But alongside his stark warning of the threats facing Britain and its allies, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said there would be only a “remote chance” Russia would directly attack or invade the UK if the two countries were at war. The Chief of the Defence Staff laid out the landscape of British defence in a wide-ranging speech, after a minister warned the Army would be wiped out in as little as six months if forced to fight a war on the scale of the Ukraine conflict. The admiral cast doubt on the possibility as he gave a speech at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) defence think tank in London. He told the audience Britain needed to be “clear-eyed in our assessment” of the threats it faces, adding: “That includes recognising that there is only a remote chance of a significant direct attack or invasion by Russia on the United Kingdom, and that’s the same for the whole of Nato.” Moscow “knows the response will be overwhelming”, he added, but warned the nuclear deterrent needed to be “kept strong and strengthened”. Sir Tony added: “We are at the dawn of a third nuclear age, which is altogether more complex. It is defined by multiple and concurrent dilemmas, proliferating nuclear and disruptive technologies and the almost total absence of the security architectures that went before.” He listed the “wild threats of tactical nuclear use” by Russia, China building up its weapon stocks, Iran’s failure to co-operate with a nuclear deal, and North Korea’s “erratic behaviour” among the threats faced by the West. But Sir Tony said the UK’s nuclear arsenal is “the one part of our inventory of which Russia is most aware and has more impact on (President Vladimir) Putin than anything else”. Successive British governments had invested “substantial sums of money” in renewing nuclear submarines and warheads because of this, he added. The admiral described the deployment of thousands of North Korean soldiers on Ukraine’s border alongside Russian forces as the year’s “most extraordinary development”. He also signalled further deployments were possible, speaking of “tens of thousands more to follow as part of a new security pact with Russia”. Defence minister Alistair Carns earlier said a rate of casualties similar to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would lead to the army being “expended” within six to 12 months. He said it illustrated the need to “generate depth and mass rapidly in the event of a crisis”. In comments reported by Sky News, Mr Carns, a former Royal Marines colonel, said Russia was suffering losses of around 1,500 soldiers killed or injured a day. “In a war of scale – not a limited intervention, but one similar to Ukraine – our Army for example, on the current casualty rates, would be expended – as part of a broader multinational coalition – in six months to a year,” Mr Carns said in a speech at Rusi. He added: “That doesn’t mean we need a bigger Army, but it does mean you need to generate depth and mass rapidly in the event of a crisis.” Official figures show the Army had 109,245 personnel on October 1, including 25,814 volunteer reservists. Mr Carns, the minister for veterans and people, said the UK needed to “catch up with Nato allies” to place greater emphasis on the reserves. The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said Defence Secretary John Healey had previously spoken about “the state of the armed forces that were inherited from the previous government”. The spokesman said: “It’s why the Budget invested billions of pounds into defence, it’s why we’re undertaking a strategic defence review to ensure that we have the capabilities and the investment needed to defend this country.”This was the third Christmas since I lost my Dad. My Dad was the social planner of our family and he made every holiday so special. Christmas hadn't felt right since he left us to go be with Jesus. This year I was looking forward to a bit of Christmas magic. My son is a firefighter and was off this Christmas. He has met a lovely young lady who he will will likely marry soon and my younger daughter had finished her first semester of college successfully. I was happy with the gifts I had carefully selected and was really excited about Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. On Sunday, December 22nd, reality ruined my best laid plans. Hey friends. For those of you who pray, please add my mom Priscilla to your prayer list. She started feeling very off yesterday and I took her to the ER. Her hemoglobin was 5.5. She received two units of blood and it was slightly higher today. They are doing a procedure on... pic.twitter.com/MQglSRWVdQ My mom woke up feeling very weak. She could barely walk to our car. We arrived at the ER to discover her hemoglobin was incredibly low, so low they ran her labs twice. Obviously, she was bleeding internally somewhere. We spent the next few days in the hospital trying to come to terms with various diagnosis. The highest paid people in this hospital (docs and nurses) all seem miserable with the worst bedside manner but the people making the