After being offered by Texas A&M in June, A&M Consolidated kicker Colton Chmelar immediately knew that’s where he wanted to spend the next four years. Chmelar made it official by putting pen to paper as he signed with the hometown Aggies as a preferred walk-on Wednesday afternoon as part of early signing day inside Consol’s Auditorium. “It was a dream for a long time to play Division I football and especially at Texas A&M,” Chmelar said. “For the longest time I thought I was going to play soccer until I learned I could kick a football, and so I kind of worked hard and tried to work on my craft and get better every day, so then I found out I was going to get an opportunity to play at Texas A&M [and] I was like. 'how am I going to pass that up.'” Fittingly, the two-sport athlete got to sign alongside soccer teammate and best friend Ross Versari as they were the only two athletes to take part in a signing day ceremony locally on Wednesday. “Man, it felt amazing,” Versari said. “Long time coming, been dreaming about this for forever you know. And so, it’s a dream come true for me.” Versari, Consol’s goalkeeper, signed with Division II University of Texas at Dallas back in late November but was also celebrated on Wednesday. “It was incredible,” Versari said. “One of the best feelings of my life seeing the auditorium completely filled up. And I mean it was a great feeling to be able to share the stage with Colton, I’ve known him since I was 4 [and] we’ve been best friends for a long time now. What a way to recap it all, it was amazing and thank you to everyone that came it was incredible.” Chmelar said up until his junior year he thought he’d play soccer at the next level but after a breakout season on the gridiron he got some looks in football. As a junior, the 6-foot-1.5, 192-pounder was a perfect 51 for 51 on extra points and was 6 of 8 on field goals with a long of 51 yards. He also punted 38 times for an average of 35 yards with 12 punts inside the 20. Chmelar also played H-back for the Tigers and caught 27 passes for 425 yards and six touchdowns. Once his junior season was over, he got noticed by some schools, attended some camps and did well at those to earn an offer from the Aggies on June 19. He then committed on June 22 and hasn’t wavered since. “The coaching staff [at A&M] is incredible, and I’m blessed and honored to be coached by them and to get better and just learn what it’s like to play Division I football," Chmelar said. "I need that type of coaching staff. And I mean obviously the facilities and all the things you can get going to A&M that’s awesome, but the community, growing up here, knowing a lot of people that go to A&M [or] want to go to A&M, all the boxes just checked and I was like this is where I want to go, this is what I want to do.” Chmelar missed most of his senior season with a grade 2 severe strain in his quad but was able to return for the final five games of the season. During that time, he was 15 of 16 on extra points with the lone miss being blocked, something that his head coach Brandon Schmidt joked about during Colton’s signing. “It was my offensive line’s fault, so Colton I’ll take responsibility for it,” Schmidt said. He connected on his lone field goal try which was a 34-yarder in the team’s 35-17 loss to La Porte last week. Chmelar also had six punts for an average of 36 yards. He caught 15 passes for 304 yards with six touchdowns. He’ll finish the school year, including playing for the Tigers alongside Versari in soccer, and then join the Aggies in the summer. The Tennessee Titans will turn to Mason Rudolph as their starter at quarterback for a second consecutive week, despite a three-interception performance in a loss Sunday to the Indianapolis Colts. Titans head coach Brian Callahan announced the decision Tuesday after calling his starting quarterback situation a week-to-week proposition moving forward for his 3-12 team. Rudolph, who was inserted as starter Sunday in place of a struggling Will Levis, was 23-of-34 passing for 252 yards and two touchdowns, but the turnovers proved costly in a 38-30 loss at Indianapolis.
