In 2024, global energy investment is set to exceed US$3 trillion, with US$2 trillion going to clean energy technologies and infrastructure. Spending on renewable power, grids and storage is now higher than total spending on oil, gas and coal, with clean energy employment surpassing that of fossil fuels globally in 2021. Creating a combined energy and climate ministry reflects an important fact: climate and energy are two sides of the same coin. Similarly, the creation of the new ministry of mines and critical minerals acknowledges the province’s mineral wealth and ability to both mine and process these materials in B.C. Helping meet clean-energy-driven demand for critical minerals is a major economic opportunity for the province. Indeed, the global battery market is set to triple in size from US$120 billion in 2023 to US$330 billion in 2030. What’s yet to come, however, are the minister’s mandate letters that will spell out the government’s detailed agenda. It will be tempting to look south of the border at the incoming Trump administration and the political winds of change blowing here in Canada as indicators of where the global economy is headed. But the Eby government must not lose sight of the global picture, where countries around the world are accelerating the deployment of clean energy and technologies. In fact, even the incoming Trump administration is being lobbied by the automotive and fossil fuel industries to keep the U.S. in the Paris Climate Agreement and maintain U.S. President Joe Biden’s clean energy tax credits and EV incentives. Combine this pressure with state-led leadership from California and others, and it’s unclear whether “drill, baby, drill” will indeed become the U.S.’s prevailing economic narrative. Fortunately, the Eby government took some bold first steps in its previous mandate to align B.C.’s economy with this new reality. During his two years as premier, Eby has taken the province’s clean energy future seriously, implementing a number of important changes , such as increasing energy infrastructure investments and providing a credible vision for how the province can best leverage its clean energy advantages. What’s required now is largely the implementation of Eby’s first-term commitments, including the development of an oil and gas emissions cap and support for household clean technologies that help drive down both home energy bills and emissions (often adding cooling to homes that now need it). The new government also needs an action plan to implement the government’s energy strategy, Powering Our Future , to ensure B.C. has sufficient clean electricity for the years ahead. It should prioritize streamlining permitting and regulatory processes for clean energy projects while advancing Indigenous reconciliation and environmental protection. B.C. is poised to prosper. The province’s clean technology sector — currently home to seven of the world’s 100 most promising cleantech firms — will be in high demand as the global market for solar, wind, EVs, batteries, electrolysers and heat pumps is set to rise from US$700 billion in 2023 to more than US$2 trillion by 2035, which is close to the value of the world’s crude oil market in recent years. This, again, is where the world is headed even without further speeding up the clean energy transition. What’s more, analysis from Clean Energy Canada shows that, in a world where Canada and B.C. remain on track to net zero by 2050, over 400,000 clean energy jobs would be created in the province, up from some 83,000 in 2025, representing an annual growth rate of six per cent. Eby has set the province on a path to an affordable, prosperous future, but the journey has only just started. Developments south of the border provide an opportunity for B.C. to step up and fully align its economy with where the global market is headed. (3) To ensure the rights and freedom of the media workers (4) To define and set up responsibilities, ethics, discipline and best practices of media personnel. (5) To fulfil the rights of every citizen for information access. (6) To act as a mediator between the complainant and media entity to peacefully resolve the dispute. We are here to evaluate how many of these objectives are being met and assess what could be the future of media going forward in the country. Know Yourself Know the Other Side Based on how things stand right now, freedom of expression could possibly be seen as the concept of the past. And it is definitely not brought about by the government. False accusations, fake news, fallacious allegations, fictitious accounts of stories and false-hearted social punishments have propelled many into beliefs that press freedom is secondary to peace, stability and development and that Myanmar people do not deserve the freedom of expression at this very moment. Many countries have prospered and stood tall, despite the apparent lack of freedom of the press; Singapore, Vietnam, China, and Malaysia just to name a few. Sun Tzu’s famous words of wisdom started with, ‘Know yourself, know the other side and you will not be defeated’. The strength of the country is embedded within but not appropriately extracted; we have a relatively young population, but their youthfulness and zeal are mainly being exploited in Thailand. We have lots of precious hardwood trees, but revenues from their sale are heading towards the EAOs and smugglers who ship the hardwood out of border areas or via the sea to buyers in Port Klang, Malaysia. We are the third largest exporter of rare earth to China, according to US intelligence, but the income from these is going to a country within the country of the Wa Self-Administered Division, with no sharing with the rest of the state. The Press Council’s performance was so brilliant that the Ministry of Information decided to form a brand-new Media Development Department, when the task of media development falls under the purview of the Press Council, as distinctly obvious under the Media Law. The priority given to digital media was also so spot-on that another superfluous association came into existence: the Digital Media Association. That all happened in the past three years. The Council has had a chance to make its mark on history and clearly it did (Not), based on these dazzling results. With the priorities all wrong, how could it possibly act as the preserver of the fourth estate in the nation’s building? How do we give press freedom when there are no accompanying responsibilities, ethics and discipline do not exist in news and media personnel, especially those who hang out pushing falsehoods online. How can these actions go unpunished ever? When these perpetrators hide behind anonymous servers and overseas sets up, funded by foreign countries, how do we go for peaceful resolution of disputes? The legal environment is in shatters as the law-and-order situation is heading south compared to a decade ago, including increased corruption in the judiciary branch. Climate change and environmental upheavals are making it difficult for the country to upgrade the software of its people, including the media development as resources get diverted to rescue, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. Political circumstances are such that any hint of limitless press freedom could result in political instability and possible disruption to the upcoming 2025 