Millions of people across the country are expected to shop in-store and online, looking for last-minute sales and deals. Many of them turned out through the weekend and on Monday at the outlet stores and other shops in Vacaville. The National Retail Federation estimates that 157.2 million people planned to shop the last weekend before Christmas, up from $141.9 million just last year. The Federation also says because Thanksgiving was held during the last week of November, people had less time to shop making these final days before Christmas a critical time for final shopping tasks. That was the case for the Favre family from Novato, who were happily scooping up bargains at the Reebok outlet store Monday. “We wanted a time when we could all go shopping together,” explained Michelle Farve. “And we figured there wouldn’t be as many shoppers on a weekday as there was on the weekend.” Husband Gary Favre agreed. “It was tough getting off work before now,” he said, insisting they hadn’t procrastinated. “Besides, it’s better this way,” said daughter Lauren Favre, a student at College of Marin who is now home on holiday break. “This way, I can go out with them and point out what I want!” According to the Federation, 69.5 million people say they plan to shop in-store and online. But no matter where or how people shop, they’re hoping to find a good deal. There were plenty of deals, said Dixon resident Lorena Maya, who made a quick trip to the outlets to help her sons Adriel and Itzae purchase a gift for their dad. “They wanted to give him something instead of just a gift card,” she explained. A recent federation survey also showed that clothing or accessories and toys were the most purchased items so far this holiday shopping season. That was the case of Dana Rodriguez of Sacramento who turned out to find last minute items at the outlets. “I’m mostly done with my shopping this year but I can’t resist a bargain,” she said with a laugh. “I’m mostly looking for stocking stuffers now.” Earlier this month, U.S. Census Bureau stats saw overall retail sales climbing with November numbers up 0.7% seasonally adjusted month over month and up 3.8% unadjusted year over year. That compared with increases of 0.5% month over month and 2.9% year over year in October. November’s core retail sales as defined by NRF — based on the Census data but excluding automobile dealers, gasoline stations and restaurants — were up 0.4% seasonally adjusted month over month and up 3.8% unadjusted year over year.Engineering management edu at Lucknow varsity for Education 5.0
When measuring the impact of creatives, marketers typically rely on circumstantial evidence. Brand awareness and sales trends are important and provide useful KPI numbers, but they reflect the entire campaign. They don’t tell you what part of the creative is connecting with people. Is it the copy, the images, the audio? And while A/B testing can shed some light, it doesn’t get to a granular level. It doesn’t tell you if some parts are more effective than others. This explains why only 36% of marketers in a recent survey said they are ‘very confident’ in their ability to track creative performance effectively. The survey, from Plus Company, gathered information from 350 senior marketing professionals at B2B and B2C organizations in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Germany with more than 1,500 employees. Sixty-eight percent said difficulties in assessing creatives lead to inefficient resource allocation, and 44% said they missed opportunities for growth because of it. Fortunately, there is now a tool that is seemingly designed for measuring creative impact: artificial intelligence. “AI is good at breaking something into its component parts,” said Michael Cohen, chief data & analytics officer for Plus Company and the study’s co-author. “In the classic image recognition problem, it’s fundamentally breaking it down to be able to answer the question.” Multiple data sources The ability to do that makes it possible to tag aspects of the creatives. The AI can then find the common elements in the highest-performing campaigns. That information can be used in campaign iterations. The data can be enriched with information about individual reactions to the creative that lead to successful interactions. “You have the knowledge about who is seeing a particular creative in a particular configuration and who is not,” said Cohen. “So you learn how effective that creative was in a particular communication moment for a particular individual.” This would be a huge step up from how marketers are currently gathering information to improve their campaigns. Three-quarters of those in the Plus Company survey say that still rely on methods like lift studies, media mix and attribution modeling, and incrementality testings. These time and labor-intensive approaches mean missed opportunities and reduced competitiveness in an increasingly fast-paced market. This gap in real-time access can seriously impact a brand’s ability to stay relevant. Something marketers are keenly aware of: 58% of those surveyed cited a lack of real-time data and insights as hindering their ability to adapt creative strategies on the fly. A new power of connection “It comes down to AI unlocking this new power of connection that has been a really broken part of our category for a pretty long time,” said Crystalyn Stuart-Loayza, the study’s other co-author and chief digital officer for two of Plus Company’s agencies. “Historically, experiments have been done in silos as opposed to really integrated, fulsome motions that let us test and experiment with all facets of a program and have real-time learnings.” Marketers seeking to use AI to measure creative impact are going to face non-technological hurdles. Even though 88% of marketers