AP Trending SummaryBrief at 5:34 p.m. ESTSpecial counsel moves to abandon election interference and classified documents cases against TrumpMAUI – The No. 2-ranked UConn men’s basketball team dropped an overtime thriller, 99-97, to Memphis to open the Maui Invitational at the historic Lahaina Civic Center on Monday. The Huskies trailed by 12 with three minutes left in regulation, but freshman Liam McNeeley led a comeback effort and Solo Ball nailed a 3-pointer with a fraction of a second left, sending the game to overtime. Coach Dan Hurley, angry with the referees from the very beginning of the game, was called for a costly technical foul with 40 seconds left as he argued an over-the-back foul against McNeeley, and the Tigers went up four. Hassan Diarra scored eight points for the Huskies in overtime, but was forced to heave a shot at the buzzer that was off the mark. UConn is now 4-1 on the season and 9-4 all-time in the Maui Invitational. After their first loss in their last 17 games dating back to last season, the Huskies will meet the loser of Game 2 between Colorado and Michigan State on Tuesday. The tone was set early as Samson Johnson collected his first foul about 20 seconds in. It took only four minutes for the first technical to be called against UConn’s bench. The foul trouble continued as Johnson, McNeeley and Ball picked up two a piece midway through the opening half. UConn finished the game with 29 total fouls, sending Memphis to the free throw line for 40 shots. UConn struggled to operate through the physicality of Memphis’ defense, but Tarris Reed Jr. (22 points, 11 rebounds) held his own to keep UConn in the game as the Tigers started 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Jaylin Stewart, only averaging 2.8 points in 12.8 minutes per game, took advantage of his opportunity as the Huskies’ deficit grew to six. He made a 3-pointer and scored seven consecutive points, dunking to tie the game before Reed slammed another to take the lead. The first half was Adama Sanogo-esque for Reed, who went into the break with 15 points and seven rebounds. He and Stewart combined to score UConn’s final 22 points of the half, enough to keep up with Memphis’ 13-for-23 shooting from the field, 5-for-10 from beyond the arc, and knot the halftime score at 40. But UConn’s offense couldn’t keep up in the second half. Ball started UConn’s scoring with a 3-pointer, but it was more than four scoreless minutes before Karaban made his third triple of the game to quell a 5-0 Memphis run. Stewart reentered and almost immediately slammed a putback dunk off a McNeeley miss with 14 minutes to go, tying the game back up at 48. Stewart didn’t score again, however, and finished the game with 16 points and five boards. The Huskies started the second half just 3-for-10 from the field in the second half before Hunter and Mahaney traded triples and Karaban hit all three from the line after he was fouled on a 3-point attempt, tying the score for the 11th time. But the shots didn’t stop falling for Memphis. Hunter, 7 for his first 10 3-pointers, hit one from the corner while drawing the fourth foul on Mahaney and converted the four-point play. He was good again from beyond the arc 30 seconds later, pushing Memphis’ lead to 10 points with 8:09 left in the game. Memphis’ lead grew to 13 before Karaban’s fourth triple of the game with 3:37 left. Reed dunked twice to keep the game from getting out of hand, but fouled out with about three minutes left. McNeeley, quiet with just two points through the game’s first 37 and a half minutes, nailed back-to-back 3-pointers and cut the Huskies’ deficit to four with 1:38 to go. The Huskies forced a turnover down three with 14 seconds left, and Ball sent the game to overtime with a 3-pointer just before the buzzer. Johnson fouled out with a technical foul in the overtime period and finished with just two points, and Ball fouled out with 13 seconds left in overtime.
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball switched a pair of series involving the Tampa Bay Rays to the first two months of the season in an attempt to avoid summer rain at open-air Steinbrenner Field, their temporary home following damage to Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay is scheduled to play 19 of its first 22 games at home and 37 of 54 through May 28, then play 64 of its last 108 games on the road. The Rays are home for eight games each in July and August. A series scheduled at the Los Angeles Angels from April 7-9 will instead be played at Tampa, Florida, from April 8-10, MLB said Monday. The second series between the teams will be played at Anaheim, California, from Aug. 4-6 instead of at St. Petersburg, Florida, from Aug. 5-7. Minnesota's first series against the Rays will be played at Steinbrenner Field from May 26-28 and the Twins' second will be at Target Field in Minneapolis from July 4-6. Tampa Bay heads into the All-Star break with a 10-game trip to Minnesota, Detroit and Boston, and has a 12-game trip to the Angels, Seattle, Oakland and San Francisco