least, housekeepers and nutrition, are so kind and full of joy. It’s the strangest phenomenon. During that time, it was most often the nutritional team and the housekeeping staff who kept our spirits up. They were making the least amount of money, but seemed to understand families in the hospital are just as sad as the people who have to leave their loved ones and come work in the hospital over the holidays. One young man in the hospital cafeteria on Christmas morning boosted my mood for the rest of the day with his kind words and big smile. He wanted to be home with this family, I'm sure, and I wanted my family member home, but he shared humanity with me. We’ve got the world’s smallest Christmas tree and the stockings are hung by the IV with care... and yes, they were knitted by Miss E. pic.twitter.com/UCtaiDuDdx Miss E went into the hospital three weeks ago today, and is still stubbornly hanging on. Meanwhile, oldest son called me this morning to tell me he hit a deer driving back from the hospital last night. Thankfully he’s okay, but his car is probably totaled. Haven’t said it for... Dear friends, I’ll follow up with a proper Christmas salutation from Iron Will, but in the meantime, I’m humbling requesting your prayers. As you know, my mother has Alzheimer’s. And has been fighting valiantly for a long while. But she is nearing her well-earned final rest.... pic.twitter.com/3yAh6bXUuM Wallowing low in my 'woe is me' over our ruined Christmas, I scanned Twitter. I quickly found we were far from the only family spending a sad Christmas in the hospital and many families wouldn't bring their loved one home as I did. Christmas evening, my Mom was stable enough to come home. We received her biopsy results yesterday and her tumor is not cancerous as Doctors had feared. Hi friends! Thank you for all of your prayers. We received good news today. pic.twitter.com/FNgMUCbfFr My mom will need an additional surgery, albeit one without incisions, thankfully, but all in all, this was the best news we could receive. Yes, I missed spending the day with my children, but my extended family loved on them well for me. my family is sending me pics of my kids so I can kind of share their Christmas and it makes my heart happy pic.twitter.com/4pCZORvnMV If this Christmas did not go as planned for you, know you are not alone. Christmas is about a Savior that came to redeem us from all the heartache the world offers us. Thank you to all who prayed for my Mother and know our Risen Savior is closest in our heartache. The King seemed amused as he laughed at British comedian Matt Forde’s impression of President-elect Donald Trump on the stage of the Royal Variety Performance. Charles attended the show at the Royal Albert Hall in London for the first time as patron of the Royal Variety charity, following in the footsteps of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. In a statement from Buckingham Palace, he said: “The charity’s crucial work in assisting those who have fallen ill, had an accident or hit hard times is as essential now as it ever has been. “I would like to thank all of those who have worked so hard to stage this year’s production and wish everyone a very enjoyable evening.” The performance saw political comic Forde reference the unfounded claims Mr Trump repeated during his presidential debate against Democrat candidate Kamala Harris earlier this year, that illegal immigrants from Haiti were eating locals’ pets in the small Ohio city of Springfield. Forde exclaimed in the president-elect’s voice: “They’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs!” He then turned to address Charles from the stage, saying in Mr Trump’s voice: “Your Majesty King Charles, you’re named after a spaniel – be very careful, they’ll eat you alive.” The King was seen laughing in response to the joke from the royal box. Charles appeared at the event without the Queen, who insisted the “show must go on” after pulling out of attending the performance on Friday evening as doctors advised that she should prioritise rest. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “Following a recent chest infection, the Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms, as a result of which doctors have advised that, after a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritise sufficient rest. “With great regret, she has therefore withdrawn from attendance at tonight’s Royal Variety Performance. His Majesty will attend as planned.” A royal source said the Queen was “naturally disappointed to miss the evening’s entertainments and sends her sincere apologies to all those involved, but is a great believer that ‘the show must go on'”. “She hopes to be back to full strength and regular public duties very soon,” the source added. The Royal Variety Performance will air on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player in December. Money raised from the show will go to help people from the world of entertainment in need of care and assistance, with the Royal Variety Charity launching an initiative to help those with mental health issues this year.