say AI is valuable for generating responsive content, only 52% have fully integrated it into workflows. A common barrier? Resistance to change, 45% of marketers say is a significant problem, a figure that rises to 71% in smaller companies. This reluctance to adopt new technologies combines with less interest in AI at higher levels of organizations. Mid-level marketing professionals are the most enthusiastic about AI, with 57% calling it“very helpful.” However, at the VP level, that enthusiasm drops to 49%, largely due to very reasonable concerns about costs. El Salvador Congress votes to end ban on metal miningPHILADELPHIA — Jason Kelce will try his hand at late-night television early next year. Kelce announced during an appearance on ABC's “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Thursday night that he will host “They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce,” on ESPN. The one-hour show will tape on five straight Friday nights beginning Jan. 3. That coincides with the last week of the NFL's regular season and the playoffs. The show will originate in front of a live audience from Union Transfer in Philadelphia. The first four episodes will air at 1 a.m. EST starting on Jan. 4 with the final episode coming on at 1:30 a.m. EST on Feb. 1. “I loved late-night shows, I’ve always loved them. I remember sleepovers watching Conan O’Brien with my friends,” Kelce said on Kimmel's show. “We’re going to have a bunch of guys up there — legends of the game, friends that I played with, coaches, celebrities,” Kelce said. The Philadelphia-based band Snacktime will provide the show's music. The show's title is a homage to “They Call it Pro Football,” which was NFL Films’ first full-length film in 1967. NFL Films originated in Philadelphia and founders Ed and Steve Sabol are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It also featured the legendary voice of John Facenda, who did the news on Philadelphia television before becoming better known as the voice of NFL Films. NFL Films will produce the show in conjunction with Kelce’s Wooderboy Productions and Skydance Sports. Each episode will also be also seen on Replays airing on ESPN2, and also be available on ESPN+, ESPN's YouTube channel and the Jason Kelce channel on YouTube. Kelce is in the first year of a multi-year agreement with ESPN. He appears on the network's “Monday Night Countdown” show as well as providing halftime and postgame analysis. He played 13 years for the Philadelphia Eagles before retiring at the end of last season and was the most sought-after former player by networks. He participated in last year’s NFL Broadcasting and Media Workshop , which used to be known as the “Broadcast Bootcamp.” Kelce has made news lately, though, for other reasons. He was involved in a confrontation with a fan in State College, Pennsylvania, before the Penn State-Ohio State game on Nov. 2, when a fan heckled Kelce and appeared to shout an anti-gay slur about his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, for dating pop star Taylor Swift. Video showed Kelce grabbing the fan’s phone and throwing it to the ground. Kelce apologized about the incident on ESPN on Nov. 4. On Thursday night an autograph seeker verbally confronted Kelce outside the El Capitan Entertainment Center in Hollywood, where “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is taped. Video obtained by TMZ shows Kelce explaining that he doesn’t sign autographs for people that follow where he is going. After being shouted at for over two minutes, Kelce eventually got out of the car and signed autographs, including shaking the hand of a man who was berating Kelce with obscenities. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

Iowa cornerback Jermari Harris has opted out of the remainder of the 2024 season in order to prepare for the NFL draft, according to a report by 247Sports.com . The 6-foot-1 sixth-year senior from Chicago has recorded 27 tackles, three interceptions and a team-high seven pass breakups in 10 games for the Hawkeyes this season. That includes a pick-6 in a 38-21 win over Troy earlier this season. Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) plays at Maryland on Saturday before closing out its regular season at home against Nebraska on Nov. 29. The Hawkeyes are already bowl eligible, so Harris is likely opting out of three games in total. After missing the entire 2022 season due to an ankle injury, Harris was suspended for two games of the following season for his involvement in the gambling investigation into Iowa athletics. He later emerged as the Hawkeyes' top cornerback, earning the team's comeback player of the year award after compiling 42 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups. Harris will finish his college career with 105 tackles and eight interceptions. --Field Level Media
JUSTIN Baldoni has retained the celebrated lawyer who is representing the Mendenez brothers' family in his legal fight with his It Ends With Us co-star, Blake Lively. The U.S. Sun can confirm attorney Bryan Freedman has his hands full as he's dealing with two high-profile cases in Los Angeles . He's found himself in the spotlight in recent months as Eric and Lyle Menendez fight for their freedom after decades behind bars for murdering their parents, Kitty and Jose . Despite the horrific crime, they are being supported by the majority of their parent's family members, who have spoken out at press conferences and are campaigning for the brothers to be released. Erik and Lyle have long accused their late father of sexual abuse and accused their mother of turning a blind eye. They have garnered a lot of support as new evidence has emerged about their alleged childhood abuse. Blake Lively Freedman has been present at the hearings and press conferences