from Aug. 4-17. Tropicana Field, the Rays’ home since the team started play in 1998, was heavily damaged by Hurricane Milton on Oct. 9 , with most of its fabric roof shredded. The Rays cannot return to the Trop until 2026 at the earliest, if at all. Tampa's average monthly rainfall from 1991 to 2020 was 2.25 inches in April and 2.60 in May , according to the National Weather Service, then rose to 7.37 in June , 7.75 in July and 9.03 in August before falling to 6.09 in September . The Class A Tampa Tarpons, the usual team at Steinbrenner Field, had six home postponements, two cancellations and four suspended games this year from June 21 through their season finale on Sept. 8. The Rays are now scheduled to play their first six games at home against Colorado and Pittsburgh, go to Texas for a three-game series, then return for a 13-game homestand against the Angels, Atlanta, Boston and the New York Yankees. The Tarpons will play their home games on a back field. AP MLB: https://apnews.com/Manitoba’s next generation of politicians are optimistic for change despite global turmoil. Members of Youth Parliament of Manitoba, a simulated government that gives youth a taste of politics, say young people need to be politically engaged now more than ever. “It’s not productive to not be optimistic and to wallow or grieve democracy,” said Edlynne Paez, parliamentary secretary to labour. “Instead, we should be celebrating and pushing for the wins we do get.” MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS “It’s not productive to not be optimistic and to wallow or grieve democracy,” said Edlynne Paez, parliamentary secretary to labour. Youth need more opportunities to get involved in politics and have face time with the government, said Paez, 17. “We live in a digital age, and it’s so easy to find radicalized opinions and fall into a viewpoint that’s completely biased,” she said, adding that more needs to be done to encourage youngsters to question the things they see online. Friday marked the second day of the 103rd youth parliament session, with more than 90 members, all under the age of 25. Mathew Sévigny, minister of government services, said he sees political education shortcomings and misinformation as damaging to democracy. “The work I do, and the work people here do in this organization is helping to build an informed community of young people that will help keep democracy alive and flourishing,” said Sévigny, 19, who’s been in youth parliament for four years. He said more politicians are using personal attacks to win voters instead of putting policy forward and that youth are tired of slander and negativity in political strategies. Deputy speaker Charlize Medina said youth are motivated to make change and get involved with a possible no-confidence vote on the horizon in Ottawa and Donald Trump returning to presidential office in the U.S. next year. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. Medina said it’s not always easy. “Youth feel disappointed in the state of affairs. They feel like there’s no way for them to make change because they’re so young,” said Medina, 22. She was never interested in politics until a teacher told her about youth parliament. She said the opportunity to see how the government functioned up-close was “mind-blowing” and encourages politicians to address issues important to young people, like climate change. Youth parliament will debate bills from Dec. 26-31 before members vote on them. fpcity@freepress.mb.ca Advertisement Advertisement
The Reform UK leader pushed back against reports suggesting that legal action would be the next step, saying he would make a decision in the next couple of days about his response if there is no apology for the “crazy conspiracy theory”. Mr Farage also said the party has “opened up our systems” to media outlets, including The Daily Telegraph and The Financial Times, in the interests of “full transparency to verify that our numbers are correct”. His remarks came after Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accused Mr Farage of “fakery” in response to Reform claiming they had surpassed the Tories in signed-up members. Mrs Badenoch said Reform’s counter was “coded to tick up automatically”. A digital counter on the Reform website showed a membership tally before lunchtime on Boxing Day ticking past the 131,680 figure declared by the Conservative Party during its leadership election earlier this year. Mr Farage, on whether he was threatening legal action or not, told the PA news agency: “I haven’t threatened anything. I’ve just said that unless I get an apology, I will take some action. “I haven’t said whether it’s legal or anything.” He added: “All I’ve said is I want an apology. If I don’t get an apology, I will take action. “I will decide in the next couple of days what that is. So I’ve not specified what it is.” Mr Farage, on the move to make membership data available to media organisations, said: “We feel our arguments are fully validated. “She (Mrs Badenoch) has put out this crazy conspiracy theory and she