After being offered by Texas A&M in June, A&M Consolidated kicker Colton Chmelar immediately knew that’s where he wanted to spend the next four years. Chmelar made it official by putting pen to paper as he signed with the hometown Aggies as a preferred walk-on Wednesday afternoon as part of early signing day inside Consol’s Auditorium. “It was a dream for a long time to play Division I football and especially at Texas A&M,” Chmelar said. “For the longest time I thought I was going to play soccer until I learned I could kick a football, and so I kind of worked hard and tried to work on my craft and get better every day, so then I found out I was going to get an opportunity to play at Texas A&M [and] I was like. 'how am I going to pass that up.'” Fittingly, the two-sport athlete got to sign alongside soccer teammate and best friend Ross Versari as they were the only two athletes to take part in a signing day ceremony locally on Wednesday. “Man, it felt amazing,” Versari said. “Long time coming, been dreaming about this for forever you know. And so, it’s a dream come true for me.” Versari, Consol’s goalkeeper, signed with Division II University of Texas at Dallas back in late November but was also celebrated on Wednesday. “It was incredible,” Versari said. “One of the best feelings of my life seeing the auditorium completely filled up. And I mean it was a great feeling to be able to share the stage with Colton, I’ve known him since I was 4 [and] we’ve been best friends for a long time now. What a way to recap it all, it was amazing and thank you to everyone that came it was incredible.” Chmelar said up until his junior year he thought he’d play soccer at the next level but after a breakout season on the gridiron he got some looks in football. As a junior, the 6-foot-1.5, 192-pounder was a perfect 51 for 51 on extra points and was 6 of 8 on field goals with a long of 51 yards. He also punted 38 times for an average of 35 yards with 12 punts inside the 20. Chmelar also played H-back for the Tigers and caught 27 passes for 425 yards and six touchdowns. Once his junior season was over, he got noticed by some schools, attended some camps and did well at those to earn an offer from the Aggies on June 19. He then committed on June 22 and hasn’t wavered since. “The coaching staff [at A&M] is incredible, and I’m blessed and honored to be coached by them and to get better and just learn what it’s like to play Division I football," Chmelar said. "I need that type of coaching staff. And I mean obviously the facilities and all the things you can get going to A&M that’s awesome, but the community, growing up here, knowing a lot of people that go to A&M [or] want to go to A&M, all the boxes just checked and I was like this is where I want to go, this is what I want to do.” Chmelar missed most of his senior season with a grade 2 severe strain in his quad but was able to return for the final five games of the season. During that time, he was 15 of 16 on extra points with the lone miss being blocked, something that his head coach Brandon Schmidt joked about during Colton’s signing. “It was my offensive line’s fault, so Colton I’ll take responsibility for it,” Schmidt said. He connected on his lone field goal try which was a 34-yarder in the team’s 35-17 loss to La Porte last week. Chmelar also had six punts for an average of 36 yards. He caught 15 passes for 304 yards with six touchdowns. He’ll finish the school year, including playing for the Tigers alongside Versari in soccer, and then join the Aggies in the summer. Chmelar was one of three local football players that signed on Wednesday along with College Station tight end Xavier Vela and Rudder athlete Jaquise Martin. Vela signed with Davidson, while Martin signed with Houston to play wide receiver. Both will have signing ceremonies later as Vela will be honored at 4 p.m. on Friday at College Station’s field house. Martin will take part in Rudder’s signing ceremony at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 11 at The Armory. “[Jaquise’s] a guy that you know can do it all,” Houston head coach Willie Fritz said during his early signing day presser. “He runs every route effectively and will block out of the perimeter. And we’re just very, very excited to have him."