in recent months as he works with the victim's families. Ahead of the next court date in January, the lawyer will also be focused on Baldoni's case. Lively is suing for sexual harassment, claiming that Baldoni's actions caused "severe emotional distress" and he went on to launch a smear campaign to "destroy" her reputation. The 37-year-old actress claims Baldoni, 40, showed her naked videos and images of other women and talked about his alleged previous porn addiction, according to court docs seen by The U.S. Sun. Most read in Celebrity 'DESPERATE ATTEMPT' Freedman released a statement on Baldoni's behalf after the lawsuit was revealed by The New York Times. "These claims are completely false, outrageous, and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media," he said. "It is shameful that Ms. Lively and her representatives would make such serious and categorically false accusations against Mr Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios and its representatives, as yet another desperate attempt to ‘fix’ her negative reputation which was garnered from her own remarks and actions during the campaign for the film; interviews and press activities that were observed publicly, in real time and unedited, which allowed for the internet to generate their own views and opinions." The undated legal complaint was filed with the California Civil Rights Department and the case is likely to drag on for months. The U.S. Sun understands once the CRD has issued a right-to-sue notice, they will not investigate the complaint. A spokesperson for the CRD told The U.S. Sun on Monday, "Our department is not currently involved as a party to an active lawsuit in court with respect to the matter you referenced. "However, that is not an indication as to whether or not a civil rights complaint has been filed with us. "Generally speaking, there are two avenues for workplace discrimination complaints filed with our department: 1. A worker can file a complaint with our department for us to independently investigate the facts and legal issues. 2. A worker can request an immediate right-to-sue in order to potentially file their own lawsuit in court without the involvement of our department." LEGAL BATTLE They added, "For the latter, the right-to-sue notice is issued immediately, and our department is no longer involved and generally does not conduct an investigation." Baldoni's attorney featured in a profile piece in the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, with the headline, " The Street-Fighting Lawyer Who’s Become Hollywood's Dark Knight ." ESPN broadcaster Sage Steel, who hired Freedman after she was suspended from her job, praised the attorney at the time. She told the outlet, "He's the kind of person you need if you're David fighting Goliath." The publication also claimed his "relentless go-for-the-jugular MO — in the press, via depositions, through court filings, during private dispute resolution — is, to his mind, rooted in hyper-competitiveness." His client list is impressive and varied having represented everyone from Kevin Spacey to FKA Twigs. Rumors about Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni not seeing eye-to-eye began earlier this year during the promotional tour for their movie, It Ends With Us. The film had a budget of around $25 million and was a box office hit, grossing a worldwide total of $351 million. But despite its success, Lively and Baldoni were hardly seen together during the promo tour. Internet sleuths noticed the pair didn't follow each other on social media, and many of the cast only followed Lively. TMZ then alleged that they fell out over "fat-shaming", and Baldoni supposedly kissing for too long during scenes. Baldoni hired a crisis management firm before reports began to emerge of Lively not being nice to interviewers and she was slammed for 'tone-deaf' comments about the movie. The film was released on Netflix days before Lively filed her lawsuit, which includes texts between Baldoni's publicist and a crisis management expert. Lively's team claims they were obtained through a subpoena, and one alleges Baldoni wanted the actress's career to "be buried." Meanwhile, Lively has four lawyers listed for her from two different legal teams, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, and Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP. The actress has accused Baldoni of repeatedly crossing the line both during filming and when the cameras stopped rolling. Legal documents allege there was a meeting attended by Lively, her actor husband Ryan Reynolds, 48 , Baldoni, bosses of Wayfarer Studios, and lawyers, to address her complaints on set. Among her alleged demands were that Baldoni's previous "pornography addiction" and her lack of porn "consumption" should no longer be up for discussion. She also allegedly demanded they should not talk about their sex lives, "genitalia" or "personal times that physical consent was not given in sexual acts, as either the abuser or the abused." Lively also stated that she would not take part in sex scenes outside those agreed when she signed up for the movie, per the lawsuit. The film is based on Colleen Hoover’s novel about Lily and her abusive boyfriend Ryle, played by Lively and Baldoni. According to the lawsuit, she said touching or sexual comments from Baldoni and lead producer Jamey Heath "would not be tolerated" and that there should be "no more improvised kissing", "biting or sucking of lip" without consent. Read More on The US Sun She also allegedly banned Baldoni, who also directed the movie, from bringing his friends on set during sex scenes and said there needed to be a full-time intimacy coordinator. In a statement to the New York Times, Lively said, "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted."