general election timetable. The economic situation is not helping either. As the President of UMFCCI would say, ‘If you remove the issue of imports and exchange rates, Myanmar is still a good country to invest in’. Yet the statistics have proven on the contrary. Even these two circumstances present the media with challenges. Reporting the factual economic news becomes a predicament. How do we express the truth and facts, without being caught in an awkward situation with the government? If the facts were not disclosed and the truth was concealed, how would the government get the national development strategy right? Socially, the country is divided. Some persons believed in almost everything the fake news agencies posted. At least half of the population doubt whatever the government say. The reactive approach to fake news is not helping either. Mark Twain famously said in 1924, “A lie can travel around the world and back again, while the truth is lacing up its boots”. Another thumbs down for us is the lack of civility and courtesy on online platforms. There is no self-policing among ourselves. Those who try to inject an ounce of truth and politeness were singled out and fired upon by trolls, causing many of them to stay away from social media for health and psychological reasons. Technologically, we are already at the back end of ASEAN. While our IT talents are breaking their backs on Thai, Malaysian and Singapore companies, we are still struggling to decide when to turn on our VPNs, when to shut them off and when to get a free VPN app. More than 90 per cent of our population do not know how to use basic applications other than Facebook. For example, a significant portion of the corporate staff do not know how to use Google Maps and how to share locations. With the headwinds going so strong in the upstream journey, what could be our media strategy for the company years? We can all start with the six actionable steps to bring us closer to the original six objectives. (1) Stop forming duplicate entities, departments and associations. Focus all the resources on one Press Council, which should be renamed as the ‘Media Council’ to encompass all, especially the digital media. (2) Let the young people with brilliant minds, who would be willing to take risks for the nation’s media development, take the lead in this evolution. (3) Together with all the stakeholders, we need to develop a mission and a strategy to defeat fake news. The current approaches definitely need a step up. (4) Law and order and effective enforcement. Needless to say, without tough enforcement actions that follow, the agencies that act for the government would remain like lame ducks. (5) There are many reasons to delay, postpone and put off actions. But none of these help in bringing the nation forward. Even having a small or online event is undoubtedly better than holding no events at all. (6) Finally, stop rewarding people for doing nothing and just wasting government budgets. The future is bright! The future is orange! The future is ours to make.

The American company, HyProMag, has completed a feasibility study for the construction of a US$125 million magnet recycling plant in Dallas Fort Worth, Texas. HyProMag has been commercializing a process for recycling magnets -- Hydrogen Processing of Magnet Scrap (HPMS) -- developed by the University of Birmingham Magnetic Materials Group. HyProMag is owned by Maginito Ltd . – subsidiary of two B.C. headquartered companies, CoTec Holdings Corp. (TSX-V:CTH, OTCQB:CTHCF) and Mkango Resources Ltd. (TSX-V:MKA, AIM:MKA). In a feasibility study released today, CoTec revealed plans for a recycling plant in Texas that would produce “permanent magnets” from e-waste – mainly from hard drive discs from computers. Recycling critical minerals, including rare earths and magnet metals, is becoming a security issue for the U.S., Europe and other Western countries and allied nations. “The Chinese have been taking steps recently to restrict various strategic materials,” CoTec CEO Julian Treger told BIV News. “Most recently the Russians have done something on uranium. And it’s just a matter of time before there are further restrictions on rare earths magnets. And they are crucial not only for strategic purposes such as night goggles and ballistic missile guidance systems, but also for drones, robots and super necessary in the hard drives that power AI. So, sooner or later, the ability to generate a domestic recycled supply of these materials is going to be very, very valuable.” The proposed Texas plant would produce 750 metric tonnes annually of recycled neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) – otherwise known as permanent magnets -- over a 40 year operating life, according to the feasibility study. Given the national security concerns over securing domestic supplies of critical minerals and materials, the companies will be looking for grants from the American government to help build the plant Treger said. “We’re also going button down the feedstock supply, and we’re engaging with a number of people in the U.S. industry who can supply us with the waste that we need. And then there are a number of people who want to be customers. All of that needs to be buttoned down before we move to the financing phase. Obviously that will depend on how successful we are in obtaining grants.” CoTec is focused on identifying and acquiring mineral recovery technology. CoTec’s senior management includes former executives and engineers from major mining companies like Rio Tinto and Anglo Pacific Group Plc, and its board of directors includes Bob Harward -- a retired U.S. Navy Vice Admiral and former Deputy Commander of the United States Central Command. “We, as CoTec, have looked at 400 technologies,” Treger said. “We’ve invested in six, so far. We are very picky about things that are really category killers and really move the needle and are disruptive.” “It’s an attempt to invent the 21 st Century responsible commodity extraction business – super green, very low carbon, low cost – and finally deploying the disruptive technologies which are out there (but) which the major mining companies haven’t done so far because of inertia,” Treger said. Making permanent magnets from neodymium, iron and boron is a complex, painstaking process, Treger said. The HyProMag process extracts the NdFeB from spent magnets, rendering them into a powder and then uses a process for reconstituting the magnets in what Teger describes as a “short-looped process.” “We don’t process the individual elements – we just recycle the mix,” Treger said. “It’s a way for the West to basically use its embedded, vast historic supply of magnets in a really strategic way to be much more self-sufficient, which is why it’s obviously of great interest to the U.S. and the Defence sector. “The short-looped process is a short-cut getting these things made and produced, whereas most other recycling opportunities I see are looking to recycle the individual elements of the rare earths, which is very, very difficult thing to do.” Other technologies the company has invested in include copper and iron extraction from copper and iron mine waste. One of the companies CoTec has invested in is Ceibo, which developed a copper recovery technology that Glencore recently announced it will be using at the Lomas Bayas copper mine in Chile.