I have met many wonderful people but have a problem getting close with anyone. Any suggestions? — Feeling Isolated Dear Isolated: I know it doesn’t feel like it, but you’re not alone. Many adults struggle to make the deep connections they want, especially later in life or in new communities. I turned to my friend and friendship expert Anna Goldfarb, author of “Modern Friendship: How to Nurture Our Most Valued Connections.” Here’s what she advises: “One of the best strategies for deepening a friendship is to provide what researchers call social identity support, which is seeing your friends for all the roles they play in their life: their race, class, gender and religion. This could look like asking to try their favorite dishes they grew up eating, including them in your cultural traditions and signaling that you’d like to be a part of theirs, too. “Another strategy is to recruit an accountability buddy. Identify a meaningful goal you both want to achieve — moving your body more, learning how to knit, watching every Matt Damon movie in chronological order — whatever floats your boat. Your friendship will deepen as you cheer on one another because you’re more invested in your successes.” Goldfarb told me, and I agree, that you’re off to a great start. So, you should congratulate yourself on making the effort and for continuing to try. It’s not always easy or as straightforward as we’d like, but you’re on the right path. Dear Eric: I enjoy your column and would like to make a comment regarding the letter from “Game Off” regarding her frustrations with her 10-year-old grandnephew who plays video games while on family vacation. I agree family time is important, and, in her own home, she should negotiate something with her niece so she can spend time with her grandnephew during visits. However, she’s completely out of touch regarding gaming. Many colleges now have competitive gaming teams supported by computing and graphic design faculty and they operate out of the athletics department just like other teams — it’s called “esports” and is becoming a big business. Her grandnephew may be headed to a successful career down the road through gaming. — Game Time Dear Game Time: You’re right, it’s all about balance. The letter writer can and should communicate her needs and wants regarding family visits. But she should also remain open to parenting choices that may not be what she would do in a similar circumstance. Additionally, while moderation is important when making decisions about gaming, you’re correct that it’s a growing and sometimes lucrative field of study and competition. The first esports college scholarship was given out in 2014 and there are currently more than 250 varsity-level esports programs across the United States and Canada, per the National Association of Collegiate Esports.Morgan State hopes for end to recent skid with visit to Minnesota

Noah Waterman's driving, twisting shot in the lane with 1.2 seconds left rescued Louisville from a home upset bid by Eastern Kentucky, escaping with a 78-76 home victory on Saturday. The Cardinals (8-5) equaled their win total from the 2023-24 campaign. Louisville claimed a 71-61 edge on a James Scott dunk with 6:17 remaining, but Eastern Kentucky (6-7) followed with a 12-1 run to claim the lead on Devontae Blanton's layup with 2:20 to play. The teams traded baskets until Waterman's shot in the final seconds provided the difference. Terrance Edwards Jr. made one of two free throws to pad the Cardinals' margin with 0.4 seconds to play. Louisville grabbed a season-high 21 offensive rebounds in the win. The Cardinals were led by Edwards' 20-point performance on 6-for-12 shooting. J'Vonne Hadley dropped in 15 points and added 10 rebounds, four on the offensive end. Chucky Hepburn added 14 points despite six turnovers and guard Reyne Smith had 12 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Waterman contributed 12 points, none more significant than the game winner. Eastern Kentucky's George Kimble III keyed the Colonels' rally with 24 points, with 17 coming in the second half. Blanton scored 22 points on 10-for-23 shooting. Guard Jackson Holt added 15 points, shooting 3-for-5 from 3-point range. The game was a back-and-forth battle throughout. Louisville stretched a first-half lead to as many as 15 points, in part by canning nine 3-point shots in the first 20 minutes, as opposed to just two in the second half. The Cardinals led 46-37 at halftime and stretched their lead back to 13 before a 12-2 led by 3-pointers from Holt and Mayar Wol pulled the Colonels back into the game midway through the second half. While Linda McMahon, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for education secretary, is meeting with senators who will determine whether she'll be confirmed for that role, her lack of experience in schools is being debated. The former World Wrestling Entertainment