Brainy, 'normal guy': the suspect in US insurance CEO's slayingCHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bears hoped the first in-season head coaching change in the founding NFL franchise’s history would be the parachute a free-falling team needed. Turns out, the issues go beyond that. A listless showing in a 38-13 loss at San Francisco on Sunday stretched their losing streak to seven — and counting — in their first game since Thomas Brown replaced the fired Matt Eberflus on an interim basis . “I believe in the people," Brown said Monday. "I think it’s all about the guys we have in the locker room, the coaches that we have. I understand our mentality and our approach going forward. As I said at the beginning, we don’t have cowards in the locker room. We don’t have cowards in our coaching staff. Regardless of circumstance we will come to battle every single day.” The Bears (4-9) sure didn't show much fight Sunday in a loss that was as embarrassing as any. It ensured they will finish with a non-winning record for the 12th time in 14 seasons. They were outgained 319-4 in the first half for the ninth-largest discrepancy since 1991 and trailed 24-0 at the break. They managed one first down while punting on their first five possessions. Chicago set a season high for points allowed and matched its second-worst total by giving up 452 yards. It all added up to the Bears' most lopsided loss since a 41-10 blowout at Kansas City in Week 3 last season. It obviously wasn't what they envisioned when they decided to buck their own history and fire Eberflus on Nov. 29. The tipping point came at Detroit on Thanksgiving , when Chicago ran out of time for a potential tying field goal despite having one timeout remaining, just the latest in a string of bad late-game decisions. Beyond that, there are clearly issues with the roster. Though team president Kevin Warren said last week that Ryan Poles will remain the general manager and lead the search for a new coach , it's fair to wonder if a few more losses like this would change those plans. The last-place Bears' next two games are against the top two teams in the NFC North, with a Monday night game at Minnesota (11-2) followed by a home game against division-leading Detroit (12-1). Chicago then hosts NFC West leader Seattle (8-5) before the season finale at Green Bay (9-4). What’s working It's hard to say anything worked when the Bears were so thoroughly dominated. What needs help Offensive line. The Bears were once again dominated in the trenches and allowed rookie Caleb Williams to get sacked seven times, bringing his league-leading total to 56. It's the most for a Chicago quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Yes, Williams hangs onto the ball too long at times. But too often, the blockers aren't giving him enough time. They're not creating holes for the running backs, either. Things were particularly bad against San Francisco. And that was against a defense missing the injured Nick Bosa. Stock up LB T.J. Edwards. The veteran recorded Chicago's lone sack and his second of the season to go with two tackles for loss. He led the team with 10 tackles. Stock down Williams. The No. 1 overall draft pick completed 17 of 34 passes for 134 yards with two late touchdowns to Rome Odunze. Though he played his seventh straight game without an interception, he lost a fumble. In the first three games with Brown calling plays after former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was fired, Williams was 75 of 117 for 827 yards with five touchdowns, no interceptions and a rating of 99.2. Injuries Brown had no update on returner DeAndre Carter (hamstring) and RB Travis Homer (head) after they left Sunday's game. Key number 20 — The defense allowed nine plays of 20 yards or more, the most against Chicago in the past nine seasons. Next steps The Bears have a tough task trying to right themselves at Minnesota. The Vikings have won six straight, including an overtime victory at Soldier Field in Week 12, after Chicago scored 11 points in the final 22 seconds of regulation. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL
Both Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson will miss the start of 2025 for the Vancouver Canucks due to injury. It’s not the best way to ring in the new year with the team scrambling for a playoff spot. “Some guys are going to get some opportunities.” Head Coach Rick Tocchet provides some injury updates and speaks on the chances for players to step up. pic.twitter.com/MSpD2xK1Se — Vancouver Canucks (@Canucks) December 29, 2024 Hughes, Pettersson Out to Open 2025 Pettersson was injured in the team’s 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks , playing just under 15 minutes that game. His two goals were seen as a sign that his game was back on track after a shaky start. Despite Pettersson’s injured state, he’s still managed 10 goals and 28 points in 34 games this season. How long he’ll be gone is a mystery, described by coach Rick Tocchet as being “about a week away”. That’s been said before about Pettersson, who has a history of playing through injuries without revealing them. How long Vancouver’s second-leading scorer will be out will only be known in his return. Vancouver’s leading scorer and captain was also injured during the San Jose game and is out “week-to-week” according to Tocchet. Last year’s