needs to apologise.” The accusations of fraud and dishonesty made against me yesterday were disgraceful. Today we opened up our systems to The Telegraph, Spectator, Sky News & FT in the interests of full transparency to verify that our data is correct. I am now demanding @KemiBadenoch apologises. — Nigel Farage MP (@Nigel_Farage) December 27, 2024 On why Mrs Badenoch had reacted as she did, Mr Farage said: “I would imagine she was at home without anybody advising her and was just angry.” Mr Farage, in a statement issued on social media site X, also said: “The accusations of fraud and dishonesty made against me yesterday were disgraceful. “Today we opened up our systems to The Telegraph, Spectator, Sky News and FT in the interests of full transparency to verify that our data is correct. “I am now demanding Kemi Badenoch apologises.” A Conservative Party source claimed Mr Farage was “rattled” that his Boxing Day “publicity stunt is facing serious questions”. They added: “Like most normal people around the UK, Kemi is enjoying Christmas with her family and looking forward to taking on the challenges of renewing the Conservative Party in the New Year.” Mrs Badenoch, in a series of messages posted on X on Thursday, said: “Farage doesn’t understand the digital age. This kind of fakery gets found out pretty quickly, although not before many are fooled.” There were 131,680 Conservative members eligible to vote during the party’s leadership election to replace Rishi Sunak in the autumn. Mrs Badenoch claimed in her thread that “the Conservative Party has gained thousands of new members since the leadership election”. Elsewhere, Mr Farage described Elon Musk as a “bloody hero” and said he believes the US billionaire can help attract younger voters to Reform. Tech entrepreneur Mr Musk met Mr Farage earlier this month at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, amid rumours of a possible donation to either Mr Farage or Reform. Mr Farage told The Daily Telegraph newspaper: “The shades, the bomber jacket, the whole vibe. Elon makes us cool – Elon is a huge help to us with the young generation, and that will be the case going on and, frankly, that’s only just starting. “Reform only wins the next election if it gets the youth vote. The youth vote is the key. Of course, you need voters of all ages, but if you get a wave of youth enthusiasm you can change everything. “And I think we’re beginning to get into that zone – we were anyway, but Elon makes the whole task much, much easier. And the idea that politics can be cool, politics can be fun, politics can be real – Elon helps us with that mission enormously.”Trump 2.0 has a Cabinet and executive branch of different ideas and eclectic personalities
Special counsel moves to abandon election interference and classified documents cases against TrumpWithout Jalen Hurts at QB, Eagles bid to wrap up NFC East vs. CowboysStocks jumped at Monday's open and bond yields retreated as markets welcomed President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Scott Bessent to be his Treasury secretary. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a new all-time high and the S&P 500 hit a new intraday high early in the opening session of a holiday-shortened week highlighted by a packed economic calendar. In a Friday evening post on Truth Social , Trump described Bessent, the former chief investment strategist of Soros Fund Management, as "one of the world's foremost international investors and geopolitical and economic strategists." The president-elect added, "Scott's story is that of the American Dream." Bessent is also the co-founder of Key Square Group, a macro-focused investment firm that specializes in analyzing economic, political and market conditions to trade across asset classes, including currencies and interest rates as well as commodities and stocks. Profit and prosper with the best of expert advice - straight to your e-mail. Wall Street is positive about Bessent because of his success as an investor and for the moderating influence he is expected to exert within the Trump administration. In a November 15 op-ed for Fox News on the subject of Trump's primary tool of economic policy, Bessent writes, "The truth is that tariffs have a long and storied history as both a revenue-raising tool and a way of protecting strategically important industries in the U.S. President-elect Trump has added a third leg to the stool: tariffs as a negotiating tool with our trading partners." "The nomination of Scott Bessent to be U.S. Treasury Secretary has been a catalyst for lower bond yields, higher equity indices and a weaker dollar this morning," writes Kit Juckes , chief forex strategist at Societe Generale. The nomination is a palliative for investors "worried about the size of the U.S. budget deficit and the inflationary impact of tariffs. Whether he can help get the U.S. to 3% GDP growth and a 3% budget deficit time will tell, but for now, he has changed the market mood, if nothing else," Juckes concludes. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note declined by 15 basis points to 4.27%, while the yield on the 2-year dipped 10 basis points to 4.27%. The Dow backed off its intraday high but still closed at a record level, rising 1% to 44,736. The S&P 500 also slipped from its intraday high but held on for a 0.3% gain to 5,987. The Nasdaq Composite , meanwhile, edged up 0.3% to 19,054. Stocks on the move Earnings season is nearing an end, with 95% of the S&P 500 having reported so far. FactSet Senior Earnings Analyst John Butters notes that with numbers from 462 of the firms in the index, 75% have reported positive earnings per share (EPS) surprises and 61% have reported positive revenue surprises. "For Q3 2024," Butters writes, "the blended (year-over-year) earnings growth rate for the S&P 500 is 5.8%. If 5.8% is the actual growth rate for the quarter, it will mark the 5th straight quarter of year-over-year earnings growth for the index." Bath & Body Works ( BBWI ) was deleted from S&P 500 on October 1, but the stock surged 16.5% after the specialty retailer beat top- and bottom-line expectations for its third quarter and raised its full-year outlook. "Our strong results exceeded the high end of our net sales and earnings per diluted share guidance," said Bath & Body Works CEO Gina Boswell in a statement. "As a result, we are raising our full-year guidance to fully reflect this outperformance." Wall Street remains optimistic about BBWI. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence , the consensus recommendation is Buy, and the average 12-month price target for the consumer discretionary stock is $42.76. Even after Monday's strong showing that's about 20% upside. Macy's ( M ) stock, which was removed from the S&P 500 in April 2020, fell 2.3% after the retailer announced preliminary results for its third quarter, during which sales declined 2.4% year over year. Macy's also announced a delay in filing its quarterly statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after management "identified an issue related to delivery expenses in one of its accrual accounts." Macy's determined a single employee "intentionally made erroneous accounting accrual entries to hide approximately $132 to $154 million of cumulative delivery expenses." The big picture remains murky for the iconic retailer. "It has major disadvantages vs peers around price, product, and service," writes UBS Global Research analyst Jay Sole in a November 18 note. "We believe these dynamics should lead to continuous net losses. M's current stock price does not reflect long-term earnings-per-share challenges, in our view." Incoming data With third-quarter earnings season winding down, investors have a packed economic calendar to capture their attention this week. Note that markets will be closed on Thursday and will shut down early on Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Tuesday's releases include the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Indices at 9 am Eastern time as well as a consumer confidence survey from The Conference Board and new home sales data from the Census Bureau at 10 am. The Federal Reserve will publish the minutes from the November FOMC meeting at 2 pm. And it's a particularly big Wednesday, with initial jobless claims coming in a day early because of the holiday on Thursday. We'll also see data on durable goods orders, retail and wholesale inventories, the U.S. trade balance and the second read on third-quarter GDP. The main event is the release of the Personal Consumption and Expenditures Price Index (PCE) series at 10 am. PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation . "Based on the depth and breadth of the transitions in progress at this time in monetary policy, on Capitol Hill and in the change of Administration along with what appears to be a watershed period in technological innovation, some market participants can't help but wonder if they should be adjusting their portfolio exposures for a myriad of outcomes espoused by various market pundits with widely divergent views and opinions," writes John Stoltzfus of Oppenheimer Asset Management. "For one, while the pace of inflation appears to be slowing enabling the Fed to move towards more rate cuts in the months ahead," Stoltzfus observes, "the latest CPI numbers showed some inflation stickiness that has proved irksome to those with great expectations for more frequent and deeper interest rate cuts." According to the CME FedWatch tool, as of Monday afternoon, there is a 55.9% chance the Federal Open Market Committee cuts the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points at its December 18 meeting. Trump 2.0 has a Cabinet and executive branch of different ideas and eclectic personalitiesAPM Terminals’ target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is moving closer for our terminals in Spain, as the Barcelona terminal celebrates the arrival of its first electric straddle carriers on Monday. These carriers will also be the first of their kind in the Mediterranean. In total, five electric straddle carriers will be