness for this class. The TCL QM7 is an impressive midrange QLED TV. Its Mini LED contrast performance, high brightness, and 144Hz gaming capabilities are nearly unrivaled at this price range. The 2023 S95C is still one of Samsung’s top OLED TVs. It has a sleeker design and a brighter picture than step-down models, but it can't quite reach the peak brightness of the 2024 S95D. And while it has better black levels in a bright room, it can't combat reflections as well as the S95D. Samsung’s 85-inch Frame TV may be the next extra-large TV for you. It has a sharp 4K QLED screen encased in a classy frame to make it look like a work of art. This is the 2022 model, which costs less than the latest edition but offers very similar performance. Walmart | Amazon | Samsung | Best Buy Fashion deals This popular tee has a buttery soft, second-skin feel and is bound to go fast amid the sale. Like most of Bonobos offerings, these jeans are available in a huge variety of fits and lengths. Dubbed “All Season Jeans” because they’re designed to be worn in the winter and the summer, this is a perfect wardrobe staple. When we reviewed Everlane’s denim we were super impressed with how comfortable and flattering the jeans are. These are cut in a baggy bootcut silhouette that is all the rage right now. Wear these shoes as knee-high boots or fold them down and expose the shearling for a completely different look. Constructed with genuine suede, these best-selling boots stand out for their three-inch block heel, adding a nice boost of height and sacrificing comfort. As you can guess by its name, they also feature stylish seam detailing. These are sleek waterproof winter boots with sturdy traction to prevent slips. The interior wool blend lining is capable of insulating even in negative temperatures. The New Heights suede clogs are a prime example of "cottagecore" fall fashion. On the inside is a microfiber sock liner, so you can dress them up with tube socks or wear them barefoot. These retro-inspired sneakers are made with responsibly sourced, high-quality materials, creatively crafted into a pair of walking shoes that you can wash and wear for the seasons ahead. It features Allbirds' all-new cushioning technology called SwiftFoam. This denim-and-gold-accented Tabby in the large size is a modern revival of a 1970s design. It can be worn as a shoulder bag, a crossbody, or a top-handle bag. Coperni's iconic purse silhouette looks fantastic in snake print. Garmin is a top brand in the smartwatch industry for a good reason. Fitbit's Sense 2 combines the brand's advanced health and fitness features with decent smartwatch capability, unique sleep tracking, and a clean design reminiscent of the Apple Watch. Mint's Unlimited plan offers unlimited talk, text, and data, but you'll be slowed to 4G LTE speeds after using 40GB. New customers can get half off their first three months when they pay up front. We recommend signing up for the Unlimited option to score the most savings since it's typically the priciest of the lineup. The second-generation Apple Watch SE is an impressive entry-level wearable that shares the same processor as the Series 8 and Ultra, so it's still smooth despite being two years old. It doesn’t have the advanced health sensors of premium models, but it offers enough features to satisfy most people. The Pixel 9 Pro XL offers a large 6.8-inch display and one of the best battery test results we've seen in a phone. The Pixel 9 Pro shares the same performance, first-rate three-lens camera system, super-bright Actua display, and Gemini AI suite with a free year of Gemini Advanced. The Jackery Explorer 300 Portable Power Station can power or charge six small devices at a time and recharges using a solar panel (not included), wall outlet, or car port. Right now, it’s at an all-time low price when hitting the coupon box at Amazon. It lacks a separate subwoofer and advanced surround sound features, but buyers on a budget should definitely consider this simple 2-channel soundbar. Though we've seen it drop to as low as $50 on rare occasions, it's still an excellent value at this deal price of $80. The most affordable of the Amazon Echo lineup is designed to fit into small spaces without standing out. It's available in four different colors. Echo Dot Kids (5th Gen) adds a fun owl or dragon design to the standard Echo Dot smart speaker, and it comes with a two-year warranty for accidental damage and a one year subscription to Amazon Kids+. FORT MYERS, Fla. , Nov. 22, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- A landmark in cancer treatment has come full circle, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved revumenib , a revolutionary drug for relapsed or refractory acute leukemia with a KMT2A translocation on November 15, 2024 . This life-saving therapy, first administered to a Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute, LLC (FCS) patient at its Sarasota Drug Development Unit (DDU) in 2019 as part of a Phase 1 clinical trial, is now available to patients nationwide. The very first patient to ever receive this groundbreaking treatment was referred by FCS medical oncologist/hematologist Muhammad Imam , MD to FCS Director of Drug Development Manish R. Patel , MD at the FCS Sarasota DDU, one of three early-phase clinical trial sites within the statewide practice. This milestone underscores FCS' fundamental role in the development of this drug, which has now gained FDA approval for its remarkable ability to target and treat MLL-rearranged leukemia. "This latest FDA approval of revumenib is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration—values deeply embedded in our practice's history," said FCS President & Managing Physician Lucio N. Gordan , MD . "Since treating the first patient in 2019, we've believed in the transformative potential of this therapy for leukemia patients. It's moments like these that affirm our longstanding commitment to advancing oncology care through research. This milestone not only validates that belief but also brings hope to countless individuals facing this devastating disease, reflecting the unwavering dedication of our team to improving lives." Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are rare and aggressive blood cancers often resistant to standard treatments. This new drug, specifically designed to target the genetic abnormalities driving the disease, has demonstrated exceptional efficacy in clinical trials, significantly improving remission rates and overall survival. Dr. Patel, the principal investigator for the clinical trial at FCS, shared his perspective on the approval: "Conducting this trial was an extraordinary scientific and clinical journey. We observed firsthand the profound impact this therapy had on patients who previously faced limited treatment options. The FDA's approval represents the culmination of years of rigorous research, collaborative effort, and the unwavering commitment of our team. Most importantly, it honors the bravery of the patients who participated and trusted us to pursue this innovative approach." FCS played a critical role in the clinical trial phase of the drug's development, working in collaboration with Sarah Cannon Research Institute . The FDA's approval represents years of dedicated effort from the global medical and scientific communities. With three early-phase drug development sites and 30 late-phase locations across Florida , FCS boasts one of the nation's most extensive oncology research programs. Patients benefit from access to over 180 clinical trials at any given time, with more than 600 individuals receiving cutting-edge treatments annually. Notably, the majority of new cancer drugs recently approved for use in the U.S. underwent clinical trials involving FCS' participation before gaining approval. Why NexGen Energy (NXE) is One of the Best Canadian Stocks to Buy Under $10?NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Emerance Maschmeyer turned in 34 saves on 35 shots on goal and the Ottawa Charge held off the New York Sirens 3-1 on Sunday for their second win in six games. Playing their first game in 10 days, the Charge got a first-period goal from Emily Clark and Shiann Darkangelo and Kateřina Mrázová added second-period goals to build a 3-0 lead through two periods. Ottawa has scored at least three goals in all five of its meetings with New York over two seasons. Alex Carpenter earned a third-period assist to extend her scoring streak to nine straight games dating to last season. Sarah Fillier's goal moved her into a tie for the league lead with eight points in her first eight games after being drafted No. 1 by the Sirens. Ottawa's defense neutralized much of New York's speed advantage and used a strong penalty kill to take a 1-0 lead after one period after Clark tipped home a wrist shot from the point by Brianne Jenner six minutes into the game. The Charge added two goals in the first seven minutes of the second period but could not capitalize on a pair of power plays late in the period. Fillier wasted little time getting New York on the board in the third period, firing a shot past Maschmeyer 23 seconds into the period, but the keeper saved the next dozen shots, including an almost three-minute finish when the Sirens pulled goalkeeper Corinne Schroeder to gain a player advantage. New York's Jill Saulnier was activated off long-term injured reserve following an upper body injury sustained in the opening game December 1. AP hockey: https://apnews.com/hub/hockey

Furthermore, listings on CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko have increased their visibility, raising awareness among worldwide investors and cementing their market position. Rexas Finance is currently in Stage 10 of its presale, having raised an incredible $31 million through the sale of 364 million tokens. Each RXS token is now priced at $0.15, with an expected increase to $0.175 in the next stage. Following the presale, RXS will be listed on at least three tier-1 exchanges for $0.20 per token. This anticipated offering might result in a notable immediate return for early investors. To encourage participation, Rexas Finance has launched a $1 million giveaway promotion, with 20 winners receiving $50,000 worth of RXS each. This program generates investor interest while fostering strong community engagement, which is important for the project’s success. BGB, the Bitget exchange’s native token, has been on a spectacular run, lately reaching an all-time high of $3.40. Bitget’s growing market dominance in spot and futures trading has contributed to a 545% increase in BGB over the last year. As of this report, BGB trades at $3.20, and analysts expect it will reach $5 in the medium future, bringing its market capitalization to $7 billion. Bitget’s expanding ecosystem, user base, and strategic efforts, such as Launchpool and aggressive marketing, position BGB as a major exchange token competitor. If Bitget continues to expand and dominate the market, BGB could pose a threat to Binance Coin (BNB). Long-term forecasts ithreatenas high as $74.82. As the bull market gains momentum, the altcoin market is rife with opportunities. Rexas Finance, Jasmy, Stellar, and Bitget Token stand out as frontrunners, having the potential to generate massive gains in the next few months. Rexas Finance stands out for its novel RWA tokenization technology, great presale performance, and upcoming tier-1 exchange listings. Russian food inflation remains rampant, with butter prices rising 30% since December last year. Sunflower oil and vegetables are among the other items seeing ongoing price rises. Russia's central bank last month hiked interest rates to 21% — their highest level in over 20 years — but the high rates have shown few signs of dampening inflation so far. Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied that Russia has exchanged "butter for guns," as the country's leadership has deflected blame for price rises onto "unfriendly" countries. A break-in at a small food store in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg wouldn't usually make headlines around the world, but this time was different. 24/7 San Diego news stream: Watch NBC 7 free wherever you are CCTV footage from the store, Dairy Place, in early November appears to show the door being smashed and one person rushing over to empty the cash register. The other person makes a beeline for the fridge, plundering 20kg of butter from the chiller , Russian media reported. The owner of the store said on Telegram that the heist showed butter was now like "gold," according to a Google translation. CNBC could not independently verify the footage. Dairy Place is not the only victim of butter thefts, with a recent spate of similar incidents prompting some stores to lock the product in containers. A standard 200g stick of butter now costs around 200 rubles , or almost $2, with prices up 30% since December 2023, according to data from state statistics service Rosstat. The theft of such a basic product has drawn attention to rampant price rises in Russia. "The cost of basic foods has been growing for the last three years. It is getting worse day-by-day and sped up, especially this year," Stanislav, a Moscow resident, told CNBC. Money Report European stocks set to start the week higher as global markets rally China's central bank keeps medium-term loan rate unchanged amid yuan weakness "It depends on the type of food, of course. Some prices of goods go down, for example, buckwheat. It had a higher cost in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, but now it is three times lower. But this is the single example of a price decrease. All other food prices are growing. I think it is about 10%–40% per year," he added. Russia's annual inflation rate came in at 8.5% in October, well above the central bank's target of 4%. It prompted the bank last month to raise interest rates to 21% — their highest level in over 20 years — and a further hike is expected in December. High interest rates have shown few signs of dampening price growth so far, with food inflation in particular keenly felt by shoppers. Dairy products, sunflower oil and vegetables (especially potatoes, with prices up 74% since December last year) are among the items seeing ongoing upticks in price , according to weekly data from statistics service Rosstat , as demand outstrips supply. Anton Barbashin, a Russian political analyst and editorial director of the journal Riddle, said price rises were inescapable for most citizens, telling CNBC that "literally half of all Russians spend most of their earnings on food, so they feel inflation the most." "Product inflation is now the greatest driver for inflation, as such. So prices for basic goods, food and other personal items are increasing the most," he noted. "So far, the strategy for most Russians has been to downgrade their consumption patterns, opt for lower-quality goods. Postpone any long-term purchases. However, this stress is not spread out evenly. Moscow is still barely feeling the troubles. The most hit are [people in] the smallest towns and rural areas," he noted. Inflationary pressures in Russia, and indeed throughout Europe, have been exacerbated by Moscow's ongoing war against Ukraine, with food costs rising as a result of supply and labor shortages, higher wage costs, sanctions and increased production costs. These have accompanied Russia's shift to a war-orientated economy since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with a massive increase in state defense spending and domestic production of military hardware taking priority over agricultural production. The Russian economy has fared better than expected since the start of its invasion of its neighbor, with the International Monetary Fund expecting it to grow by 3.6% this year. Russia's leadership has looked to dodge criticism for the price rises, blaming "unfriendly" countries (that is, Ukraine's allies) for the conflict, sanctions and supply shortages. Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied that Russia has exchanged "butter for guns," as he defended higher defense spending. "To say we spend too much money for guns and forget about butter — this is not so. I would like to underscore that all, exactly all the earlier announced plans of development and achievement of strategic objectives and all the social commitments assumed by the state towards the population — all of them are being performed to the full extent," Putin said at a plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club in October, TASS news agency reported . While many Russians have linked the war and inflation, it's risky for ordinary citizens to openly criticize the invasion — or "special military operation" as Moscow describes it — as any perceived "discrediting" of the army can be punished by up to five years in prison. Stanislav, who preferred not to give his surname given the risks associated with criticism of the war, said he knows that the price rises are linked to the invasion of Ukraine, but said he doesn't have "too many conversations with other people because it is dangerous to say something true in Russia." "Smart people ... understand what is happening with the economy, but most people accuse foreign 'unfriendly' countries [of being to blame for the price rises]. This official term 'unfriendly country' is often used in bills and propaganda," he said. Despite deflecting responsibility for price rises away from itself, and the war, the Kremlin has nonetheless looked to reassure the public it is acting on product shortages. Last year, a shortage of eggs — and price rises of more than 40% — prompted the government to remove import duties on the product . The administration said it would buy eggs from "friendly" countries and, in the first quarter, Russia imported 235 million eggs from Belarus, Azerbaijan and Turkey, Russian media reported. This October, the government said it would monitor butter prices and would support a "systemic increase in production" as the dairy industry continued to struggle to meet demand. Russian analyst Anton Barbashin, who no longer lives in the country, noted that Russia's propaganda machine means there is little sign of mass discontent with the government or president over stubborn inflation. "It has always been a great accomplishment of the Kremlin to separate the issue of Putin's policies and individual struggles of the Russians," he said. "Naturally, it is not a universal rule, but so far we're not seeing these struggles translate into blaming the president or the war." He said that, so far, propaganda was keeping mass dissatisfaction at bay, and some Russians just think, "it is war and war is costly." "But the speed of economic change in Russia is increasing, so we might expect [an] increase of those who want this war to end," he said. "We shouldn't also discard that [the] Kremlin is blaming Western activities and sanctions for economic issues in Russia, offering an easy target for Russians to blame." New 2025 laws hit hot topics from AI in movies to rapid-fire gunsAs the 2024 college football season nears its conclusion, NFL draft conversations are picking up steam. Mock drafts are popping up everywhere, predicting where the top players might land in April. One name to keep an eye on is Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Once a three-star recruit, according to 247 Sports , Sanders has made a name for himself this season, proving he’s among the best quarterbacks in college football. In 10 games, Sanders has thrown for 3,222 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions . Those numbers, along with his poise, arm strength, decision-making, accuracy and other attributes, have bolstered his draft stock, making him a potential top quarterback pick. Other names in contention to be the first signal caller taken include Cam Ward, Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe. On Thursday, ESPN's NFL draft expert Matt Miller released his own mock draft. However, Miller added a big twist by predicting a trade would occur and one NFC team will go "all-in" for Sanders. © Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images He thinks that team will be the New York Giants after they recently benched starting quarterback Daniel Jones . "The Giants would be going all-in for what they hope will be their quarterback of the future, as the Daniel Jones era appears to be coming to a close," Miller wrote . "He was recently benched, and with no more guaranteed money on his deal, the Giants can easily move on." Miller called Sanders the best quarterback in the class. "Sanders is the best quarterback in the 2025 class, bringing pinpoint accuracy (72.9% completion percentage), toughness in the pocket and playmaking ability that the Giants' offense has lacked," Miller added. "His ability to see the field and get the ball out with a fast release makes him ready to play right away." Miller then broke down what it would take for the Giants to move from No. 3 to No. 1 in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. "I have the Giants going big to fix their quarterback situation, giving Jacksonville their second-and third-round picks in 2025, plus a 2026 second-rounder, to move up from No. 3," Miller said. It’s still November, so there’s plenty of time for teams to shift in the draft order. If Miller's prediction holds, a connection between Sanders and Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers would be special for many years to come. The golden visa was created by the UAE government in 2019 which allows foreigners to live, work and study in the country without the need for a national sponsor and with 100 percent ownership of their business on the UAE mainland. These visas are issued for 5 or 10 years and are automatically renewed. The visa is open to investors, entrepreneurs, extraordinary talents and researchers in many disciplines of technology and knowledge, as well as extraordinary students. On January 25 , UAE scrapped the minimum down payment of Dirham one million for individuals seeking a golden visa through real estate investment.