Norris Memorial Trophy winner has had an incredibly productive season so far, scoring eight goals and 42 points in just 34 games. Hughes had two assists and nearly 25 minutes of ice time in that San Jose game. What This Means Hughes and Pettersson closed 2025 on the sidelines, missing Vancouver’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Seattle Kraken . They will also miss New Year’s Eve in Calgary facing the Flames . Vancouver has just five wins in December and has tumbled into wild card territory. While Pettersson’s absence hurts the team up front, there is no replacing Hughes, especially in Filip Hronek ‘s continued absence. The cracks showed when the Canucks blew a three-goal lead with five minutes remaining last game. If there was an internal solution, they would have tried it. As it is, other teams in the league aren’t going to throw life preservers in possible trades. A trade for a top-pair defenceman is difficult at the best of times, and the smell of desperation won’t help. This might just be a case of riding it out over the next week to ten days, possibly even after their next road trip. Only two of their next eight games are against teams in their division, and those are happening next. It’s unlikely they will be able to trade for any substantial help before then. The most anticipated matchup of the weekend is set to take place on Jan. 1 between the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 1 Oregon Ducks in the iconic Rose Bowl Game, marking a rematch of their Week 7 showdown earlier this season. In that first meeting, Oregon emerged victorious 32-31 after a dramatic finish that many called the Game of the Year. Bethlehem plans somber Christmas under shadow of war BETHLEHEM, West Bank — The city of Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, the traditional birthplace of Jesus, will not have the usual trappings of the city's favorite holiday: no public Christmas tree, no raucous scouts march, no decorations and no twinkling lights, in deference to the ongoing war in Gaza. As Bethlehem prepares to mark its second Christmas under the shadow of the war, Manger Square is empty of tourists and many businesses aren’t sure how much longer they can hold on. The choir, which is made up of both adult and child choristers, will perform at services on Christmas Day under the 365-foot dome of the cathedral, designed by architect Christopher Wren after the 1666 Great Fire of London destroyed its medieval predecessor and much of the surrounding old city. The first two girls to become full choristers officially joined the choir in June. In the ruins of a bombed-out church, there's now a tiny Christmas tree DARDGHAYA, Lebanon — A Christmas tree stands among the fallen stones in the ruins of a Catholic church in southern Lebanon that was hit by an Israeli airstrike during the war with Hezbollah. It's a small and modest tree. There are no lights because the war destroyed power lines. The ground is too uneven to set up the Nativity scene. The priest says his blood pressure went up and he lost his balance when he saw the church's destruction. Now he leads Mass in an underground room that serves as a temporary worship space. He tells the community it “is more like the cave where Jesus was born.” It's time to celebrate holidays in Zimbabwe by unveiling a tombstone HARARE, Zimbabwe — Some of the most festive times of Zimbabwe's holiday season occur around the unveiling of tombstones for late relatives. The generations-old rite has come to be associated with long holidays such as Christmas in the southern African nation. The weakened economy leaves many people struggling to do their duty of honoring the dead. Zimbabweans traditionally use such holidays for the graveyard rites that include song, dance, Christian prayers or invitations for ancestral spirits to protect and guide the living. Many believe such ceremonies can bring blessings — but neglect them too long and a curse could result. Elaborate holiday light displays are making spirits bright in a big way CONCORD, N.H. — Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow might be enough to brighten some homes this holiday season. But others are adorned with thousands of blinking lights synched to blasting music. In Mesa, Arizona, 14 homeowners have been going all-out on holiday lights for 30 years, and those buying homes in the neighborhood often find the attics full of décor left behind by previous owners. In Santa Clarita, California, residents began coordinating their holiday lights to bring some joy to their community after an earthquake. And in Edmond, Oklahoma, those looking to the western sky will easily spot the Miranda family’s elaborate display featuring images and music from the movie “Wicked.” Santa braves heat of the Amazon to bring gifts to children in Brazil CATALAO, Brazil — Santa Claus has braved the sticky heat of the Amazon rainforest this weekend, taking two boats to bring gifts to the children of a small village near the Brazilian city of Manaus. The visit was arranged by Amigos do Papai Noel, a Brazilian charity that has been taking gifts to children in the Amazon rainforest for the past 26 years. More than 600 children from different villages gathered in Catalao to receive presents from Santa, who dressed in his traditional nightcap, white gloves and red suit, while enduring the stifling jungle heat.