co-founder and president could earn a second stint in a Trump Cabinet if confirmed to run the Department of Education next year. While McMahon has experience running a large government organization -- she led the Small Business Administration from 2017 to 2019 in Trump's first term -- she has not worked in education outside of stints on the board of trustees at Sacred Heart University and serving on the Connecticut state Board of Education more than a decade ago. According to Trump's Agenda47 policy platform, Trump's top education priorities include eliminating the agency that McMahon would lead and topics that she has championed, like expanding school voucher programs and restoring power to parents in schools. McMahon allies suggest the businesswoman and Trump loyalist will disrupt and reshape the federal agency that's been led by Washington bureaucrats for more than four decades. MORE: Tracking Trump's picks to serve in his Cabinet, administration McMahon met Tuesday with Oklahoma Republican Markwayne Mullin, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, who predicted Wednesday, "I think she's going to get through pretty easy." Asked if he had talked about dismantling the Education Department, Mullin said that he wouldn't discuss the details of their meeting. On the House side, GOP Rep. Virginia Foxx, chairwoman of the Education and the Workforce Committee, called McMahon a fighter who will work tirelessly for students. And Foxx's colleague on the committee, Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., celebrated McMahon's atypical history. "We've all been educated and some of us know more than these egghead educators," Walberg said. "Certainly [the] bureaucrats who aren't even willing to come into the office now. I don't hold any trust in them." After being nominated, McMahon defended her record in a post on X . "I've witnessed the transformative power of education, both in the classroom and also in apprenticeship programs," McMahon wrote, adding, "All students should be equipped with the necessary skills to prepare them for a successful future." MORE: Linda McMahon's background as Trump's pick for education secretary Trump's nominees this cycle have stirred controversy, including defense secretary nominee and former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, Health and Human Services nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who removed himself from consideration for attorney general after just eight days due to being a distraction to the Trump/Vance transition. The president-elect's pick to run the Department of Education in his first term, billionaire Betsy DeVos, had no qualifications in the education field. It took then-Vice President Mike Pence's tie-breaking vote to confirm her in 2017. Tiffany Justice, co-founder of the conservative parental rights organization Moms for Liberty, argued the president-elect doesn't need an educator to lead the department so long as parents' rights are on the agenda. "I think he [Trump] needs to have someone who's unapologetically America-first and who's going to put the power back to people and when it comes to the education of children, that's parents," Justice told ABC News, adding, "I think leading with parental rights is probably the most important thing that he can do." Walberg told ABC News he believes McMahon will be a tough secretary who will carry out Trump's goal of closing the department. Democratic lawmakers on the House education committee were less thrilled with the selection but not completely opposed to McMahon. "It seems that there were others that probably could have added more from the perspective of background in education, but we'll see," ranking member Bobby Scott, D-Va., said. Scott commended McMahon's support for the Bipartisan Workforce Pell Act , which is a bill he co-sponsored that uses short-term Pell grants to align education opportunities with workforce needs. He also acknowledged that teaching in the classroom is not a requirement for holding the top education office. MORE: Trump's Cabinet picks boast thin resumes. That's the point: ANALYSIS "Someone good in education policy doesn't necessarily have to be someone who was a teacher, but, you know, somebody who's got some ideas on policy and how to improve access to college, improve academic achievement, how to eliminate the achievement gap, graduation rates -- I mean the kind of things that we're trying to achieve," Scott said. Education experts suggest shuttering the department could gut public education funding and disproportionately impact high-need students across the country. Reps. Scott and Jahana Hayes, D-Conn., are both opponents of Trump's longstanding pledge to dismantle the department. Hayes, the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, taught in Connecticut when McMahon was on the board of education. Hayes said she is squarely