rolled out in Barcelona as part of APM Terminals’ $60 million global electrification pilot to reduce emissions. “Our celebration today underlines our long-term commitment as a terminal operator to Barcelona and to Spain. The modernisation we do here goes hand in hand with our global industry-leading target of net zero by 2040, and Barcelona is a prime example as one of the pilots showing the way with electric equipment. We see a huge potential in further developing our terminals in connection with the overall logistics infrastructure,” says Julián Fernandez, CEO of Spanish Gateways in APM Terminals. The project in Barcelona has been supported by approximately €3 million by the Spanish Government. Within a year, plans on paper are being transformed to action as the port is getting ready for the first phase of testing. This is being done along with setting up charging stations and implementing the technology required to operate. José Alberto Carbonell, President of Port de Barcelona “The commissioning of the first five electric straddle carriers at APM Terminals Barcelona demonstrates the Port Community’s firm commitment to our decarbonisation objectives. I would like to highlight the efforts made by the port’s companies and professionals to efficiently reduce our impact on the environment, and I would like to thank APM Terminals for choosing Barcelona to lead this important global project for the effective decarbonization of maritime port activity. The Port of Barcelona is on track to reduce its CO2-emissions by half by 2030 and to be carbon neutral by 2050. To achieve this, we are making progress in the port’s energy transition, with projects such as the Nexigen plan for the electrification of quays, the production of renewable energies, and the promotion of transition fuels and future zero-emission fuels,” adds José Alberto Carbonell, President of Port de Barcelona. The pilot and testing of equipment taking place in Barcelona happens in cooperation with Konecranes and ZPMC. “Konecranes is proud to partner with APM Terminals Barcelona to contribute to achieving their global industry-leading target with our four battery-powered Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers and automated charging stations. These innovations support eco-efficient operations and set new standards in decarbonisation. Konecranes is driving the shift to sustainable technologies with our Ecolifting ideology, focusing on zero tailpipe emission solutions,” says Peter Kania, Sales Director of Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers. Julián Fernández, CEO of Spanish Gateways in APM Terminals When APM Terminals kicked off its global pilot program for electrification, Barcelona was one of the five hand-picked terminals to participate. Currently, battery-electric equipment has been piloted in Jordan, Egypt and now Spain. And the pilots build a solid foundation for the next steps: from piloting to implementing the global decarbonisation strategy with battery-electric at center and with expert experience and know-how from our operators, who have been trained as part of the program. The new electric straddle carrier (right) next to its diesel predecessor – and a quick look at how it reduces noise and greenhouse gas emissions. “From our operators’ hands-on experiences, it has become evident that some of the upsides – in addition to the lower emissions – are better air quality and working environment – both for our colleagues working with the equipment, and for our neighbors around the port area. The feedback we get is that electric equipment provides a quieter and smoother ride, and more precise handling. Instant torque makes lifting more effortless, while reduced vibrations and simpler maintenance make for a more comfortable and efficient workday,” says Sahar Rashidbeigi, Head of Decarbonisation, APM Terminals. Pier 400 in Los Angeles is next in line in the pilot programme, and our new-build terminals in Rijeka and Suape – starting operations in 2025 and 2026, respectively – are both fully equipped with electric terminal equipment. Greenhouse gas emissions in the terminals come predominantly from diesel equipment. In 2023, APM Terminals became one of the founding members of the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA), an industry group that is collectively calling for action to accelerate port decarbonisation by making battery-electric CHE affordable and accessible within this decade. The new electric straddle carrier (right) next to its diesel predecessor – and a quick look at how it reduces noise and greenhouse gas emissions. “It’s remarkable to think that just 12 months ago, we launched ZEPA, and in that time, we’ve completed some crucial work across demand, standardisation, and enabling infrastructure. That said, our goal remains to further close the price and performance gap, especially for straddle carriers. Alongside efforts like ZEPA, taking real action – such as this pilot with early-stage assets – is a vital step in that direction,” added Rashidbeigi. Source: APM Terminals