focused on defending public schools. "I'll just wait for the nomination process," Hayes told ABC News, adding "I believe deeply in public education and I'll always advocate not only for students but for the profession, and I think we need people that care as deeply about that as I do." But allegations against McMahon and her husband Vince McMahon have clouded the nomination. A recent lawsuit alleges the couple concealed years of sexual abuse of minors who worked as the WWE's ringside crew. Under Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education programs, McMahon and the department would be responsible for investigating sexual misconduct complaints in schools. Linda McMahon's attorney Laura Brevetti said the alleged scandal was investigated by the FBI, which found no grounds to continue the investigation at the time, and called the recent lawsuit "baseless." Meanwhile, Wil Del Pilar, senior vice president of the advocacy group The Education Trust, labeled the McMahon pick as a "slap in the face" particularly to conservative educators who are more deserving of the job. "It is an affront to U.S. education," Pilar said. "You're appointing someone, or potentially appointing someone, whose greatest experience was helping co-found the WWE."Newsom’s Memoir to Be Published in MayApple Files to Represent Itself in Google Antitrust Remedy Proceedings
Quarterback Drew Lock will start for the New York Giants on Sunday against the visiting Indianapolis Colts, coach Brian Daboll confirmed Tuesday. Lock's availability was uncertain after he injured his right shoulder during last weekend's 34-7 setback against the Atlanta Falcons. Lock, 28, underwent an MRI on Monday and the tests showed no damage, Daboll said. In six games (three starts) this season, Lock has an 0-3 record and has completed 52.7 percent of his passes for 624 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. The Giants (2-13) take a 10-game losing streak -- the longest in franchise history -- into the meeting with the Colts (7-8). --Field Level MediaVeteran farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, whose hunger strike entered its 29th day on Tuesday, urged all farm unions to ‘fight unitedly to win this battle.’ Addressing the protesters, the 67-year-old said: “I want to tell all of you that I am alright. We have to win this battle. This battle will be won only if the whole country fights unitedly. Dallewal also appealed to Punjab’s ‘younger brother Haryana’ and other states to join the battle. “I want that the government should not be able to evict us from here at any cost. If it is not able to do so, then either we will win or die, one of two things will happen,” he said in his speech. Meanwhile, a team of specialists, including a cardiologist, neurosurgeon and urologist from Government Rajindra Hospital, conducted a medical examination on Dallewal here on Tuesday. The team examined the veteran farm leader and collected blood and urine samples. One of the doctors, pleading anonymity, said that the sample will be tested in the hospital lab and the results will be shared tomorrow. Dallewal also made an appeal to all the farmers to stay alert in case the police tried to evict them from the site. Farmers, under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been camping at the Shambhu and the Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces. A “jatha (group)” of 101 farmers attempted to march to Delhi on foot three times between December 6 and 14 but were stopped by security personnel in Haryana.

The Tennessee Titans will turn to Mason Rudolph as their starter at quarterback for a second consecutive week, despite a three-interception performance in a loss Sunday to the Indianapolis Colts. Titans head coach Brian Callahan announced the decision Tuesday after calling his starting quarterback situation a week-to-week proposition moving forward for his 3-12 team. Rudolph, who was inserted as starter Sunday in place of a struggling Will Levis, was 23-of-34 passing for 252 yards and two touchdowns, but the turnovers proved costly in a 38-30 loss at Indianapolis. Rudolph, who made three starts for an injured Levis earlier this season, has completed 63.8 percent of his passes this season in 188 attempts for 1,267 yards, eight TDs and eight interceptions. Callahan yanked Levis in the third quarter of a 37-27 loss to the visiting Cincinnati Bengals in Week 15. Levis threw for just 89 yards and three interceptions, including a pick returned for a touchdown. He also lost a fumble. Rudolph came on to complete 21 of 26 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns -- one on the final play of the game -- and an interception. Levis has thrown for 1,916 yards with 12 TDs and 12 INTs this season. He is 5-15 as a starter in his first two seasons in the NFL after he was a second-round draft pick in 2023 out of Kentucky. --Field Level Media
